Rectal endoscopic lymphoscintigraphy was performed in 10 control subjects and in a series of 85 patients with adenocarcinoma of the rectum as a prospective study to evaluate lymphatic drainage of the rectum and lymphatic spread in rectal cancer. Complete cranial drainage was demonstrated in all control subjects, and internal iliac nodes were also visible in 50 percent of cases. Results were correlated with histologic node examination in all patients operated upon for rectal cancer. Rectal endoscopic lymphoscintigraphy was assessed for sensitivity (85 percent), specificity (68 percent), overall

The preoperative evaluation of lymphatic spread in rectal cancer constitutes a problem of difficult solution. A prospective study including 45 patients operated for rectal cancer, has been carried out in order to evaluate the diagnostic value of a new technique: The endoscopic rectal lymphoscintigraphy. The results of preoperative assessment were compared with histological date according to Dukes' classification (Dukes A/B: 22 cases, Dukes C: 23 cases). Analysis of these results allowed to accurate sensitivity (80%), specificity (73%) and accuracy (80%) of this new technique. Combined to endor

Endoscopic lymphoscintigraphy was performed on 29 patients. In 15 of 29 cases, Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) was performed to observe the lymphatics of the cardia. The rate of detection of paraaortic lymph nodes by SPECT was 66.6%, and in particular the paraaortic lymph nodes in the upper portion of the left renal vein were detected at a rate of 58.3%. The ascending lymph flow from the cardia to the mediastinum could be depicted by SPECT. The SPECT images and the distribution of accumulation of Tc-99m Rhenium colloid into the regional lymph nodes indicated a similar tenden

Lymphoscintigraphy using 99mTcSb2S3 colloid was performed in 32 patients with malignant melanoma. Subcutaneous injections were made peritumorally in 20 patients and dorsopedally in 12 patients. Regional lymph node dissections were carried out on the following day in 16 patients and the resected lymph nodes were weighted, measured for radioactivity, and examined by light microscopy. Lymph flow to regional lymph nodes was shown in all but 2 patients. Twenty-nine of 239 lymph nodes contained metastases. Radioactivity was demonstrated in 17 of these nodes. In 5 of 11 patients with metastatic disea

Radionuclide lymphoscintigraphy utilising the bilateral subcostal introduction into the posterior rectus sheath of a small volume of radiocolloid of suitable particle size (99mTc antimony colloid) has provided scintigraphic images of diagnostic quality of the parasternal nodes in 2328 patients with malignant disease. An evaluation of the use of this technique in 1072 patients with breast carcinoma underlines the value of a procedure which, utilised routinely, should alter conventional staging criteria and provide a more rational basis for the management of patients with breast carcinoma and as

OBJECTIVES: Acquired lymphedema of upper extremity is a chronic pathologic status that frequently occurs after breast cancer treatment. Reliable and quantitative evaluation of lymphedema is crucial for successful management of patients. Although lymphoscintigraphy is the primary investigation for the confirmation and evaluation of lymphedema, the specific protocol of stress intervention is not well established. This study aims to introduce intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) as a part of stress lymphoscintigraphy and compare the effectiveness of conventional stress lymphoscintigraphy (CSL

After mastectomy and axillary node dissection, chylous leakage is rare. However, considerable anatomical variation in the termination of the thoracic duct has been reported. Hence, during breast surgery, injury to the lateral terminating branch is not unlikely and might lead to retrograde chyle leak. Herein, we describe a patient who had a chylous leakage at her wound site after a left simple mastectomy and axillary node dissection and for whom lymphoscintigraphy with Tc-99m albumin nanocolloid was performed. In this case, additional hybrid single-photon emission computed tomography/computed t

99Tcm-labelled autologous erythrocytes (approximately 2.0 ml and 2.0 mCi) were administered intraperitoneally (IP) to 15 patients with ovarian cancer. Anterior abdominal images were then collected for up to six hours to evaluate both the dynamics of intraperitoneal tracer distribution and the potential for visualizing internal mammary lymph nodes as correlated with the presence of diaphragmatic tumour. Results indicated that dispersion of red cells closely resembled that seen during IP contrast studies; the distribution patterns were heterogeneous, remained constant with time, and were intimat

