Certain chemical properties, which may determine the biological actions of the recently discovered histamine H2-receptor antagonists burimamide and metiamide, are identified, partly by considering the derivation of these antagonists. Examples are given of attempts to design antagonists using histamine as starting point. A partial agonist was eventually obtained through modifying the side chain of histamine but retaining the imidazole ring. Five forms of arginase, A1, A2, A3, A4, and A5, were found to be present in human tissues. The molecular weight of all these forms is the same, 120,000, but they differ in the behavior on DEAE- and CM-cellulose, electrophoretic mobility, isoelectric point, and immunochemical properties. Forms A1 from kidney and A5 from liver show complete immunological incompatibility, whereas forms A2 from liver, A3 from salivary gland, and A4 from kidney exhibit partial incompatibility with respect to each other and to forms A1 and A5.

Addition of normal rat serum to mouse or rat IgE antibody blocks the passive cutaneous sensitization of rats with either IgE. The inhibition can be obtained with isologous and autologous rat serum. The blocking factor was purified and characterized as a molecule with a MW of 69,000 daltons, a sedimentation rate of 4.5 s and an isoelectric point of pH 4.7. The factor blocks the PCA reaction also at previously sensitized skin sites and seems to act on the secretory phase of mediator release.

Torsades de pointes (TdP) is a less common type of ventricular tachycardia (VT) characterized by polymorphic VT of changing amplitude and characteristic twists around the isoelectric baseline. It is almost always associated with QT interval prolongation. Unless immediately intervened, it can lead to ventricular fibrillation followed by cardiac arrest. We report a case of a patient with bradycardia-induced TdP who presented to the emergency room with cardiac arrest.
