A Clinical Decision Support System for Remote Monitoring of Cardiovascular Disease Patients: A Clinical Study Protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death globally, taking an estimated 17. 9 million lives each year. Cardiac rehabilitation is shown to reduce mortality and hospital readmissions, while improving physical fitness and quality of life. Despite the recommendations and proven benefits, acceptance and adherence remain low. Mobile health (mHealth) solutions may contribute to more personalized and tailored patient recommendations according to their specific needs. This study protocol aims to assess the effectiveness of a user-friendly, comprehensive Clinical Decisio

Therapeutic interventions to lessen the psychosocial effect of vitiligo in children: A review.

Vitiligo commonly affects children, with half of affected individuals experiencing disease onset before the age of 20. Because childhood is a time of advancement in social and psychological development, understanding the extent of the effect of the disease and means of alleviation is crucial. Vitiligo has been shown to decrease children's quality of life, with greater distress in children with highly visible lesions and darker skin tones. This article reviews the literature regarding interventions that have been analyzed in children. Studies evaluating the effect of camouflage, cognitive behav

Noninvasive respiratory support in the perioperative period.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aims of this review are: to discuss the physiological rationale for noninvasive respiratory support (NRS) in the perioperative period; to give some practical recommendations to safely apply NRS; and to review available clinical data on preventive and curative NRS after cardiac, thoracic and abdominal surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: The most important morbid postoperative pulmonary complication is atelectasis formation, which increases significantly the risk for pneumonia and hypoxic acute respiratory failure. NRS refers to techniques allowing respiratory support without the n

Characterization of Stress in Low-Income, Inner-City Mothers of Children with Poorly Controlled Asthma.

The goal of this longitudinal analysis was to characterize factors associated with the experience of life stress in low-income, inner-city mothers of minority children with high-risk asthma.Participants (n = 276) reported on family demographics, child asthma control and healthcare utilization, social support, contemporary life difficulties (housing, finances, violence exposure) measured by the validated Crisis in Family Systems scale, and daily stress. Latent growth curve modeling examined predictors of life stress across 12 months as a function of home and community difficulties, asthma-speci

An impossible dream?

The extension of assisted dying to those whose natural death is not reasonably foreseeable has very real implications for how we think about life-limiting illness and the systems of care we design to palliate suffering. We now have a new idea of a life-limiting illness; dying is a result of an illness's impact on quality of life, not length of life. In this article, I tell the story of "Sam," whose complex illness and suffering led her to choose an assisted death. I reflect on my own responses to Sam and conclude with a dream for a palliative system of care designed uniquely to support those c

Extracorporeal life support: a simple and effective weapon for postcardiotomy right ventricular failure.

Postcardiotomy right ventricular (RV) failure develops during the perioperative period following pulmonary hypertensive crisis or acute myocardial infarction. This study reports our institutional experience in treating these patients with extracorporeal life support (ECLS). Between June 2002 and July 2005, 46 adults were treated with ECLS for postcardiotomy shock. Acute RV failure was the cause of support in 14 (30%). Patient mean age was 55.7 +/- 15.4 years. Cardiac pathologies were valvular (n = 7), coronary (n = 1), combined coronary and valvular disease (n = 2), complex congenital heart (n

Critical care readiness in conflict and disaster-affected Somalia: mass-casualty response, emergency referral, and continuity of life-saving care special collection: critical care in war and disaster areas.

Critical care readiness during war and disasters is often judged by intensive care unit capacity, yet preventable mortality in fragile health systems may occur before, during, or after ICU-level care. In Somalia, recurrent mass-casualty events, emergency referral constraints, limited oxygen and blood readiness, constrained operative access, and weak post-resuscitation monitoring expose a critical gap between first contact and sustained life-saving care. This Comment addresses that gap by reframing critical care readiness in conflict and disaster-affected Somalia as a pathway problem rather tha

Impact of Burnout on Anaesthesiologists.

Professional burnout syndrome (PBS) is an issue affecting individuals and organizations alike, characterized by emotional exhaustion and reduced effectiveness resulting from overwhelming work demands. Root causes include excessive workload, unrealistic expectations, and blurred work-life boundaries, which are often intensified by organizational culture and inadequate support systems. The consequences range from decreased productivity and creativity to high turnover rates and financial strain on organizations. Mitigating PBS requires a comprehensive approach that addresses both individual and o

Juxtaposing Well-Being and Social Support on Life Satisfaction and Psychological Distress: A Comparative Study of Bhutanese and Malaysian Adults.

This study compared the associations of social support, well-being, life satisfaction, and psychological distress in two Asian contexts: Bhutan and Malaysia. Data from 436 participants revealed more differences than similarities in the hypothesized associations. Among the differences, social support from family, friends, and significant other exhibited no significant association with psychological distress among the Malaysian sample, but these support systems demonstrated differential impacts on the Bhutanese sample. Higher support from significant other was associated with lower psychological

Strengthening health-care pathways for people with Down syndrome.

