Transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (Trans PRK) is a relatively new technology for refractive surgery and has shown promising results in myopia correction. The data on hyperopia correction by this method are limited. In this review, we have attempted to understand the outcomes of this technology on hyperopic eyes. There are comparable results with conventional PRK and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) as far as refractive stability, regression rate, predictability, and post-operative complications are concerned. The best results have been obtained in lower hyperopic corrections. In …

A 42-year-old woman had uneventful bilateral laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK) to correct myopia. She experienced intense pain in the first postoperative week and obtained topical oxybuprocaine for pain relief. Subsequently, she developed bilateral persistent corneal epithelial defects, epithelial edema, and bullae that failed to heal with bandage contact lens and topical lubricants. Over the next 4 months, there was progressive corneal stromal thinning and descemetocele formation in 1 eye, requiring application of cyanoacrylate glue, and stromal edema and scarring in the other …

A 36-year-old man sustained an indolent keratitis following a minor corneal trauma. Nocardia brasiliensis was isolated from cultures of the corneal scrapings. Fortified topical antibiotics, based on in vitro drug sensitivity testing, were intensively applied for weeks without clinical improvement. The patient underwent therapeutic lamellar keratectomy, which led to a rapid and complete resolution. The site of the keratectomy reepithelialized within 2 days and became a faint subepithelial haze thereafter. The visual acuity improved to 20/20 and there was no evidence of recurrence during the sub…