Background: Lymphovenous anastomosis (LVA) is an effective treatment for restoring lymphatic function in patients with lymphedema. This study aimed to assess the predictive value of preoperative lymphoscintigraphy in female patients undergoing LVA for lower extremity lymphedema (LEL). Methods: Female patients with unilateral LEL who underwent preoperative lymphoscintigraphy followed by LVA were retrospectively examined. In the lymphoscintigraphy, the transport index (TI) was calculated based on five visual interpretation criteria: lymphatic transport kinetics, dermal backflow pattern, time to

We describe a 57-year-old man with prostate cancer. A radical prostatectomy with a pelvic lymphadenectomy was performed. After 2 years, a mild swelling of the lower extremities appeared, and the patient was referred for lower-limb lymphoscintigraphy. A lymphoscintigraphy of the superficial lymphatic system in the limbs showed prominent, dermal backflow in the area of the right hypogastrium. Lymphoscintigraphy of the deep lymphatic system showed reflux in the left hypogastrium. This discrepancy between the findings in the superficial and deep lower-limb lymphatic systems was explained by asymme

Chronic blockage of the lymphatic system due to functional or anatomical causes results in lymphoedema which results in swelling due to accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the soft tissue. Lymphoedema commonly affects the upper and lower limbs but may be seen in the neck, chest wall, abdomen and genitalia. Lymphoscintigraphy is non-invasive and maps the lymphatic channels thereby indicating location of blockage along the lymphatic pathways. Blockage of lymphatic channels may lead to back pressure resulting in dermal backflow. We present a case of dermal backflow in bilateral lymphoedema.

Postoperative chylothorax in patients with congenital heart diseases (CHD) results in poor outcomes if anatomical and functional abnormalities of the lymphatic system are present. While these abnormalities are typically diagnosed by intranodal lymphangiography and dynamic contrast magnetic resonance lymphangiography, the usefulness of lymphoscintigraphy in these patients has not been evaluated. Between January 2019 and December 2021, 28 lymphoscintigraphies were performed in our institution for investigating prolonged pleural effusion after cardiac surgery. The images were assessed by three bo

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the validity of quantitative lymphoscintigraphy as a useful lymphedema assessment tool for patients with breast cancer surgery including axillary lymph node dissection (ALND).
METHODS: We recruited 72 patients with lymphedema after breast cancer surgery that included ALND. Circumferences in their upper limbs were measured in five areas: 15 cm proximal to the lateral epicondyle (LE), the elbow, 10 cm distal to the LE, the wrist, and the metacarpophalangeal joint. Then, maximal circumference difference (MCD) was calculated by subtracting the unaffected side from the affec

UNLABELLED: Lymphoscintigraphy is an important part of the mapping and identification of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs). However, few studies report its reproducibility, and some concerns prevail. The aim of the study was to determine the reproducibility of lymphoscintigraphy performed by different team members following a strict protocol to assess lymphatic drainage and the location and number of SLNs.
METHODS: Sixty-eight melanoma patients were included. All underwent 2 separate lymphoscintigraphy studies, which followed the same acquisition protocol. Discordance was defined as a change in loc

The efficacy of lymphoscintigraphy and ultrasonography was evaluated in the detection of internal mammary lymph node (IMN) metastases in patients with breast cancer. On histological examination of IMN, 10 patients had metastases (positive group) and 47 did not (negative group). On lymphoscintigraphy, lack of uptake in the parasternal region of the affected side was classified as abnormal. The frequency of this abnormal finding was not significantly different between both groups. On sonography, the thickness of the sonolucent internal mammary area was measured. The thickness of the affected sid

Edema of the lower extremities is a difficult clinical problem. It can be due to stasis, obstruction of the lymphatic channels, increased production of lymph beyond the drainage capacity of the lymphatic vessels. It is often difficult to differentiate between these varieties. Lymphoscintigraphy was performed on 164 patients complaining of swelling of the lower extremities and on 5 volunteers. All patients were injected with 1 mCi of Tc-99m human serum albumin (HSA) intradermally in the medial web of the dorsum of each foot. Data were acquired dynamically for both inguinal regions for 45 minute

PURPOSE: Ovarian cancer in the early stage requires a complete surgical staging, including radical lymphadenectomy, implying subsequent risk of morbidity and complications. Sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping is a procedure that attempts to reduce radical lymphadenectomy-related complications and morbidities. Our study evaluates the feasibility of SLN mapping in patients with ovarian tumors by the use of intraoperative Technetium-99m-Phytate (Tc-99m-Phytate) and postoperative lymphoscintigraphy using tomographic (single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT)) acquisit
