OBJECTIVES: To illustrate the close association between a disturbed psychosocial up-bringing, frequent physical illness, and medical interventions.
METHOD: We report a case of a 44-year-old woman with anorexia nervosa (AN) and Sheehan's syndrome who died as a result of a toxic cardiac arrest.
RESULTS: The patient presented with a BMI of 13.6 kg/m(2). She refused any intensive-care treatment and died from toxic cardiac arrest. Postmortem examination revealed an acute gastroenterocolitis.

There has been extensive research into social support (SS) and trauma, but there remains a paucity of knowledge concerning the dynamics of these factors with respect to victims of crime. This review considers the temporal dimension of SS or perceived social support (PSS) in particular, conceptualizing it as an endogenous, dynamic resource Lepore et al. [J. Pers. Soc. Psychol. 61 (1991) 899] that can be depleted by chronic stressors. Based on a discussion of existing research, an explanation is proposed for the inconsistent findings of PSS as a moderator to distress in some cases and a mediator

Functional somatic illness is a clinical concept used to define medically unexplained somatic symptoms considered to express psychological distress. Functional somatic illness may express underlying psychiatric disorders (e.g. fibromyalgia due to non-fearful panic disorder, irritable bowel syndrome due to bipolar disorder). Sustained physiological activation caused by stressful life events combined with catastrophic thinking may be another cause. Functional somatic illness may also be caused by classic conditioning of physiological responses that may have been triggered by biological or emotio

This study focused on investigating the kinds of personal goals young adults have when they are faced with the transition from school to work; the extent to which they reconstruct these goals as a consequence of their success in dealing with this transition; and how their goals influence their depressive symptoms. In order to investigate these research questions, 250 young adults who were facing a transition from school to work were studied at three points of the transition process: while they were still at school; 8 months after their graduation; and 1.5 years after it. At each measurement po

Psycho-oncology has developed during the past decades in the area of medical oncology directly involved in the study of the psychological aspects of cancer. In this study the authors focused in particular on the psychopathological complications of dermatological cancer, the discovery of a possible history of psychiatric disorders prior to the diagnosis of the tumour, the predictive value of the latter concerning further psychiatric complications during cancer, and lastly the possible correlations between stress and the onset of cancer and between religious belief and adaptive strategies. A patient-rated checklist adapted from the Psychiatric Epidemiology Research Interview was used to assess frequency and desirability of life events in the 12 months preceding an index evaluation of a large sample of patients with a DSM-III diagnosis of panic disorder or agoraphobia with panic, on average 12 years after onset of illness. A total of 1,360 events were reported; 25% were considered most undesirable, whereas 22% were estimated to be most desirable. Negative life events were predominantly health-related issues and interpersonal conflicts. Making new friends, having significant succe

The cases of 5 patients with seizures occurring the day of or shortly before their weddings are presented. Major life events may precipitate or exacerbate epileptic or nonepileptic seizures as a result of 1) missed medications, 2) sleep deprivation, 3) alcohol or concomitant medications, 4) hyperventilation, or 5) the emotional state directly or stress indirectly. Seizures occurring at times of psychological stress may be either neurological or psychiatric in origin. The physician treating patients with a new onset or exacerbation of seizures around a major life event must consider all of thes

A multifactorial etiology for narcolepsy has been postulated, stressing the importance of environmental factors in the clinical onset of the condition. Our study evaluated the occurrence of stressful life events in the year preceding the onset of narcolepsy. Fifty narcoleptic and 50 control subjects completed a life event questionnaire (the Schedule of Recent Experiences). The proportion of narcoleptic subjects reporting the presence of life events in the year preceding the onset of narcolepsy was significantly greater than the proportion of control subjects reporting life events in the corres

To understand the clinical characteristics of trichotillomania, 36 patients were investigated at the psychocutaneous special clinic from February 1982 to October 1990. There were 16 males and 20 females. The most prominent age was found in a group of 23 (63.9%) elementary school children, and in regards to the age of disease onset, 35 (97.2%) of our patients were under the age of 18. A 30-year-old woman with schizophrenia and a 6-year-old boy with mental retardation were noted in our study; the remaining 34 patients were generally well without signs of mental illness except for the recurrent f

This is a companion piece to the article "Some Features of Families with Major Affective Disorders," published in Family Process (25: 325-336, 1986). In addition to the family features mentioned in the first article, the authors report on other features that have come to the fore since then. Subsequently, they deal with the therapeutic problems that derive from all of these features. In particular, they elaborate on how the therapists must (and can) maintain their neutrality in the face of the massive polarizations and extremes of the either/or thinking found in these families. There follows a

The frequency of life events during the two years before an exacerbation of ulcer in a duodenal ulcer population was compared with the frequency of these events over the same time period in an age-sex matched probability sample of the community population. The mean number of events and the associated distress and life change scores were similar for both groups. When events were categorised into areas of activity, such as health, bereavement, family and social life, change of residence, etc. and were further classified on the basis of desirability, separation from persons, and problem chronicit

RESULTS: Forty-two participants aged 11-14 or 45+ years reported life
