Decompression-first or direct enucleation: The choice of treatment for medium-sized odontogenic jaw cysts.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of medium-sized odontogenic jaw cysts is inconsistent at present. Two main treatments, namely decompression and enucleation, are used overlappingly. This retrospective analysis aims to provide useful references for technique selection for future management of medium-sized odontogenic jaw cysts. METHODS: Odontogenic cysts with lesion sizes ranging 2-4 cm were included. The clinical and radiological data of the patients were reviewed. Decompression-first and direct enucleation treatments were the two main surgical techniques. The preoperative parameters and postoperati…

Treatment effect analysis of curettage for jaw cysts based on volumetric assessment and image registration.

The study was conducted to develop a visual and intuitive quantitative evaluation method for maxillary cystic lesions after curettage. Mimics 16.0 and Geomagic Studio 2013 were used to form a precise reconstruction of the cystic lesion morphology of 60 cases; the average reduction rates and 95% confidence interval were calculated. Computed tomography (CT) registration was performed before and after surgery to observe morphology features of the bone regeneration of the cystic area. The average reduction rates (RR) of the cysts after curettage were (43.56 ± 16.79)%, (54.33 ± 17.15)% and (68.53 ±

[The preliminary results of research on salcatonin treatment in the surgical therapy of jaw cysts].

The results of research concerning a local and systemic treatment with salcatonin in surgical therapy of maxillary cysts are reported. A reduction in bone recovery time has been noted in the cases studied; this means a reduction in osteolytic area and a roentgenographic opacification of the same.

Atypical variant of Stafne bone defect mimicking odontogenic cyst of the jaw.

Stafne first described the term "Stafne bone defects" (SBDs) in 1942. These are unilateral, asymptomatic, well-defined radiolucent lingual bony defects located at the posterior region of the mandible below the inferior alveolar canal. It is most commonly seen in the posterior region, whereas it is relatively rare in the anterior region. This anterior variant of SBD is often misdiagnosed as any other odontogenic cyst, and hence advanced imaging techniques should be followed to identify it at the earliest. Due to the lower prevalence of this entity, only a handful of cases have been documented f

Residual cyst of the jaws: A clinico-pathologic study of this seemingly inconspicuous lesion.

OBJECTIVES: Residual cysts are relatively rare inflammatory cysts of the jaws. They are essentially radicular cysts without the presence of the offending dentition. These lesions have the ability to destroy bone within the jaws without any symptoms. Moreover, they can mimic more aggressive cysts and tumours on radiographs. The aim of this study was to describe the clinico-pathological features of residual cysts in order to discern them from other cystic lesions as well as analyse their management and recurrence patterns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-four histopathologically confirmed residual

Oral surgery II: Part 3. Cysts of the mouth and jaws and their management.

A cyst may be defined as a pathological (or abnormal) body cavity, usually lined by epithelium, which contains fluid (gas or liquid) or semi-solid substances other than (primarily) pus. Even this definition is contentious, as some pathologists prefer the term pseudocyst or cavity when there is no epithelial lining. However, the above definition, based on that of Kramer, is as inclusive as possible. Cysts of the mouth and jaws are fairly common and their management is an essential component of oral surgery. This third article in the series deals with the classification, diagnosis and management

Odontogenic cysts, odontogenic tumors, fibroosseous, and giant cell lesions of the jaws.

Odontogenic cysts that can be problematic because of recurrence and/or aggressive growth include odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), calcifying odontogenic cyst, and the recently described glandular odontogenic cyst. The OKC has significant growth capacity and recurrence potential and is occasionally indicative of the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. There is also an orthokeratinized variant, the orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst, which is less aggressive and is not syndrome associated. Ghost cell keratinization, which typifies the calcifying odontogenic cyst, can be seen in solid lesions that

Volumetric analysis of spontaneous bone healing after jaw cyst enucleation.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the degree of spontaneous bone healing after cyst enucleation as well as its contributing factors. Pre- and post-operative computed tomography (CT) scans of consecutive patients who had undergone jaw cyst enucleation were retrospectively analyzed. The outcome variable was healing ratio, which was calculated using the volume of the cyst before surgery and the volume of the defect in the bone after surgery. Predictor variables including duration of observation, pre-operative cyst size, age, gender, and involved jaw were analyzed to determine their influen

Continuous Surgical Decompression for Solitary Bone Cyst of the Jaw in a Teenage Patient.

BACKGROUND: A solitary bone cyst or simple bone cyst is a nonneoplastic osseous lesion, with no epithelial lining, also considered as a pseudocyst. These lesions, with an intact bony wall and fluid-filled, are frequently discovered by chance in radiological studies. The etiopathogenesis has not been studied in depth, and the management remains controversial. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a clinical case of a 15-year-old boy who underwent an orthopantomography to assess the development and position of the third molars during a routine postorthodontic check-up. By chance, the X-ray identified a

[Clinical application of cone beam CT in the treatment of jaw bone cyst].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the value of cone beam CT (CBCT) in the treatment of jaw bone cyst. METHODS: Twenty-five patients with jaw bone cyst were included, which were examined by CBCT as an addition of panoramic radiography. Through CBCT, the information about the three-dimensional location, the bone wall of cyst and the relationship between cyst, teeth and some other important anatomical structures were studied, surgical preparations and treatments followed accordingly. RESULTS: The CBCT images clearly demonstrated detailed information about the cyst, which was verified in the operation and

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the jaws. Review of the literature and report of 2 cases.

Strictly speaking, the aneurysmal bone cyst is not a true cyst. It is a lesion characterized by replacement of bone by fibro-osseous tissue containing blood-filled cavernous spaces. It is usually treated by surgical curettage, and access within the jaws may sometimes be difficult. We reviewed the world literature and found 63 cases of aneurysmal bone cysts involving the face, 22 reported in the maxilla, and 63 in the mandible. One was found in the zygomatic arch. Of the patients reported, 88% were younger than 30 years old; there was an equal sex distribution. Included in this report, are two

Critical assessment of the latest classification of jaw cysts proposed by the World Health Organization (2017).

BACKGROUND: The fourth edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Head and Neck Tumors was published in January 2017, and includes a classification of odontogenic tumors and odontogenic cysts. The present review assesses the changes made in this new classification in relation to odontogenic and non-odontogenic jaw cysts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An electronic search was conducted in the Cochrane Library, PubMed-MEDLINE and Scopus databases using the search terms: "odontogenic cyst" "WHO classification" "update". Studies written in English and published between January 2005 and Ap…
