Ethiopia reports the third highest number of extrapulmonary TB cases globally, most of which are lymph node TB (TBLN). We investigated the performance of the available diagnostic tests for TBLN. Fine needle aspirate (FNA) and excision biopsy samples from affected lymph nodes were collected from 150 consenting patients with suspected TBLN visiting regional hospitals in Ethiopia. The sensitivity, specificity, positive (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of histopathology against culture as reference was 92%, 88%, 97% and 77% and of FNA cytology (FNAC) 76%, 88%, 100% and 55%, respectively.

BACKGROUND: Chronic cervicofacial lymphadenitis in children is often caused by nontuberculous mycobacterium or Bartonella henselae species (known as cat scratch disease).
METHODS: Bartonella henselae infection was diagnosed in 53 of 427 children with cervicofacial lymphadenopathy by polymerase chain reaction.

OBJECTIVE: To describe new cytologic clues to diagnose localized leishmania lymphadenitis (LLL).
STUDY DESIGN: The study examined cytologic smears of 170 cases of LLL referred to our department from November 1989 to October 2004. A total of 120 cases were confirmed by detecting Leishman-Donovan (LD) bodies in at least 1 of the cytologic smears and 50 cases, which were histologically confirmed. For comparison we studied cytologic smears of 20 cases of tuberculous lymphadenitis, 20 cases of toxoplasma lymphadenitis and 20 cases of granulomatous lymphadenitis of unspecified causes.

OBJECTIVE: Dermatopathic lymphadenitis (DL) can be a nonneoplastic cause of an enlarged lymph node or nodes. Cytologic findings of DL have not been well described. The differential diagnosis includes Langerhans histiocytosis (LH) in children and low grade lymphoma in adults. The authors analyze the results of therapy of 1288 patients with acute submaxillary lymphadenitis, discuss the causes of the development of this condition, and draw attention to the necessity of improving dental care of the population. Comparison of various treatment modalities has demonstrated a high efficacy of radical operation combined with physio- and hydroaeroionotherapy. The authors present their prediction for the duration of temporary invalidity periods because of this condition for the period of up to the year 2000 and the economic assessment of this prediction.
