Akhmeta virus is a zoonotic Orthopoxvirus first identified in 2013 in the country of Georgia. Subsequent ecological investigations in Georgia have found evidence that this virus is widespread in its geographic distribution within the country and in its host-range, with rodents likely involved in its circulation in the wild. Yet, little is known about the pathogenicity of this virus in rodents. We conducted the first laboratory infection of Akhmeta virus in CAST/EiJ Mus musculus to further characterize this novel virus. We found a dose-dependent effect on mortality and weight loss (p < 0.05). A…

Pigeons (Columba livia) are used in biomedical research for studies of vision, cognition, neuronal pathways, and spatial orientation. Because there are few commercial laboratory sources, research pigeons are typically acquired from local fancier breeders or bred onsite. For acquired pigeons, the health and vaccine status is often unknown. A juvenile pigeon, born onsite and living in an enclosed outdoor loft, presented with small, bleeding, wart-like lesions on the medial aspects of digits 1 and 4. Topical treatment was initiated. Within a week, 4 fledglings were reported for small, dark papula

Five African green monkeys inoculated intratracheally with 7.5 x 10(3) to 1.4 x 10(5) plaque-forming units of simian varicella virus (SVV) were subjected to clinical, laboratory, pathologic, and virologic analyses to study the pathogenesis of acute varicella. All animals developed viremia and rash and were sacrificed 8 to 11 days post-infection. No serum was available for postmortem serologic studies. Examination of multiple organs for pathologic changes and for SVV-specific antigen and nucleic acid revealed inflammation, hemorrhagic necrosis, and intranuclear Cowdry A inclusions in liver, lun

Community-acquired bloodstream infections (CBSIs) occur in the out-of-hospital setting (44%) and increase the overall mortality from bloodstream infections (BSIs) by 7.2% per year. The development of CBSIs depends on both comorbid and polymorbid diseases and the patients' age. The causes of CBSIs are: respiratory, hepatobiliary gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts and dental interventions. The etiology of CBSIs is characterized by the isolation of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) (32%), E. coli (27%). To investigate community-acquired bloodstream infection in therapeutic patients. The

Our understanding of the effects of maternal Zika virus infection on the newborn continues to evolve. First discovered in 1947 in the Zika Forest in Uganda, the world became more aware of the virus in 2015, with reports of hundreds of cases of microcephaly in Brazilian newborns whose mothers reported symptoms related to Zika viral infection during pregnancy. This article reviews the current guidelines for laboratory evaluation of newborns with possible congenital Zika virus infection.

Hymenolepis diminuta is a tapeworm that occurs worldwide. It is known to be found commonly in areas where large amounts of food grains or other dry feed products, which are the favorite foods for rats. Transmission of disease to human is uncommon; however, it may be a serious threat for population who are living in rural areas which are suffering from excessive rodents. Here, this study had done on spontaneous H. diminuta infection in laboratory rats as a model. Out of thirty five adult laboratory rats investigated for parasitic diseases only nine (25.71%) were diagnosed positive for spontaneo

Histopathological findings were described in naturally infected laboratory mice in conjunction with the presence of oocysts in the feces related to cryptosporidiosis of the stomach. Diagnosis of infection was made by the observation of oocysts which were indistinguishable from those of Tyzzer's original description of Cryptosporidium muris seen in feces. In addition to this, endogenous developmental stages of the parasite in histologic preparations of tissues obtained at the time of postmortem examination were observed only in the gastric glands of the stomach. In light microscopy, numerous sm

Physicians are aware of the congenital rubella syndrome. Serodiagnosis is usually used to detect rubella infection in pregnant women and their fetuses. Although being considered the cornerstone of serodiagnosis, the hemagglutination inhibition test is gradually being replaced by new more convenient methods. Tests to detect IgM eliminate the need for paired sera to diagnose acute rubella infection. However, because of the possibilities of false positive, IgM results should be interpreted with caution. Detection of IgM in cord blood and new genetic technology made the diagnosis of infection in u

Laboratory-acquired haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) has been reported in many countries. A serological survey of laboratory white rats and of laboratory personnel for antibodies to hantaviruses was conducted in Singapore. Forty-four per cent (143/329) of rats were seropositive by the indirect immunofluorescent antibody test but none had hantaviral antigens in lung tissues. Two of 74 laboratory personnel were seropositive but neither had a history of clinical illness. The high seropositivity rate among laboratory rats led to their replacement with Hantaan virus-free strains. To el

In immunodeficient patients, particularly in those with acquired immune deficiency syndrome, cryptosporidia can cause severe, sometimes life-threatening and protracted diarrhoea. There is no specific antiparasitic therapy available so far. In AIDS patients an immunomodulatory therapy, e.g. with interleukin-2, may possibly lead to an improvement of a concomitant cryptosporidiosis. In immunocompetent patients cryptosporidia cause a mild self-limited diarrhoea. People mostly endangered are children and those who have contacts with animals. Cryptosporidia have also been found in tropical areas--es