People with Down syndrome are living longer than ever before because of improved management of concomitant health conditions. However, they continue to experience health inequalities across the life course, and health systems remain poorly equipped to meet the evolving and complex needs of adults with Down syndrome. Fragmented services, diagnostic overshadowing, absence of reasonable adjustments, and insufficient professional training about disability undermine health access, quality, outcomes, and autonomy. Families and caregivers of people with Down syndrome often bear a high burden of care,

Essence of Support: A Phenomenological Study of Integrating Formal and Natural Supports to Enhance Quality of Life for Saudi Young Adults With Intellectual Disability.

BACKGROUND: Integrated supports are vital for quality of life, yet experiences in Saudi Arabia remain under-explored. This study explored how young adults with intellectual disability and their families navigate the integration of formal and natural support systems. METHODS: Using hermeneutic phenomenology, data were collected through initial and follow-up semi-structured interviews and two focus groups. The sample comprised 17 participants, including 10 young adults with intellectual disability living with their families and seven family members. RESULTS: Two main themes emerged: the critic

Analyzing the Job Demands-Control-Support Model in Work-Life Balance: A Study among Nurses in the European Context.

The balance of personal life with professional life is a topical issue that is increasingly worrisome due to globalization, the rapid introduction of new technologies into all areas of human life, the overlap between time between work and family, new organizational systems, and changes in the nature of work. This problem is accentuated by professions subjected to intense labor demands, as is the case of nurses. Adopting the Job Demand-Control-Support model, the main purpose of this research is to analyze how these factors lead to a greater or lesser degree of work-life balance. The research pr

Role of the physician in prehospital management of trauma: European perspective.

Advanced prehospital trauma life support is challenged as a whole. Formerly well-accepted basic principles for stabilizing vital functions of the severely injured patient like volume resuscitation, airway protection, and immobilization have been questioned. In prehospital management of trauma, the role of not only the physician but also the paramedic must be redefined. In the absence of evidence about the effectiveness of advanced trauma life support training for paramedic crews, the needs of trauma victims and capacities of emergency medical systems must be re-evaluated. Assessment of patient

Artificial intelligence-powered predictive tools to improve end-of-life decision-making: mini-review.

BACKGROUND: Uncertainty around a patient's prognosis at the end of life remains a major barrier to timely palliative-care involvement and alignment of treatments with patient goals. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools have recently emerged to provide structured mortality predictions and identify patients at risk of deterioration to support clinical decision-making. OBJECTIVE: This mini-review summarises recent literature evaluating AI-based prognostic and decision-support tools in end-of-life and palliative care, focusing on predictive accuracy, early implementation outcomes, communicati

Preventing falls: the use of machine learning for the prediction of future falls in individuals without history of fall.

Nowadays, it becomes of paramount societal importance to support many frail-prone groups in our society (elderly, patients with neurodegenerative diseases, etc.) to remain socially and physically active, maintain their quality of life, and avoid their loss of autonomy. Once older people enter the prefrail stage, they are already likely to experience falls whose consequences may accelerate the deterioration of their quality of life (injuries, fear of falling, reduction of physical activity). In that context, detecting frailty and high risk of fall at an early stage is the first line of defense

Conceptual modelling for life sciences based on systemist foundations.

BACKGROUND: All aspects of our society, including the life sciences, need a mechanism for people working within them to represent the concepts they employ to carry out their research. For the information systems being designed and developed to support researchers and scientists in conducting their work, conceptual models of the relevant domains are usually designed as both blueprints for a system being developed and as a means of communication between the designer and developer. Most conceptual modelling concepts are generic in the sense that they are applied with the same understanding across

Repeated exposure to trauma narratives and professional quality of life in palliative and end-of-life healthcare providers.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined how repeated exposure to trauma narratives influences professional quality of life, including burnout, secondary traumatic stress (STS), and compassion satisfaction (CS), among end-of-life healthcare providers. The moderating roles of resilience and both organizational and personal support were also tested. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was completed by 507 healthcare providers working in hospice, oncology, or other end-of-life settings. Participants completed validated self-report measures assessing exposure to trauma narratives (Vicarious Trauma Sc

Environmental Factors that Impact the Workplace Participation of Transition-Aged Young Adults with Brain-Based Disabilities: A Scoping Review.

Workplace participation of individuals with disabilities continues to be a challenge. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) places importance on the environment in explaining participation in different life domains, including work. A scoping review was conducted to investigate environmental facilitators and barriers relevant to workplace participation for transition-aged young adults aged 18-35 with brain-based disabilities. Studies published between 1995 and 2018 were screened by two reviewers. Findings were categorized into the ICF's environmental domai
