ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Taraxacum officinale F.H.Wigg. has been traditionally used as a natural laxative in various ethnopharmacological systems. Nevertheless, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy, particularly in treating gastrointestinal disorders like constipation, is still scarce.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims to evaluate the laxative properties of the methanolic extract derived from the aerial parts of T. officinale F by examining its impact on charcoal meal transit through the small intestine and on fecal output in a rodent model.

We have investigated the clinical presentation, laxative use and histopathology of 38 patients with a histological diagnosis of melanosis coli and measured the colonic epithelial apoptosis in these cases. The presence of lipofuscin was confirmed in all cases. Fifteen of the cases had constipation, whilst eight had diarrhoea. Neither constipation nor diarrhoea was present in 13 cases and both were present, at different times, in two. We describe two cases of fatal methemoglobinemia resulting from ingestion of laxative solution inadvertently contaminated with sodium nitrite. Postmortem toxicological examination revealed methemoglobin levels in excess of 75% in both patients--a level that is uniformly fatal.
