[Seizures during interferon alpha therapy: three cases in dermatology].

INTRODUCTION: Interferon alpha has many side effects. Among them the risk of occurrence of seizures is not well known by dermatologists. [Induced interstitial pneumonitis: role of pegylated interferon alpha 2b].

Pulmonary complications of alpha interferon are rare. We report two cases of lung complications in liver transplantation patients for HCV related cirrhosis. After switching from interferon alpha to pegylated interferon alpha 2b, one patient developed a BOOP (Bronchiolitis Obliterans Organizing Pneumonia) and the other severe interstitial pneumonitis. We discuss the causes of these rare pulmonary alpha-interferon induced complications and the different way to suggest that the pegylated interferon alpha 2b could be related to the risk of pulmonary toxicity of this treatment.

[Hypertriglyceridemia following treatment with interferon alpha in essential thrombocythemia].

A case of essential thrombocytemia treated with alpha interferon is reported, with hematological remission, but as a side effect hypertriglyceridemia is relevant. It was normalized when alpha interferon was stopped. This is the first case of essential thrombocythemia in Venezuela treated with biological modifiers, with hematological remission, but with hypertriglyceridemia as side effect.

Recombinant interferon alpha-2b as treatment of essential thrombocythaemia.

We report the disease characteristics and therapeutic results for 25 patients suffering from essential thrombocythaemia (ET), treated with recombinant interferon-alpha-2b (IFN-alpha 2b). ET was diagnosed according to the criteria of the Polycythaemia Vera Study Group. All patients were programmed to receive a subcutaneous induction treatment consisting of 3 MU of IFN-alpha 2b daily for 6 months. Intralesional interferon alpha-2b therapy for Buschke-Loewenstein tumour.

A patient with a Buschke-Loewenstein tumour associated with human papillomavirus type 6/11 is reported. He was intralesionally treated with human recombinant alpha-2b interferon (9 x 10(6) IU/day) three times weekly. The tumour completely disappeared within 5 months of continuous treatment which was well tolerated. Sixteen months after completion of therapy the patient remains well and free of disease.

Nine patients with leptomeningeal disease are reported who were treated with intraventricular alpha-interferon (alpha-IFN).
