Facial injuries in major trauma patients in Ireland.

INTRODUCTION: Major trauma is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Facial injuries are often present in those sustaining major trauma. We sought to examine the Irish trauma registry to further assess this association. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the Irish trauma registry, the Major Trauma Audit, from 2017 to 2022 was performed. Patients over 16 years who had sustained major trauma were included in the analysis. The presence of an associated facial injury was further analysed. RESULTS: A total of 8943 patients were included in the analysis. A facial inju

The genetic landscape of polycystic kidney disease in Ireland.

Polycystic kidney diseases (PKDs) comprise the most common Mendelian forms of renal disease. It is characterised by the development of fluid-filled renal cysts, causing progressive loss of kidney function, culminating in the need for renal replacement therapy or kidney transplant. Ireland represents a valuable region for the genetic study of PKD, as family sizes are traditionally large and the population relatively homogenous. Studying a cohort of 169 patients, we describe the genetic landscape of PKD in Ireland for the first time, compare the clinical features of patients with and without a m…

Lithium in the Natural Waters of the South East of Ireland.

The South East of Ireland (County Carlow) contains a deposit of the valuable lithium-bearing mineral spodumene (LiAl(SiO₃)₂). This resource has recently attracted interest and abstractive mining in the area is a possibility for the future. The open cast mining of this resource could represent a potential hazard in the form of metalliferous pollution to local water. The population of County Carlow is just under 60,000. The local authority reports that approximately 75.7% of the population's publicly supplied drinking water is abstracted from surface water and 11.6% from groundwater. In total, 1…

Dental health and diet in early medieval Ireland.

OBJECTIVE: With the aim to get a better picture of dental health, diet and nutrition in early medieval Ireland a population-based study focusing on several attributes of oral health in adult individuals was conducted. The study focused on possible differences between sexes and age groups in terms of frequency and distribution of studied pathologies in order to determine whether these differences result from different diets, cultural practices or are age-related. DESIGN: Permanent dentitions belonging to adult individuals from five Irish early medieval sites were examined for the evidence of c…

Prevalence of antileptospiral serum antibodies in dogs in Ireland.

A total of 474 serum samples from client owned Irish dogs were tested for the presence of antibodies to serovars Canicola, Icterohaemorrhagiae, Bratislava, Autumnalis, Pomona, Altodouro, Grippotyphosa, Mozdok, Hardjobovis and Ballum. Six per cent of dogs presented to veterinary practitioners for problems unrelated to leptospirosis showed evidence of prior exposure to leptospiral serovars belonging to the serogropus Ballum, Australis, Pomona and Sejroe. One unvaccinated dog suspected to have leptospirosis showed seroconversion to serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae. Based on these results the authors

Conflict was associated with reduced donations to out-group schools and the return of out-group letters, but we found no evidence that it influences in-group cooperation. Rather, socio-economic status was the major determinant of cooperative behavi …

Biochemical toxicology and suicide in Ireland: a laboratory study.

Biochemical toxicology in suicides provides a template to improve preventive interventions in cases of suicide. The menu for biochemical toxicological analysis in coroners' cases is not prescriptive in Ireland or in the United Kingdom. The aim of the study was to confirm that reliance on the results of an immunoassay screen for drugs of abuse and common analgesics in order to select samples for compound confirmation by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry is likely to understate the potential role of drugs in suicide. Blood and urine samples were analyzed using enzyme immunoassay, alcohols by …

the management of vulval intraepithelial neoplasia in Northern Ireland.

In this study, we present the findings of a regional retrospective audit of all cases of vulval intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) diagnosed in Northern Ireland (NI) over an 11-year period (1989-1999). During the period of the study, there were 97 cases of VIN. Cases of VIN were treated by many different clinicians at 14 hospitals. The commonest symptom at presentation was pruritus vulvae. The most common histopathologic diagnosis was VIN III (73%). In 52% of the cases, there was multifocal VIN, and in 43%, there was involvement of other sites such as the cervix, vagina, or anal region. The most …

An aetiopathological study of chronic bronchopneumonia in lambs in Ireland.

Chronic bronchopneumonia in lambs, also known as 'atypical' or 'chronic, non-progressive' pneumonia is a common, frequently sub-clinical disease affecting animals under 12-months-old in intensive production systems. Infection with both Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae and Mannheimia haemolytica have been implicated in the aetiology of this condition and a variety of pulmonary lesions can result. In this study, detailed laboratory examination of 30 abattoir-derived lungs with the characteristic gross features of atypical pneumonia (AP) was carried out with a view to refining and correlating the histopa

BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations have been identified in 107 families in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Ninety-seven of these families had been referred to regional cancer genetics centres and a further 10 were identified from a sequential series of male breast cancers treated in Edinburgh. Fifty-nine of the families had a mutation in BRCA1 and 46 in BRCA2. Two families had both. Family trees were extended and cancer diagnoses verified by means of the unusually complete and accessible Scottish and Northern Irish records. Ten specific recurring mutations (five in each gene) accounted for almost half o…

A novel nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis in young greyhounds in Ireland.

Fourteen 4- to 18-month-old vaccinated Greyhounds (10 males, 4 females) from three kennels in southern Ireland presented over a 2-year period with acute or insidious onset neurological signs. Head tilting, ataxia, recumbency, circling, and blindness were commonly observed, and animals were dull, dehydrated, and had lost weight. Hematologic and biochemical parameters reflected dehydration but were otherwise unremarkable. Microscopic examination revealed severe diffuse and focal gliosis and gemistocytosis accompanied by mononuclear cell perivascular cuffing in caudate nucleus and cortical gray m…
