BACKGROUND: Triple-reassortant (tr) viruses of human, avian, and swine origin, including H1N1, H1N2, and H3N2 subtypes, emerged in North American swine herds in 1998 and have become predominant. The Iowa Gambling Treatment Program (IGTP) amassed participant data for gamblers and concerned others of gamblers over 4 years (1997-2001). Data collection opportunities included: (1) crisis contacts, (2) placement screening, (3) admission, (4) treatment services, (5) discharge, and (6) follow-up. The Ponseti casting technique is reported to have a high success rate in the treatment of idiopathic clubfoot. BACKGROUND: Farmers have been previously reported to have higher rates of depression and suicide compared to other occupations. Comparisons of depressive symptoms and risk factors for states should increase understanding of depression in farmers.
METHODS: Representative samples of 385 Iowa and 470 Colorado male principal farm operators in the respective state Farm Family Health and Hazard Surveillance projects were evaluated for depressive symptoms by using the CES-D scale. Risk factors were determined by using weighted multiple logistic regression analyses.

Gravidity and parity have strong inverse relations with endometrial cancer occurrence. To determine whether gravidity masks an association with other reproductive factors, the authors analyzed data from a cohort study of 24,848 postmenopausal Iowa women aged 55-69 years who were cancer free at baseline in 1986 and who had not had a hysterectomy. Survey dental examinations were conducted in 262 dentate elderly people aged 70 and older and residing in two rural Iowa counties. Over 60 percent of the elderly in these countries were dentate. Buccal and mesial sites of all teeth were assessed for gingival recession, pocket depth, and attachment loss. A cross-sectional study of the non-institutionalized population of the State of Iowa was completed in 1980. Persons were interviewed by telephone and a follow-up dental examination was conducted in the home. PURPOSE: Perceived social status (PSS), a measure of social status, reflects cumulative lifetime effects of an individual's relative social status based on resources and lived experiences. PSS is hypothesized to better capture social status compared to traditional measures of socioeconomic status (SES) (i.e., education, occupation, and income).
