Attractive targeted sugar baits for malaria control in western Kenya (ATSB-Kenya): enrolment characteristics of cohort children and households.

BACKGROUND: In western Kenya, a cluster-randomized trial is assessing the impact of attractive targeted sugar baits (ATSBs) on malaria in children enrolled in three consecutive cohorts. Here, characteristics of children and households at enrolment, and factors associated with baseline malaria prevalence are described. METHODS: Children aged 1 to < 15 years were randomly selected by cluster (n = 70) from a census database. Cohorts were enrolled in March-April 2022, September-October 2022, and March-April 2023. ATSBs were deployed in March 2022. At enrolment, all participants were tested for ma…

Individual and community level factors of malaria among under-five children in Kenya: Based on the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a significant global public health challenge. In Kenya, it is a leading cause of illness and death among children under five in malaria-endemic areas. Understanding its prevalence and the factors influencing it is essential for informed public health decisions and targeted interventions. OBJECTIVE: Assess prevalence and associated factors of malaria in under-five children using the 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey data. METHOD: A total of 3146 children were included in this study. A multilevel logistic regression model was fitted to assess factors associat…

Mitigating household psychosocial and economic impact of coronavirus pandemic in Mathare slums, Nairobi, Kenya: an initiative by the German doctors in Kenya.

The Psychosocial and Economic Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic in Mathare slums were adverse which necessitated mitigation strategies to be employed to cushion the most vulnerable and help them cope with the new 'state of affairs'. The pandemic was characterized by a surge in the respiratory infections, unemployment, households going hungry, gender-based violence in families, child abuse cases and increased rates of teenage pregnancy. Retrospective case study design was employed; secondary data from hospital departments were extracted for analysis from March 2020 to December 2021. Interventions in

Changes in attitudes toward the HPV vaccine in Kenya.

Globally, attitudes about vaccines and vaccination are changing rapidly, but few studies have examined within-person shifts over time. We use a longitudinal survey in Kenya to assess how respondents' attitudes about the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine changed between 2022 and 2024. In 2022, we conducted a random digit-dialed phone survey of 1405 Kenyan parents/caregivers of girls age-eligible for the HPV vaccine; respondents were re-contacted in 2024, and 1093 people (78%) were successfully re-surveyed. Each survey included identical questions about HPV vaccine and vaccination attitudes (ad…

Children in Kenya and the US are averse to epistemic injustice.

This preregistered study investigated children's response to testimonial injustice in peer-to-peer dyadic interactions across two cultural contexts-Nanyuki, Kenya, and Berkeley, USA (N = 192, ages 4-10, 50% female; 2023-2024). In an inequity condition, an adult listener repeatedly believed one child over another when they offered conflicting testimony. In a control condition, the listener disbelieved both children. Children in both societies evaluated the listener as fair in the control condition and unfair in the inequity condition regardless of whether they were believed or disbelieved. Ther…

Kawasaki disease in Kenya and review of the African literature.

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease has been described across the globe, although publications from Africa are limited. To our knowledge, there are no publications on Kawasaki disease from Kenya, which triggered this report. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was undertaken to identify in-patients with a discharge diagnosis of Kawasaki disease, over 2 different 5-year periods, at two pediatric hospitals in Nairobi, Kenya. We reviewed the medical records of all patients and report their clinical findings, diagnostic workup and treatment. In addition, we undertook a detailed review of the …

Referral Patterns of Burn Injury in Rural Kenya.

Burn injury represents a substantial burden of disease in resource-limited settings. Kenya has no formal trauma system and referral practices for burn injuries are not well understood. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors associated with burn injury referrals in rural Kenya. A retrospective chart review was conducted for patients with burn injury from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2017 at a 300-bed faith-based, teaching hospital in southwest Kenya. Bivariate analysis compared referred and non-referred patients. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the associ…

Modeling the spatial distribution of anthrax in southern Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Anthrax is an important zoonotic disease in Kenya associated with high animal and public health burden and widespread socio-economic impacts. The disease occurs in sporadic outbreaks that involve livestock, wildlife, and humans, but knowledge on factors that affect the geographic distribution of these outbreaks is limited, challenging public health intervention planning. METHODS: Anthrax surveillance data reported in southern Kenya from 2011 to 2017 were modeled using a boosted regression trees (BRT) framework. An ensemble of 100 BRT experiments was developed using a variable set …

Impact of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic in Coastal Kenya.

The 1918 influenza pandemic was the most significant pandemic recorded in human history. Worldwide, an estimated half billion persons were infected and 20 to 100 million people died in three waves during 1918 to 1919. Yet the impact of this pandemic has been poorly documented in many countries especially those in Africa. We used colonial-era records to describe the impact of 1918 influenza pandemic in the Coast Province of Kenya. We gathered quantitative data on facility use and all-cause mortality from 1912 to 1925, and pandemic-specific data from active reporting from September 1918 to March…

Seroprevalence of Zika virus in selected regions in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: The Zika virus pandemic in South America in 2015-2016 and the association of Zika virus infection with neurological complications such as microcephaly in newborns distressed the global community. There is limited data on the prevalence of Zika virus in Kenya despite evidence of its circulation in East Africa. This study aimed at assessing the seroprevalence of Zika virus in selected areas in Kenya. METHODS: Healthy adult human sera originally collected from Nairobi, Eldoret and Kisumu from 2009 to 2014 and archived at the University of Nairobi laboratories were examined for Zika v…

Cytokines associated with Burkitt's lymphoma in western Kenya.

OBJECTIVE: Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) is a common aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in East and Central Africa among children. Persistent infections with Epstein Barr virus or Plasmodium falciparum are associated with immune hyperstimulation. It is hypothesised that inadvertent cytokine responses to infections indirectly or directly influence B cell neoplastic transformation through c-myelocytomatosis (c-myc) gene translocation. We sought to describe cytokines in children and adolescents with BL. Participants were recruited from western Kenya with parental consent, diagnosis confirmed using histo…

Factors associated with cholera in Kenya, 2008-2013.

INTRODUCTION: Kenya experienced widespread cholera outbreaks in 1997-1999 and 2007-2010. The re-emergence of cholera in Kenya in 2015 indicates that cholera remains a public health threat. Understanding past outbreaks is important for preventing future outbreaks. This study investigated the relationship between cholera occurrence in Kenya and various environmental and demographic factors related to water, sanitation, socio-economic status, education, urbanization and availability of health facilities during the time period 2008-2013. METHODS: The primary outcome analyzed was the number of cho…

Factors associated with repeat induced abortion in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Over six million induced abortions were reported in Africa in 2008 with over two million induced abortions occurring in Eastern Africa. Although a significant proportion of women in the region procure more than one abortion during their reproductive period, there is a dearth of research on factors associated with repeat abortion. METHODS: Data for this study come from the Magnitude and Incidence of Unsafe Abortion Study conducted by the African Population and Health Research Center in Kenya in 2012. The study used a nationally-representative sample of 350 facilities (level II to l…
