Retroperitoneoscopic nephrectomy for non-functioning kidneys related to renal stone disease.

Laparoscopic nephrectomy has become the gold standard procedure for nonfunctioning or symptomatic benign kidneys due to renal calculi, obstructive, refluxive, and inflammatory nephropathies or renovascular hypertension. We aimed to investigate the effect of renal calculi as a reason of non-functioning on the progress and complication rates of the retroperitoneoscopic nephrectomy (RPN). During a 2-year period, 108 patients with benign renal conditions underwent RPN by single surgeon. Among these patients, total of 27 (Group 1) with a non-functioning kidney due to renal calculi were retrospectiv

Evaluation of open surgery for staghorn calculi in children.

We evaluated the results of open surgery in 19 children with staghorn calculi. The median age was 3.5 years (range 10 months to 14 years). One patient had bilateral calculi, hence 20 renal units were operated upon. Stone clearance was achieved in 19 cases by means of a Gil-Vernet pyelocalycolithotomy, alone (n = 10) or in combination with limited radial nephrotomies (n = 9). Extended nephrolithotomy was performed in only 1 case. Complete stone clearance was achieved in 13 kidneys (65%). Long-term follow-up showed that there was no stone recurrence in any of the 13 renal units rendered complete

[Masked urothel carcinoma of kidney pelvis and ureter].

Behind the typical signs of a staghorn calculus of a kidney and a ureterocele with calculi in x-ray a transitional cell carcinoma of the kidney and the whole ureter was found. The nonfunction of the organ was thought to be due to pyonephrosis. Four other cases reported in the literature are discussed.

Drug-Induced Kidney Stones and Crystalline Nephropathy: Pathophysiology, Prevention and Treatment.

Drug-induced calculi represent 1-2% of all renal calculi. The drugs reported to produce calculi may be divided into two groups. The first one includes poorly soluble drugs with high urine excretion that favour crystallisation in the urine. Among them, drugs used for the treatment of patients with human immunodeficiency, namely atazanavir and other protease inhibitors, and sulphadiazine used for the treatment of cerebral toxoplasmosis, are the most frequent causes. Besides these drugs, about 20 other molecules may induce nephrolithiasis, such as ceftriaxone or ephedrine-containing preparations

A radiological study of urinary tract disease in Port Moresby 1972-74.

During a 21/2 year period at Port Moresby, 852 patients had intravenous pyelograms. Two thirds of the patients were males and over half were Papua New Guineans. 34% of the patients had detectable urinary tract abnormalities of whom 38% had urinary calculi. Renal and ureteric calculi were particularly common in expatriate males, being found twice as commonly as in Papua New Guinean males. Although there were some Papua New Guinean male children with bladder calculi, the frequency appeared less than that found in some other developing countries. Other common findings included congenital urinary

[Arterial blood supply of horseshoe kidneys with special reference to percutaneous lithotripsy].

The arterial blood supply of six horseshoe kidneys has been examined in respect to percutaneous lithotripsy, i.e. puncture of the renal pelvis in its dorsolateral aspect including nephroscopic extraction of renal calculi. The blood supply of horseshoe kidneys is presupposed by evolution. Besides the definitive renal arteries there are accessory arteries which may be regarded as persistent mesonephric arteries. We distinguish between proper accessory arteries entering the horseshoe kidney at its hilum and aberrant accessory arteries which reach either the upper extremities or the zone of fusion

[Raising of the treatment efficacy of renal colic and prophylaxis of acute calculous pyelonephritis in patient with ureterolithiasis].

In 116 patients with renal colic, caused by stones of ureters, conservative treatment with application of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) was conducted. Under the influence of oxygenotherapy during 3 days obstruction of the urinary tracts in all patients had disappeared as well as acute urostasis, clinic symptoms of the renal colic, progress of an acute infectious-inflammatory process stopped, complications were eliminated. Echo-positive subjects had disappeared from kidneys, in one patient renal calculus had dissolved, in 5--calculi had reduced in size and fragmentated, in 9--had not changed. In

Emphysematous pyelonephritis and infection-related calculi.

Emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN) is a critical and life-threatening necrotizing urinary tract infection, marked by gas formation within the renal parenchyma, collecting system or peri-nephric tissue and is extremely rare in children. Proteinaceous calculi are a rare type of kidney stones, reported in only 0.5% of nephrolithiasis cases, and rarely reported in the pediatric population. We present a case of a 16-year-old female with concurrent EPN and proteinaceous calculi with recurrent Escherichia coli urinary tract infection.

Do stones still kill? An analysis of death from stone disease 1999-2013 in England and Wales.

OBJECTIVES: To analyse the trends in the number of deaths attributable to urolithiasis in England and Wales over the past 15 years (1999-2013). Urolithiasis has an estimated lifetime risk of 12% in males and 6% in females and is not perceived as a life-threatening pathology. Admissions with urinary calculi contribute to 0.5% of all inpatient hospital stays, and the number of deaths attributable to stone disease has yet to be identified and presented. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Office of National Statistics data relating to causes of death from urolithiasis, coded as International Classification o

Upper tract transitional cell carcinoma clinically mimicking inflammatory renal pathology: A report of three cases.

Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) of the renal pelvis and the ureter is incidentally detected in a small proportion of cases. However, the majority of UTUC cases present with hematuria, flank pain, and clot colic. Typical imaging features include hydronephrosis of the kidney (s) due to obstruction by the mass with a soft-tissue lesion that typically shows low-grade enhancement with or without a filling defect. Rarely, such a tumor may present with signs and symptoms mimicking an inflammatory or infective pathology of the kidney and is diagnosed only on biopsy or on nephrectomy. We presen

[Surgical treatment of coral calculi in the renal pelvis].

In the years between 1971 and 1979 in the Department of Urological Surgery of the Municipal Weil Emil Hospital in 16 of the 72 coral calculi filling the renal pelvis primary (so-called uric acid) calculi were found to which lytholysis was applied. Fifty-six cases (secondary calculi) were operated, in the majority by conservative surgery (40 cases), 16 patients were nephrectomized. The incidence of coral stones is twice as high in women as in men. Congestion and infections play the major role in their pathogenesis, hypercalciuria is less frequent. Up-to-date possibilities of examination ensure
