SATB2-associated syndrome in patients from Japan: Linguistic profiles.

Cleft palate can be classified as either syndromic or nonsyndromic. SATB2-associated syndrome is one example of a syndromic cleft palate that is accompanied by intellectual disability, and various dental anomalies. SATB2-associated syndrome can be caused by several different molecular mechanisms including intragenic mutations and deletions of SATB2. Here, we report two patients with SATB2 truncating mutations (p.Arg239* and p.Asp702Thrfs*38) and one with a 4.4 megabase deletion including the SATB2 locus. All three patients had cleft palate and other dysmorphic features including macrodontia wi

Dyslexia-related impairments in sequence learning predict linguistic abilities.

Dyslexia is often characterized by disordered word recognition and spelling, though dysfunction on various non-linguistic tasks suggests a more pervasive deficit may underlie reading and spelling abilities. The serial-order learning impairment in dyslexia (SOLID) hypothesis proposes that sequence learning impairments fundamentally disrupt cognitive abilities, including linguistic processes, among individuals with dyslexia; yet only some studies report sequence learning deficits in people with dyslexia relative to controls. Evidence may be mixed because traditional sequence learning tasks often

Effects of Linguistic Labels on Visual Attention in Children and Young Adults.

Effects of linguistic labels on learning outcomes are well-established; however, developmental research examining possible mechanisms underlying these effects have provided mixed results. We used a novel paradigm where 8-year-olds and adults were simultaneously trained on three sparse categories (categories with many irrelevant or unique features and a single rule defining feature). Category members were either associated with the same label, different labels, or no labels (silent baseline). Similar to infant paradigms, participants passively viewed individual exemplars and we examined fixatio

Dyspnoea-12: a translation and linguistic validation study in a Swedish setting.

BACKGROUND: Dyspnoea consists of multiple dimensions including the intensity, unpleasantness, sensory qualities and emotional responses which may differ between patient groups, settings and in relation to treatment. The Dyspnoea-12 is a validated and convenient instrument for multidimensional measurement in English. We aimed to take forward a Swedish version of the Dyspnoea-12. METHODS: The linguistic validation of the Dyspnoea-12 was performed (Mapi Language Services, Lyon, France). The standardised procedure involved forward and backward translations by three independent certified translato

Cognitive-linguistic deficits in euthymic elderly patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that bipolar disorder is also associated with neuropsychological impairments persisting during euthymia, thus representing a trait-like feature of the disease. Language and speech abnormalities are also present in bipolar disorder, especially in verbal fluency and verbal memory. However, there is a lack of studies in the literature investigating different levels of linguistic processing (phonological, syntactical, and semantic) in a single cohort of euthymic bipolar patients. Based on previous findings of pervasive language impairment in euthymic elderl

Proximal and distal. Rethinking linguistic form and use for clinical purposes.

With clinical purposes in mind, a review of the proximal/distal opposition is carried out in order to define a universal parameter of variability in semiotic procedures. By taking into consideration different-although notionally inter-related-senses of the proximal/distal opposition, a cluster of semiotic properties is proposed, which initially permits one to characterize dimensions of variability in the form and use of gestures. The subsequent and central aim of this paper is, however, to demonstrate that the same, or homologous, properties can also serve to characterize variability in the us

Cerebral reorganization as a function of linguistic recovery in children: An fMRI study.

Characterizing and mapping the relationship between neuronal reorganization and functional recovery are essential to the understanding of cerebral plasticity and the dynamic processes which occur following brain damage. The neuronal mechanisms underlying linguistic recovery following left hemisphere (LH) lesions are still unknown. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we investigated whether the extent of brain lateralization of linguistic functioning in specific regions of interest (ROIs) is correlated with the level of linguistic performance following recovery from acquired chi

Linguistic characteristics of individuals with high functioning autism and Asperger syndrome.

This study examined the linguistic characteristics of high functioning individuals with autism and Asperger syndrome. Each group consisted of 10 participants who were matched on sex, chronological age, and intelligence scores. Participants generated a narrative after watching a brief video segment of the Social Attribution Task video. Each participant was then asked 10 questions related to the stimulus video. The narrative samples and responses to the questions were analysed linguistically. Individuals with high functioning autism and Asperger syndrome performed similarly on most measures of l

Listening to patients: cultural and linguistic barriers to health care access.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Full access to medical care includes cultural and linguistic access as well as financial access. We sought to identify cultural and linguistic characteristics of low-income, ethnic minority patients' recent encounters with health care organizations that impede, and those that increase, health care access. METHODS: We conducted four focus groups with ethnically homogeneous African American, Latino, Native American, and Pacific Islander patients. Study participants were "walked" through the stages of a medical encounter and asked to identify physician and staff behavi

Challenging linguistic barriers to health care: students as medical interpreters.

