Induction of autism-related behavior in male mice by early-life vitamin D deficiency: association with disruption of the gut microbial composition and homeostasis.

Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) during early life emerges as a potential risk factor for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Individuals with autism commonly exhibit lower vitamin D (VD) levels compared to the general population, and VD deficiency is prevalent during pregnancy and lactation. Moreover, gastrointestinal comorbidity, prevalent in ASD patients, correlates closely with disruptions in the gut microbiota and altered intestinal permeability. Therefore, it is fascinating and significant to explore the effects of maternal VD deficiency during pregnancy and lactation on the maturation of the gut

Dopamine Partial Agonists in Pregnancy and Lactation: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: Dopamine partial agonists are drugs initially developed to treat schizophrenia, seeking a double effect of increased dopaminergic transmission in the prefrontal cortex and decrease in the accumbens/striatum. Of these drugs, aripiprazole, brexpiprazole, and cariprazine are currently marketed and used in schizophrenia spectrum and mood disorders. It is debated whether patients with psychiatric disorders becoming pregnant should discontinue or continue their antipsychotic treatment despite some risks for the fetus, i.e., whether it is worse to have an untreated disorder or

Lifetime performance traits of Holstein cows: implications of first-lactation milk yield and culling causes.

The study examined the impacts of first-lactation milk yield and culling causes on lifetime performance traits in Holstein cows culled after their second to sixth parities. Complete lactations from 12,209 records belonging to 4522 culled cows were included in the study. Reproductive problems, mastitis, metabolic disorders, lameness, endemic diseases, and respiratory diseases represented culling causes. The resulting means were 371 ± 2.0 days for days in milk 30,223 ± 374 kg for lifetime milk yield, 13.5 ± 0.4 kg for milk per day of cow age, 38 ± 0.4 months for productive life, 68 ± 0.4 months

Perinatal exposure to paracetamol: Dose and sex-dependent effects in behaviour and brain's oxidative stress markers in progeny.

Paracetamol (PAR) has been employed worldwide for pain and fever treatment during pregnancy and lactation. Epidemiologic studies have shown that exposure to PAR can increase the risk for developmental disorders, such as attention-deficit hyperactive disorder and autism spectrum disorder. This study aimed to investigate if gestational and lactational exposure to human-relevant doses of PAR could alter behavioural and brain oxidative stress parameters in the rat`s offspring. Wistar dams were gavaged daily with water or PAR (35 mg/kg/ or 350 mg/kg) during gestational day 6 to weaning (postnatal d

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy investigation of hyperventilation in subjects with panic disorder and comparison subjects.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate differential effects of hyperventilation on brain lactate in patients with panic disorder and comparison subjects as a possible mechanism for explaining previous observations of an excess rise in brain lactate among panic disorder subjects during lactate infusion. METHOD: Seven treatment-responsive patients with panic disorder and seven healthy comparison subjects were studied with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy to measure brain lactate during controlled, voluntary hyperventilation over a period of 20 minutes. Hyperventilation wa

Rumen-protected glucose supplementation alters fecal microbiota and its metabolic profiles in early lactation dairy cows.

INTRODUCTION: Negative energy balance (NEB) is the pathological basis of metabolic disorders in early lactation dairy cows. Rumen-protected glucose (RPG) is a feed additive to relieve NEB of cows in early lactation. The aims of the current study were to evaluate the impact of different doses of RPG supply on fecal microbiota and metabolome in early lactation dairy cows, and their correlation with each other. METHODS: A total of 24 multiparous Holstein dairy cows in early lactation were randomly assigned to one of four treatments for the first 35 days of the early lactation period, as follows:

Sexually Dimorphic Impacts of Early Life BCAAs Supplementation on Metabolic Dysfunctions in Adult Mice.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Early-life environmental exposures, including nutritional supply, can influence health in adulthood. Leucine, isoleucine, and valine are collectively known as branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). While BCAAs are essential nutrients, their elevated abundances in adults have been tightly associated with metabolic disorders. However, whether excessive intake of BCAAs in early life affects the metabolic dysfunctions in adult life remains unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: Continuous BCAAs supplementation in drinking water throughout gestation, lactation, and early-juvenile period r

Impact of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) during pregnancy and lactation: a focus on short and long-term vascular effects.

SSRIs are the first choice for the treatment of mood disorders during pregnancy and lactation. Despite the known side effects, the benefits/risks balance suggests their use. Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) are the main vascular effects of these drugs, with mechanisms that involves endothelial dysfunction in feto-placental system. These data are supported by animal models, even if preliminary findings are not yet adequately supported by molecular and clinical data.

Breastfeeding in the woman with a compromised nervous system.

An increasing number of women with physical limitations are choosing to conceive and are entering the health care system for the care of their pregnancies. These women are faced with the choice of how to feed the child. Although research specific to lactation and nervous system disorders could not be found, this paper reviews selected articles from the literature on three central nervous system disorders: spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and stroke. Potential effects on breastfeeding are discussed.

Epidemiology of metabolic disorders in the periparturient dairy cow.

The descriptive epidemiology and risk factors were reviewed for six clinical disorders: milk fever, downer cow syndrome, hypomagnesemic tetany, udder edema, left displaced abomasum, and ketosis. Data were included also from preliminary analyses of a data set from approximately 61,000 Finnish Ayrshire cows. A web of postulated associations among the metabolic disorders and other risks factors (previous lactation diseases and milk yield, calf factors, certain dry period nutritional factors, dystocia, retained placenta, and metritis) was diagrammed.

