Feminizing Leydig cell tumor: endocrine and incubation studies.

A 32-year-old patient with a history of surgery for left gynecomastia four years previously presented with right gynecomastia; a tumor in th … ater in the tumor than in normal peritumoral tissue, while the percentage of the volume occupied by Leydig cells was 34 times higher. This suggests that the aromatase activity of a single tumor cell is very similar to that of a normal Leydig cell. Furthermore, evidence of juxtatumoral Leydig cell hyperplasia in areas where the tumor was well encapsulated sugge …

AFP-producing Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of the ovary.

A tumor of the right ovary in a 21-year-old single woman is reported. Secondary amenorrhea, hirsutism, acne and deepening of the voice were associated with the tumor. Light and electron microscopic examinations showed that the tumor was composed of cells resembling Sertoli and Leydig cells of the testis in their cytology features and growth patterns. High levels of circulating dehydroepiandrosterone, androstenedione, testosterone and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) were found preoperatively. Preoperative estrogen and progesterone levels were all slightly above the upper limits of normal for females. T…

Aquaporin 9 regulates Leydig cell steroidogenesis in diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus induced hyperglycemia increases oxidative stress, which contributes to impairment of male reproductive function. Aquaporin … e role of AQPs in Leydig cell steroidogenesis was analyzed in diabetic rats (in-vivo) and LC540 rat Leydig cells (in vitro) via enzyme assays, quantitative RT-PCR, siRNA knock down and western blotting. AQP 9 was significantly up-regulated in STZ-induced diabetic rat testis and high glucose treated LC540 cells. Further, oxidative stress marker nuclear factor e …

MicroRNA regulation of the proliferation and apoptosis of Leydig cells in diabetes.

BACKGROUND: The number of patients with diabetes is increasing worldwide. Diabetic testicular damage can cause spermiogenesis disorders and … miRNA-mRNA diabetic testicular damage regulatory network and screened for key miRNAs. We also used Leydig cells to generate a diabetic cell model and detected the downstream target genes of miRNAs, secretion of testosterone, and proliferation and apoptotic levels to elucidate the role and mechanism of the selected miRNAs in diabetic testicular damage. RESULT …

FXRα modulates leydig cell endocrine function in mouse.

The hypothalamic-pituitary axis exert a major control over endocrine and exocrine testicular functions. The hypothalamic-pituitary axis corresponds to a cascade with the Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone secreted by the hypothalamus, which stimulates the synthesis and the release of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle Stimulating Hormone by the gonadotropic cells of the anterior pituitary. The LH signaling pathway controls the steroidogenic activity of the Leydig cells via the activation of the luteinizing hormone/choriogonadotropin receptor. In order to avoid a runaway system, sex steroids exe…

[Ultrasound characteristics of testicular Leydig cell tumors , , , 1.].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the color Doppler ultrasonic characteristics of testicular Leydig cell tumors (LCT) and improve the clinical diagnosis of the disease. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 4 cases of testicular LCT diagnosed and treated in our hospital and summarized the experience in the ultrasonic diagnosis of LCT with a review of the relevant literature. RESULTS: All the 4 testicular LCTs were solitary and quasi-round, 1 in the left and 3 in the right. The smallest mass was 1.8 × 1.5 cm and the largest 3.1 × 2.5 cm, and 2 were complicated by hydrocele of tunica vaginalis. The margins

Leydig cell hyperplasia in children: Case series and review.

INTRODUCTION: Leydig cell hyperplasia (LCH) and Leydig cell tumours (LCTs) in children are rare, typically presenting with precocious puberty. Previously, orchidectomy was the routine management; however, more recently, testis-sparing surgery has been performed with good results. We present a series of unusual presentations of LCH, raising new management questions, and a review of the literature regarding LCH and LCT in children. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a literature search using Ovid Medline, PubMed, and Google Scholar, producing 456 articles. We reviewed all case reports and series contai

Leydig cell tumor in grey zone: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Leydig cell tumor constitutes only about 1-3% of testicular neoplasms. There is apparently increased incidence in the last few years; one possible explanation for this phenomenon is the widespread use of ultrasound technology and the subsequent increased early detection of smaller lesions that have not been found in historical series. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of Leydig cell tumor of testis in a patient presenting with painless long standing slowly growing left scrotal mass who found to have intrapulmonary nodule and multiple enlarged retroperitoneal lymph nodes on sta

Preorchiectomy Leydig Cell Dysfunction in Patients With Testicular Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about preorchiectomy Leydig cell function in patients with testicular germ cell cancer (TGCC). The aim was to estimate the prevalence of preorchiectomy Leydig cell dysfunction and evaluate factors associated with this condition in a cohort of patients with TGCC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We evaluated luteinizing hormone (LH), total testosterone (TT), calculated free T (cFT), estradiol, and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) preorchiectomy in 561 patients with TGCC and compared with 561 healthy controls. We calculated TT/LH and cFT/LH ratios and constructed bivariate c

[Testicular malignant Leydig cell tumor: A case report].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicopathological features of testicular malignant Leydig cell tumor (TMLCT) and improve the non-invasive diagnosis of the disease. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathological data on a case of TMLCT, detected the circulating tumor cells (CTC) in the peripheral venous blood, and reviewed the related literature. RESULTS: The patient, a 47-year-old male, underwent radical orchidoepididymectomy under general anesthesia. Postoperative pathology confirmed the lesion to be TMLCT, which was mainly composed of Leydig cells and suspected with vessel ca…

[Leydig cell tumor as a cause of hirsutism in a postmenopausal woman].

BACKGROUND: Hirsutism or virilization in postmenopausal women may be due to increased testosterone levels caused by an androgen-secreting tumor. The preoperative localization of small ovarian or adrenal androgen-secreting tumors is difficult. CASE REPORT: A 61-year-old, postmenopausal woman presented with progressive hirsutism and deepening of voice over the last 9 years. Serum testosterone was very high (almost 30 nmol/l). Computed tomographic (CT) scans of the adrenals and ultrasonography of the pelvis were negative. Selective catheterization and [(18)F]FDG-PET/CT investigation raised the s

Some considerations on the human Leydig cell (immunohistochemical observations).

The presence and functional activity of human Leydig cells were assessed at diverse stages of human gonad development in biopsies obtained from healthy controls and subjects with cryptorchidism or varicocele. In our investigation primary antibodies directed against vimentin and testosterone by immunoperoxidase technique of biotin-streptoavidin amplified system were used to analyse immunoreactive sites. The antivimentin antibody is, in general, a specific marker of cells of mesenchymal origin and also detects the presence of Leydig cells, while the antitestosterone antibody shows the functional…
