Spatial variation of organochlorine pesticides and dissolved organic matter in urban closed lakes.

Closed lakes located in urban parks act as sinks of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), which have been used, for decades, as insecticides, herbicides and fungicides. The closed lakes from Bucharest, Romania, are periodically managed to prevent eutrophication and accumulation of pollutants. However, it is not known if these practices reduce or enhance the legacy pollution with OCPs. The aim of this study was to explore the spatial variation of OCPs in closed lakes. The total concentration of OCPs in water and sediments ranged between 0.0176 and 37.1 µg/L, and between 122 to 1,890 ng/g, respectiv…

Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in global lakes: A review and meta-analysis.

Lakes are an important source of freshwater, containing nearly 90% of the liquid surface fresh water worldwide. Long retention times in lakes mean pollutants from discharges slowly circulate around the lakes and may lead to high ecological risk for ecosystem and human health. In recent decades, antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been regarded as emerging pollutants. The occurrence and distribution of antibiotics and ARGs in global freshwater lakes are summarized to show the pollution level of antibiotics and ARGs and to identify some of the potential risks to ecosystem and…

Community Biological Ammonium Demand: A Conceptual Model for Cyanobacteria Blooms in Eutrophic Lakes.

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) are enhanced by anthropogenic pressures, including excessive nutrient (nitrogen, N, and phos … eptual model was constructed by combining nutrient cycling and CBAD observations from a spectrum of lakes to assess N cycling interactions with CyanoHABs. Model predictions were supported with CBAD data from a Microcystis bloom in Maumee Bay, Lake Erie, during summer 2015. Nitrogen compounds are transformed to reduced, more bioavailable forms (e.g., NH4 …

Heavy metals in the surface sediments of lakes on the Tibetan Plateau, China.

Heavy metal contamination has affected many regions in the world, particularly the developing countries of Asia. We investigated 8 heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, Co, Ni, and As) in the surface sediments of 18 lakes on the Tibetan Plateau. It was found that the distributions of the heavy metals showed no clear spatial pattern on the plateau. The results indicated that the mean concentrations of these metals in the sediment samples diminished as follows: Cr > As > Zn > Ni > Pb > Cu > Co > Cd. The results of geoaccumulation index (I geo) and potential ecological risk factor (E ir ) assessments…

Bioaccumulation and biomagnification of mercury in African lakes: the importance of trophic status.

Despite the global prevalence of both mercury (Hg) contamination and anthropogenic eutrophication, relatively little is known about the beha … el to the next) ranged from 1.9 to 5.6. Furthermore TMFs were significantly lower in hypereutrophic lakes than in meso- and eutrophic lakes, and were negatively related to chlorophyll a concentrations both across our study lakes, and across African lakes for which literature data were available. These observations suggest that THg concentrations were st …

Mercury in the Great Lakes region: bioaccumulation, spatiotemporal patterns, ecological risks, and policy.

This special issue examines bioaccumulation and risks of methylmercury in food webs, fish and wildlife in the Laurentian Great Lakes region of North America, and explores mercury policy in the region and elsewhere in the United States and Canada. A total of 35 papers emanated from a bi-national synthesis of multi-media data from monitoring programs and research investigations on mercury in aquatic and terrestrial biota, a 3-year effort involving more than 170 scientists and decision-makers from 55 different universities, non-governmental organizations, and governmental agencies. Over 290,000 f…

Marine vessels as substitutes for heavy-duty trucks in Great Lakes freight transportation.

This paper applies a geospatial network optimization model to explore environmental, economic, and time-of-delivery tradeoffs associated with the application of marine vessels as substitutes for heavy-duty trucks operating in the Great Lakes region. The geospatial model integrates U.S. and Canadian highway, rail, and waterway networks to create an intermodal network and characterizes this network using temporal, economic, and environmental attributes (including emissions of carbon dioxide, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides, volatile organic compounds, and nitrogen oxides). A c…

Strategies to lower methyl mercury concentrations in hydroelectric reservoirs and lakes: A review.

