A device profile on the MAGiC ablation catheter for treatment of cardiac arrhythmia.

INTRODUCTION: Catheter ablation is standard of care for cardiac arrhythmias, but conventional catheters are still limited by single-plane steering, variable tissue contact, and high irrigation demands, particularly in complex anatomy. Robotic magnetic navigation (RMN) addresses several of these constraints, but it has long depended on a first-generation radiofrequency catheter. AREAS COVERED: This device profile reviews the design, mechanism of action, available clinical evidence, regulatory status and future development of the MAGiC magnetic ablation catheter, the first purpose-built cathete…

Acute kidney injury and nephrotic syndrome caused by a "magic pill".

INTRODUCTION: The sudden onset of nephrotic syndrome (NS) and acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) seems to be an uncommon but distinct nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-related renal syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: We present such a case in a patient who took a "magic pill" for gout. Renal biopsy revealed minimal change disease (MCD), acute interstitial nephritis (AIN), severe acute tubular injury (ATI), and IgA nephropathy (IgAN). He was treated with an aborted course of high-dose prednisone, with complete resolution of his renal diseases. The pathologic finding of the combination of M…

The magic mirror: a novel intraoperative monitoring method for parathyroid glands.

The accurate detection of parathyroid glands (PGs) during surgery is of great significance in thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy, which pro … duce the occurrence of transient hypoparathyroidism after surgery. The NIRAF imaging system, like a magic mirror, can monitor the PGs during surgery in real time, thus providing great support for surgeries. In addition, the NIRAF imaging system can evaluate the blood supply of PGs by utilizing indocyanine green (ICG) to guide surgical strategies. The NI …

Measles, magic and misidentifications: a defence of the two-factor theory of delusions.

Corlett (Corlett, P. (this issue). Factor one, familiarity and frontal cortex: A challenge to the two-factor theory of delusions. Cognitive Neuropsychiatry) provides a robust critique of the two-factor theory of delusions. The heart of his critique is two challenges he derives from a paper by Tranel and Damasio (Tranel, D., & Damasio, H. (1994). Neuroanatomical correlates of electrodermal skin conductance responses. Psychophysiology, 31(5), 427-438), who illuminate the autonomic responses and brain damage of four patients often cited in support of the two-factor theory of Capgras delusion. I d

Novel approaches to comba … or), are available but cannot be used in children. At this stage, we are unable to identify a single magic bullet against malaria. Future studies should focus on effective single-dose molecules that can act against all stages of malaria in order to prevent transmission. Newer medicines have also raised concerns in terms of efficacy and safety. Overall, m …

Visualization of DAS28, SDAI, and CDAI: the magic carpets of rheumatoid arthritis.

There has been continuous debate regarding the applicability of various composite measures for the assessment of disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In order to further dissect this issue, we numerically and graphically modeled 28-joint disease activity scale (DAS28), simplified disease activity index (SDAI), and clinical disease activity index (CDAI) by three-dimensional (3D) plotting. We wished to graphically visualize the relative contribution of various elements in the three activity indices to each other. We calculated DAS28 (3 variables), SDAI, and CDAI by the standard equatio

Magic trick: a behavioural strategy for the management of strong-willed children.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of using a magic trick to persuade strong-willed children who refuse to sit in the dental chair at the first visit with more conventional methods like tell-show-do (TSD). METHODS: Seventy children aged 3-6 years of age who were identified as manifesting strong-willed behaviour were selected for this study. The children were randomly assigned to be managed either by a magic trick distraction or by TSD. There were 35 subjects in each group. The following variables were recorded for each child: time from the beginning of the s…

[Clinical application of several Taoist magical pellets in the Tang Dynasty.].

Alchemy is one the arts of Taoist practice. Clinical application of arsenics, mercury, lead, and alloys brought out by alchemy is the primal effect on TCM clinic in the Tang Dynasty. Their chemical compounds such as arsenides, realgar, silver mercuric alloys, mercuric chlorides, all played an important role in TCM clinical practice in the Tang Dynasty, exerting effects on later ages until today.

Colonial psychiatry, magic and religion. The case of mesmerism in British India.

This article is concerned with the development of early nineteenth-century Western medicine and psychiatry in relation to religion and magic during British colonial rule in India. The case of mesmerism is taken to illustrate that 'colonial medicine/psychiatry in India' itself was plural in nature, being made up of a variety of different, at times competing, strands. Religious connotations and references to spiritual enlightenment increasingly posed a peculiar problem to emerging Western science-based medicine in the nineteenth century. Mesmerism was met with as much hostility by an emerging We…

Modality-AGnostic image Cascade (MAGIC) for multi-modality cardiac substructure segmentation.

PURPOSE: Cardiac substructure delineation is emerging in treatment planning to minimize the risk of radiation-induced heart disease. Deep learning offers efficient methods to reduce contouring burden but currently lacks generalizability across different modalities and overlapping structures. This work introduces and validates a Modality-AGnostic Image Cascade (MAGIC) deep-learning pipeline for comprehensive and multi-modal cardiac substructure segmentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MAGIC is implemented through replicated encoding and decoding branches of an nnU-Net backbone to handle multi-moda…

Enhanced Electronic g-Factors in Magic Number Main Group Bimetallic Nanoclusters.

We report the observation of large electronic g-factors in magic number main group bimetallic nanoclusters by performing Stern-Gerlach deflection experiments at 10 K. The clusters AlPb12 and InPb12 exhibit values of g = 3.5-4.0, whereas GaPb12 clusters surprisingly reveal a value of g < 2.0. Multireference ab initio methods are applied to unmask the origin of the g-factors and to gain insight into the electronic structure. The interplay of the pyritohedral molecular symmetry, a particularly strong spin-orbit coupling involved in the ground state, and the presence of low-lying degenerate excite…

Orbeez: the magic water absorbing bead--risk of pediatric bowel obstruction?

OBJECTIVES: In December 2012, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled the water-absorbing toy WaterBalz after reports of small intestine obstruction after ingestion by children. Orbeez, another water-absorbing bead, remains available and is marketed as a children's toy. We sought to determine the extent to which Orbeez enlarge in various liquid media and the potential risk for bowel obstruction. METHODS: Three Orbeez beads were added to 210 mL of the following liquid media: room temperature tap water, whole milk, simulated gastric fluid, GoLytely (polyethelyelene glycol, 3350 and

From magic to science: a journey throughout Latin American medical mycology.

The start of Latin America's love story with fungi may be placed in pre-Hispanic times when the use of fungi in both ritual ceremonies and daily life were common to the native civilizations. But the medical mycology discipline in Latin America started at the end of the 19th Century. At that time, scholars such as A. Posadas, R. Seeber, A. Lutz and P. Almeida, discovered agents of fungal diseases, the study of which has influenced the regional research ever since. Heirs to them are the researchers that today thrive in regional Universities and Research Institutes. Two current initiatives improv

Thermally Reversible Transformation between Two Isomers of Silver Sulfide Magic-Size Clusters.

Isomers of semiconductor magic-size clusters (MSCs) share the same molecular formula but can exhibit distinct optical and electronic properties. Most of the reported MSC isomers have been so far limited to cadmium chalcogenides. Herein, we report the reversible transformation between two Ag2S MSC isomers synthesized in solution under mild reaction conditions. These MSC isomers, which we denote as MSC-356 and MSC-306 according to their characteristic excitonic peaks in their absorption spectra (356 and 306 nm, respectively), share the same inorganic core and organic ligand shell composition con…
