The anatomical relationships between the renal venous arrangement and the pelviocaliceal system were studied in 52, 3-dimensional polyester resin corrosion endocasts. In 53.8% of the cases, there were 3 large venous trunks and in 28.8% there were 2 venous trunks joining to form the main renal vein. Intrarenal veins demonstrated free anastomoses that were disposed in 3 systems of longitudinal arcades (stellate, arcuate and interlobar veins). There were large venous collars around caliceal necks and also horizontal arches crossing over calices to link anterior and posterior veins. In 84.6% of th

Experiments were performed in vitro to explore the influence of isoproterenol on the canine pelvi-ureteral system. The rhythmic changes of intrapelvic pressure became no longer manifest and simultaneously recorded electromyograms revealed disappearance of peristalsis at sites distal to the upper region of renal pelvis following application of isoproterenol, while the pacemaker at the pelvi-calyceal border continued to discharge with an enhanced pace. This result has demonstrated that the renal pelvic pressure recorded during treatment with isoproterenol did not reflect the pacemaker activity o

Muscle coat specimens from human calices, renal pelvis, pelvi-ureteric junction, upper, middle and lower ureter segments were examined under an electron microscope. These specimens were taken from 8 patients who had undergone nephroureterectomy: 6 for localized renal carcinoma and 2 for papillary tumor of the pelvis. Two types of smooth muscle cells were observed, "typical" muscle cells and "special" muscle cells. The latter are rich in agranular endoplasmic reticulum, have few myofilaments and are interconnected in numerous, extended, peculiar contact areas. The ratio between these two types

Nephro-ureterectomy is the standard treatment for transitional carcinoma of the renal pelvis and caliceal system. In recent years a modification of the conventional two-incision technique has been described in which the intramural ureter is resected endoscopically and the remaining ureter is removed in continuity with the kidney through a single loin incision. Twenty-one patients had their renal pelvic tumours treated by this modified technique between 1970 and 1983. Of 16 patients available for analysis, 37.5% subsequently developed bladder tumours. It was concluded that this modified techniq

Megacalyces is an uncommon congenital urinary anomaly consisting of oversized calyces and a renal pelvis of normal caliber. The under development of the pyramids with lack of projection of the papillae into the calyces probably produces the dilatation of the calyces. The diagnostic criteria are the characteristic appearance of the calyces, the normal caliber of the pelvis and ureter, and the absence of vesico-ureteral reflux. Two cases of congenital megacalyces are presented.

A 4.5-month-old Standard-bred filly was referred for evaluation of pigmenturia. Initially, the pigmenturia had resolved with the administration of antibiotics, only to recur after their withdrawal. A dark red urine sample contained numerous RBC, WBC, and gram-negative rods (Escherichia coli). Ultrasonography revealed the right kidney to be large, with multiple cystic structures and a dilated renal pelvis and calices. Cystoscopy revealed a large blood clot within the bladder and urine coming from the left ureteral opening. Urine was not observed coming from the right ureter. It was suspected th

Calyceal diverticulum is an eventration of the upper collecting system within the renal parenchyma. This nonsecretory outpouching is lined by transitional epithelium and communicates with the main collecting system via a narrow channel. Tumor growth arising from a calyceal diverticulum is rare, and primary squamous cell carcinoma arising from a calyceal diverticulum has never been described in literature. Herein, we report a case of primary squamous cell carcinoma arising from a calyceal diverticulum and present initial imaging of a benign-appearing cystic lesion.

We report a case of congenital bilateral urinary tract anomalies presenting as an abdominal mass with chronic renal failure. The anomalies comprised a retroiliac ureter with grade IV vesicoureteral reflux on the right side, which resulted in a nonfunctioning pyonephrotic right kidney, and a transversely malrotated hydronephrotic left kidney with a calculus. An initial attempt to improve the drainage of the left kidney by posterior transposition of the ureter failed. Subsequently, right nephrectomy and crossed ureterocaliceal anastomosis with the right ureter were performed. The reflux was trea

Two cases are presented of successful percutaneous removal of adherent calyceal calculi which were initially inaccessible for removal with the rigid nephroscope. In each case, the calculus was dislodged from the calyceal wall by the direct force of a needle introduced percutaneously against the stone. In the first patient, a wedged calyceal calculus was dislodged percutaneously and manipulated into the renal pelvis the day before extraction using the rigid nephroscope. In the second patient, the adherent calculus was dislodged percutaneously at the same time of endoscopic removal. In both pati

A case is reported of hemorrhagic calico papillitis showing unilateral hematuria. There was no evidence of pathological changes either in i.v.P. or in retrograde pyelogram, angiogram, or angiogram with epinephrine. Large were found in the urine papillary cellgroups, suspicious for papilloma of the renal pelvis. It is pointed on the difficulty of differentiating such cellgroups from real papillomas of the renal pelvis. Possible are discussed causes of this mucosa proliferation and dysplasia. If there is found the following trias: unilateral hematuria, pseudopapillomatous cellgroups in urine, mi

In 416 patients with renal and ureteric calculi other than large staghorns we found that when it was possible to identify the calyx of origin of the stones, the lower poles were involved in 36-6% of males and 40-4% of females. In the follow up of the 115 lower poles originally containing stones the recurrence rate was 17% in those who were merely observed, 56% in those treated by pyelo- or nephrolithotomy, and zero in those treated by partial neprectomy. But when these cases were looked at more closely it was found that recurrences were virtually confined to lower poles which had originally ha

The congenital anomalies of urogenital system are not uncommon. The anomalies of renal collecting system form a complex subset of urogenital anomalies. Among these, extrarenal calyces are one of the infrequently found anomalies of the renal collecting system. Extrarenal calyces may be detected incidentally or when thoroughly investigated for its associated complications. We report two cases of extrarenal calyces characterized by the presence of major calyces and renal pelvis outside the renal parenchyma. The awareness of this anomaly can help in making the definitive preoperative diagnosis and

PURPOSE: Ureterocalicostomy is occasionally indicated for reconstruction of recurrent, recalcitrant ureteropelvic junction obstruction associated with postoperative fibrosis and a relatively inaccessible renal pelvis. We investigated the feasibility of performing laparoscopic ureterocalicostomy in a survival porcine model. Anatomical, histological and chronic functional outcomes were evaluated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Laparoscopic ureterocalicostomy was performed in 10 survival female swine. A ureteropelvic junction obstruction model was created by laparoscopic ligation of a 2 to 3 cm. segment

A case of longstanding chronic pyelonephritis associated with severe recurrent nephrolithiasis followed by excessive lipomatosis, ureteritis cystica and xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is presented. In addition to the definition and morphologic description of lipomatosis its differential diagnosis is discussed. This also applies to the pathogenesis of these diseases. The special role of lipomatosis in the perpetuation of a circulus vitiosus is stressed. In special cases it seems to be justified to speak of clinical malignant lipomatosis.

We present 8 patients with transitional cell carcinoma of the kidney who underwent preoperative computerized tomographic examination of the lesions. The computerized tomographic findings are discussed and are correlated with the conventional radiographic appearance. The tumor presents on computerized tomographic examination as a solid mass in the renal pelvis and/or in a ballooned calix, with displacement and compression of the renal sinus fat. It shows attenuation values of 8 to 20H and enhances minimally after intravenous injection of iodinated contrast material. Trapping of contrast materia