Mercury (Hg) concentrations in fish in lakes are elevated due to increased global cycling of Hg. A special case of elevated Hg concentrations in fish occurs in new hydroelectric reservoirs because of increased rates of converting Hg in the environment into methyl mercury (MeHg). People and wildlife that eat fish from hydroelectric reservoirs have an elevated risk of accumulating too much MeHg. Demand for electrical energy is leading to the creation of new reservoirs. In 2005, Canada derived 60% of its electricity from hydroelectric reservoirs. As a result, hydroelectric companies and governing…

Proteolytic Activity and Substrate Specificity of Lake Geneva.

Lakewater microorganisms secrete proteases which contribute to the turnover of dissolved organic matter and the degradation of peptidic cont … ity. This pattern was conserved across seasons and water depths and was shared with two other Swiss lakes. In contrast, we observed variability in the numbers and types of less prevalent cleavage sites across samples, suggesting that the degree of heterogeneity in proteolytic substrate specificity varies spatially and temporally. Using class-specific in …

Watershed influences on mercury in tributaries to Lake Ontario.

Mercury (Hg) concentrations and speciation were measured in nine tributaries to Lake Ontario as part of two independent field-sampling programs. Among the study tributaries, mean total Hg (THg) concentrations ranged from 0.9 to 2.6 ng/L; mean dissolved Hg (THgD) ranged from 0.5 to 1.5 ng/L; mean particulate Hg (THgP) ranged from 0.3 to 2.0 ng/L; and mean methylmercury (MeHg) ranged from 0.06 to 0.14 ng/L. Watershed land cover, total suspended solids (TSS), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were evaluated as potential controls of tributary Hg. Significant relationships between THgD and DOC wer

Stormwater runoff to an impaired lake: impacts and solutions.

Stormwater runoff can represent a significant source of pollutants to downstream water bodies. An integrated assessment was conducted for the Spring Lake watershed in western Michigan because of concerns that increased impervious land cover in the watershed, especially in sub-basins adjacent to Spring Lake, would result in greater stormwater runoff and pollutant loads. Spring Lake has a history of high total phosphorus (TP) concentrations and cyanobacterial blooms. An alum treatment, paid for by an assessment, was applied to Spring Lake in 2005 to control internal phosphorus loading; hence, th

Mercury in the pelagic food web of Lake Champlain.

Lake Champlain continues to experience mercury contamination resulting in public advisories to limit human consumption of top trophic level fish such as walleye. Prior research suggested that mercury levels in biota could be modified by differences in ecosystem productivity as well as mercury loadings. We investigated relationships between mercury in different trophic levels in Lake Champlain. We measured inorganic and methyl mercury in water, seston, and two size fractions of zooplankton from 13 sites representing a range of nutrient loading conditions and productivity. Biomass varied signifi

Sulfide species as a sink for mercury in lake sediments.

The interaction between two contrasting examples of lake sediments and small concentrations of mercury added to the sediments in solution has been studied using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Whereas one lake (Esthwaite Water) is biologically productive, with a seasonal cycle of phytoplankton activity, including stratification and Fe(III) reduction, and a mineralogy involving quartz, muscovite, and clinochlore, the other (Botany Pond) remains oxic throughout the year. In the latter case, the sediment is predominantly quartz and calcite. Chemical analyses of these two lake sediments reflectthe

Radiocarbon dating of East african lake levels.

The fluctuations of the key East African lakes discussed are summarized in Fig. 4 which also includes the available evidence from Lake Rukwa (42) and Lake Chad (43) Exceot for Lake Victoria, all of these now lack surface outlets and are situated in much drier climates than the major lakes of the Western Rift Valley, which remain filled to their overflow levels. The apparent differendes among the fluctuations of the lakes are partly due to differendes in the nature of the evidence or the intensity of research or both, although there must also have been important local differences in the histori…

Diversity of antibiotic resistance genes increases in urbanized lakes: A multi-tool screening.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens to cause up to 10 million deaths annually by 2050 if no action is taken. Using shotgun sequencing, we examined the eco-evolutionary dynamics of AMR across urban-rural environment gradients in lake water and sediments, a farm pond and a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). ARGs were identified using multiple databases and five bioinformatic tools, detecting up to 18 ARG classes-more than any single tool alone. ARG diversity was higher in urban lake sediments, urban waters, and wastewater compared to rural lake sediments and water. Among all environments, u
