Optimizing Outcomes in Neck Lift Surgery.

BACKGROUND: In certain patients there is an imbalance between the volume of the anterior neck and the mandibular confines that requires reductional sculpting and repositioning of the hyoid to optimize neck-lifting procedures. OBJECTIVES: A quantitative volumetric analysis of the impact of the management of supraplatysmal and subplatysmal structures of the neck by comparing surgical specimens was performed to determine the impact of reduction on cervical contouring. METHODS: In 152 patients undergoing deep cervicoplasty, the frequency of modification of each surgical maneuver and the amount o…

The Minimal Access Cranial Suspension Lift.

The minimal access cranial suspension (MACS) facelift is a minimally invasive face and neck lift that uses the understanding of the changes in facial anatomy as it relates to facial aging. The MACS facelift uses a shorter incision with limited subcutaneous undermining. It achieves a resuspension of the underlying neck and midface soft tissues with the use of looped, purse-string sutures in the superficial musculoaponeurotic system and platysma. These attenuated structures are anchored to the deep temporal fascia. In the properly selected patient, the MACS facelift is an effective technique wit

Evidence-Based Medicine: Face Lift.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After studying this article, the participants should be able to: 1. Describe pertinent surgical anatomy relevant to safe and effective face-lifting techniques. 2. Identify key aspects of facial aging. 3. Incorporate risk-reduction strategies during preoperative assessment. 4. Tailor their approach to face lifting based on patient anatomy. 5. Identify and treat complications after face-lift surgery. 6. Incorporate use of valid patient outcomes assessment tools in their practice to facilitate standardized outcomes reporting in the face-lift literature. SUMMARY: Treating the…

The subperiosteal, drill hole, midface lift.

This article describes a surgical technique using drill holes through the inferior orbital rim and fixation with permanent sutures as a functional subperiosteal midface lift and compares it to other standard midface elevation techniques. This was a retrospective, comparative, non-randomized study. Charts of all patients undergoing midface elevation between 2009 and 2013 were reviewed. Pre- and post-operative photos were graded on a scale 0 to 3 with 0 representing normal lower lid position and lid/cheek junction and 3 representing the most severe malposition. Twenty-seven patients (35 sides) u

Hyo neck lift: Preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: The aim of neck lift is to recreate an acute cervicomandibular angle. Surgical neck rejuvenation typically is associated with posterosuperior traction on the platysma (PLA) with an anterior vertical PLA corset or a digastric corset. Medium-term instability can exist with these procedures. OBJECTIVES: A novel platysmaplasty technique called the hyo neck lift is described and its surgical efficacy is compared with those of previously described techniques. METHODS: Ten patients underwent hyo neck lift and were evaluated in a preliminary prospective study. Hyo neck lift involved hori

Botulinum toxin: A lift for chronic migraines.

Chronic migraines are a common condition among patients seen in primary care and management often is a challenge. Despite existing therapies to help manage this condition, many patients continue to experience undue stress and diminished quality of life secondary to pain. This article briefly reviews treatments for migraine and introduces the role of onabotulinumtoxin A (Botox A) in improving the management of chronic migraines.

Liftings and stresses for planar periodic frameworks.

We formulate and prove a periodic analog of Maxwell's theorem relating stressed planar frameworks and their liftings to polyhedral surfaces with spherical topology. We use our lifting theorem to prove deformation and rigidity-theoretic properties for planar periodic pseudo-triangulations, generalizing features known for their finite counterparts. These properties are then applied to questions originating in mathematical crystallography and materials science, concerning planar periodic auxetic structures and ultrarigid periodic frameworks.

Efficacy of LIFT for recurrent anal fistula.

AIM: Ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT) is a novel sphincter-preserving technique for anal fistula. This pilot study was designed to evaluate the results in patients with a recurrent fistula. METHOD: Seventeen patients [nine men; median age 49 (range, 30-76) years] with a recurrent trans-sphincteric fistula were treated with a LIFT procedure between June 2008 and February 2011. All were followed prospectively for a median of 16 (range, 5-27) weeks with clinical examination. Fifteen followed for 13.5 (range, 8-26) months by clinical examination also had three-dimensional (3D

Anatomic concepts for brow lift procedures.

BACKGROUND: Brow lifting became a component of the facialplasty procedure 45 years ago, and the original brow-lifting technique incorporating a coronal incision approach is still practiced by many surgeons today. Over the past 15 years, however, the endoscope-assisted procedure and the limited incision, nonendoscopic techniques have evolved as alternate procedures for brow lifting. The level of artistry in performing any brow lift technique is raised when the surgeon acquires knowledge of upper facial anatomy and integrates that knowledge into a working concept of the aging process of the uppe…

[Face lift--indications, contraindications and operation].

The face lift procedure is often performed in aesthetic plastic surgery. It corrects the stigmata of age, i.e. the multiple facial wrinkles and the sagging of the atrophic soft tissues by undermining and retensioning the superficial and deeper facial and cervical structures. Since the public can not fully appreciate the extent and the inconveniences involved with this operation, emphasis must be laid on an exact preoperative information of the patient with regards to possible complications, the pros and cons of this procedure and the results to be expected. In this paper the face lift operatio

Herpes zoster as a complication of a face lift.

A case of herpes zoster neuritis (shingles) is reported, closely following a face lift with adjunctive dermabrasion and chemical peel. The etiologic relationships are unclear. However, the mental nerve distribution suggests mechanical irritation of the nerve as a possible factor. Management of this complication is conservative. It is suggested that herpes zoster be included in the differential diagnosis of unusual alterations of sensation or persistent pain following procedures for facial aging.

SMAS Modifications in Subnasal Lip Lifting: Evaluation of 600 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Aging of the upper lip is characterized not only by volume loss but also by soft-tissue laxity, elongation of the cutaneous lip, and progressive deterioration of vermilion show. Skin-only subnasal lip lift techniques may inadequately address these structural changes and may be associated with unfavorable scarring when excessive tension is applied to the skin closure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes and safety of SMAS-based modifications in subnasal lip lifting, with specific emphasis on scar quality, lip eversion, and complication rates in a large patien…

Lifting the Concentration Limit of Mass Photometry by PEG Nanopatterning.

Mass photometry (MP) is a rapidly growing optical technique for label-free mass measurement of single biomolecules in solution. The underlying measurement principle provides numerous advantages over ensemble-based methods but has been limited to low analyte concentrations due to the need to uniquely and accurately quantify the binding of individual molecules to the measurement surface, which results in diffraction-limited spots. Here, we combine nanoparticle lithography with surface PEGylation to substantially lower surface binding, resulting in a 2 orders of magnitude improvement in the upper