[Lactate determination at rest and during bicycle ergometry in healthy probands and in patients with mitochondrial myopathies].

Measuring lactate during moderate exercise is a useful tool in the diagnosis of mitochondrial disorders. It was the aim of this study, to develop reference limits for lactate at rest, during exercise and after the exercise. We investigated 18 healthy subjects and 6 patients with a mitochondrial disorder. In controls, serum lactate levels were comparable to already reported findings. In 4 patients lactate levels were markedly increased during the exercise. Measurement of serum lactate is a simple and useful step in the diagnosis of mitochondrial disorders.

Nutritional consequences of chronic maternal conditions during pregnancy and lactation: lupus and diabetes.

Few treated chronic conditions preclude the ability of a mother to conceive. However, consequences of the condition may undermine the pregnancy or aggravate maternal disease. Most chronic conditions require nutritional intervention beyond the normal needs of pregnancy. Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are two common autoimmune disorders that affect women of childbearing age. Little has been published about the long-term consequences of current medication regimens for SLE and their interactions with either nutrient metabolism or requirements. Mor

Peripartum Ca and P homeostasis in multiparous sows fed adequate or excess dietary Ca.

The recent increased prevalence of uterine prolapses in sows around parturition has led to inferences that the prolapses may be associated with hypocalcemia. However, limited data are available to support that hypocalcemia occurs in sows. Hypocalcemia in dairy cows is associated with feeding excess dietary Ca during late gestation. The excess Ca is assumed to suppress homeostatic mechanisms critical to maintain serum Ca concentrations as the Ca demand increases during the early stages of lactation. In this experiment, sows were fed diets with excess Ca during late gestation and early lactation

Clinical and Legal Considerations Regarding Breastfeeding on Psychiatric Units.

Women in the postpartum period are at especially high risk of developing psychiatric disorders, and in severe cases, they may require inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. Because of the lack of specialized units for peripartum mothers in the United States, this treatment is usually relegated to general inpatient psychiatric units. Despite the clear benefit of breastfeeding for both mother and child, lactation can be a barrier to placement on a general inpatient psychiatric unit and often is not supported during the hospital stay. Limiting access to inpatient psychiatric care for postpartum m

A longitudinal serological follow-up of Neospora caninum natural infection in dairy goats.

Neospora caninum is a major cause of reproductive losses in ruminants, but information on antibody dynamics in naturally infected goats remains limited. This study provides the first longitudinal assessment of anti-N. caninum antibody dynamics and seroconversion during gestation, parturition, and lactation in a semi-intensive goat herd in Argentina. A total of 262 serum samples were collected from 45 goats at six physiological stages, from early gestation to 100 days of lactation, and analyzed using the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Overall seropositivity was high (88.9%), with an

Effects of tobacco smoke exposure during lactation on nutritional and hormonal profiles in mothers and offspring.

Exposure to tobacco smoke is related to changes in energy balance regulation and several endocrine dysfunctions. Previously, we showed that maternal nicotine (the main addictive compound of tobacco) exposure exclusively during lactation affects biochemical profiles in mothers, milk, and pups. As the possible consequences for mothers and offspring of maternal smoking during lactation are still unknown, we evaluated the effects of tobacco smoke exposure on nutritional, biochemical, and hormonal parameters in dams and pups at weaning. After 72 h from birth, lactating rats were divided into two gr

Hesperetin and it nanocrystals ameliorate social behavior deficits and oxido-inflammatory stress in rat model of autism.

Prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) induces behavioral disorders and enhancement of oxido-inflammatory stress in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). The aim of this study was to investigate the comparative effects of hesperetin (Hst) and nano-hesperetin on social behavior deficits and oxido-inflammatory indexes in prenatally valproic acid-exposed rat offspring. Pregnant Wistar rats on embryonic day 0 (E0) were segregated into six groups; Group-1 served as vehicle, received distillated water orally (PO) from E1 until the end of lactation and saline intraperitoneally (i.p) on E12.5. Prescribing for Women in Corrections.

Prescribing for women in jails and prisons requires special consideration and should be informed by extant evidence. Incarcerated women have higher rates of mental illness than both females in the community and incarcerated men. Medication administration concerns that may disproportionately affect female prisoners include drug-drug interactions with contraceptives, intermittent dosing schedules, and concerns about metabolic side effects. Further, pregnancy, lactation, and menopause may all affect medication choices. Incarcerated women frequently have comorbid mental illness, substance use diso

Development and validation of a bioanalytical method for five antidepressants in human milk by LC-MS.

The use of medications during lactation is a common practice; however, pharmacological treatments impose serious doubts to both professionals and nursing mothers regarding the safety of drugs used during this period. Most of drugs are excreted in breast milk and there is great variability in the amount of analytes that can be received by the infant. Dilemmas about breastfeeding arise most commonly in relation to postpartum depression. Depression is a major clinical problem during the postpartum period and the vulnerability to onset or recurrence of depressive symptoms increases the possibility

A method for describing disease patterns during the life span of dairy cows.

This study presents some guidelines for describing the health status of dairy cows over their entire life span. It aims to define some types of health-paths (trajectories) described in terms of disease patterns (at the lactation level) and related to cow characteristics (breed, production potential) and farms. The data were collected over a 20-year period on three experimental farms. Eight diseases were analysed: clinical mastitis, lameness, placental retention, foot rot, digestive disorders, milk fever, metritis, and arthritis. The statistical procedures used were correspondence analysis of t