Inadequate medical interpretation services are a barrier to the delivery of optimal health care to persons with limited English proficiency. Even though Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 requires that interpretation services be available to persons speaking limited English, many health care institutions are struggling to reach full compliance. Communication through untrained interpreters is likely to include mistranslations or omissions of physicians' questions, truncated or slanted patient responses, and inadequate information to facilitate accurate diagnosis and treatment. The Interpr

Linguistic impairment after right cerebellar stroke: a case report.

Increasing evidence suggests the involvement of the cerebellum in non-motor functions. We describe a patient who presented speech deficits after a right cerebellar infarction without other cognitive impairments. 99mTc-HMPAO single-photon emission computed tomography showed a marked hypoperfusion in the right cerebellar hemisphere, but did not show crossed cerebellar- cerebral diaschisis. The absence of neuroradiological evidence of structural supratentorial lesions supports the cerebellar role in modulating not only the motor system, but also higher order functions.

Contextual and linguistic correlates of intelligibility in children with developmental phonological disorders.

Listeners' glosses of children's intended words provided data for two studies of the potential influence of selected contextual and linguistic variables on word intelligibility. Several regularities associated with the occurrence of unintelligible words were identified. In Study I, intelligibility outcomes were associated with utterance length and fluency, word position, intelligibility of adjacent words, phonological complexity, and grammatical form. In Study II, intelligibility outcomes were associated with phonological complexity, syllabic structure, and grammatical form. Discussion conside

The continuum of linguistic dysfunction from pervasive developmental disorders to dyslexia.

This article examines speech and language impairment in relation to several common childhood psychiatric disorders. Similarities among disorders can be found in the associated language impairments, family histories, and certain language outcomes. The article describes prevalence surveys of speech and language disorders and the correlates of language impairment, such as IQ, socioeconomic status, and birth order. The association between language impairment and childhood psychiatric disorders (i.e., hyperactivity, autism) is investigated, and the outcomes of language impairment are discussed. Fin

Linguistic and articulatory aspects of single word production in apraxia of speech.

The errors of ten apraxic speakers on a single word task were analyzed to determine the effects of articulatory and linguistic variables on speech production. Results suggested that phoneme difficulty but not phoneme position or grammatical class significantly affected the errors of the subjects. A significant low positive correlation between mean word abstraction and the errors of the apraxic speakers was observed although correlations for the grammatical classes decreased with increases in abstraction. These findings were interpreted to suggest that impaired motor speech programming may be a

The linguistic situation on the Ukrainian Black Sea coast - Ukrainian, Russian and Suržyk as "native language", "primary code", frequently used codes and codes of linguistic socialization during childhood.

The study analyses the linguistic situation in the three Ukrainian oblasts on the Black Sea coast using survey data collected from 1,200 respondents before the Russian attack on Ukraine. At the end of the 18th century, this region was the core of a "new Russian" governate during Tsarist times. Previously, the region had been ruled by Tatars and there were neither Russian nor Ukrainian settlements. From the 19th century onwards, the Ukrainian and Russian population dominated. Since the annexation of the Crimea, these oblasts represent a crucial part of the Kremlin's plan to establish an "expand

The role of positive linguistic sentiment in extinction learning through exposure therapy.

Exposure therapy is derived from extinction learning principles. Evidence suggests that reward processes, including positive affect, may influence extinction learning. Few studies have explored the role of reward and positive affect in exposure. This study sought to address gaps by examining whether linguistic markers of positive affect expressed during exposure predicted learning and clinical outcomes. Adults (N = 47) with social anxiety or panic disorder completed nine sessions of exposure therapy. Participants rated expected likelihood of feared outcome occurrence before and after each expo

Combining Linguistic, Behavioral and Visuospatial Measures to Characterize Multidomain Impairment in Dementia.

Background/Objectives: Visuospatial impairments are among the earliest cognitive symptoms in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADRD), yet standard assessments often lack ecological validity and focus on isolated domains. This study examines whether integrating linguistic, behavioral, and eye-tracking measures provides a more comprehensive characterization of cognitive deficits within a multimodal, exploratory framework. Methods: Twenty older adults (10 with mild to moderate dementia, including AD/ADRD, and 10 age-matched controls) completed three tasks: (1) oral narrative product

Statistical analysis of interpretable linguistic features for MCI detection in bilingual speech.

INTRODUCTION: Early detection of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is critical for intervention and dementia prevention. Interpretable linguistic features may offer transparent, cross-linguistic markers yet remain underexplored in bilingual dataset contexts. METHODS: Using the TAUKADIAL Challenge dataset, which includes English and Chinese picture descriptions, we extracted 93 language-specific linguistic features with the Efficient Linguistic Feature Extraction for Natural Language Datasets (ELFEN) package and 141 language-agnostic linguistic features using the Comprehensive Handcrafted Lingui
