The cardiovascular risk increases with decreasing serum levels of magnesium, and this already at concentrations within the previous reference range (0.70-1.10 mmol/L). For this reason, the Society for Magnesium Research has updated its 1986 recommendations for the diagnosis of magnesium deficiency. The diagnosis is based on the patient's history, his clinical symptoms, and the results of clinical-chemical investigations of plasma/serum and urine. Further diagnostic methods used include the determination of ionized serum magnesium and the magnesium retention test. The optimal serum magnesium co…

A group of 11 young albino rats was fed with a Mg2+ free diet. After a few days, the animals showed typical signs of Mg2+ deficiency, consisting in skin vasodilation, red conjunctiva and hair loss. Pentylenetetrazol (50 mg/kg i.p.) injected in these rats, 6 and 12 days after the beginning of the diet, elicited a more severe convulsive activity compared with that shown by a control group of 12 rats. These results suggest that a Mg2+ deficiency, though not necessarily responsible for the convulsive activity, may contribute to facilitate an epileptic episode or may lead to more severe convulsions

Pregnant rats were fed diets with an Mg2+ content of 40, 12, 6 and 3 mmol/kg from day 10-19 of pregnancy. There was a linear correlation of non-protein bound Mg2+ between foetal and maternal serum, between amniotic fluid and maternal serum, and between foetal serum and amniotic fluid, the ratios being 2.7, 2.0 and 1.3 respectively, indicating active transport of Mg2+ up to a constant concentration gradient by the placenta. In hearts, increases of Na+ and Ca2+, and decreases of Mg2+ and K+ were observed only in the group receiving the lowest Mg2+ supply. After i.v. injection of MgCl2 to pregnan

Lipid and protein peroxidations were investigated in female patients with magnesium deficit (MD), fibromyalgia (FM) and age matched controls: malondialdehyde and protein carbonyls (PC), as well as serum, leucocyte and erythrocyte magnesium (EMg) were assessed in 20 controls, 25 FM and 16 MD patients. MDA are unchanged in MD and FM. PC are significantly increased (P < 0.01) in FM. EMg is significantly decreased in MD. There is a slight, but not significant, negative correlation between PC and EMg, in controls and MD. Protein peroxidations are demonstrated in FM. Further studies are needed in MD

Magnesium is an essential cation, involved in many enzymatic reactions, as a cofactor to adenosine triphosphatases. It is critical in energy … These include loop and thiazide diuretics, aminoglycosides, cisplatin, pentamidine, and foscarnet. Magnesium deficiency is seen frequently in alcoholics and diabetic patients, in whom a combination of factors contributes to its pathogenesis. Hypomagnesemia is known to produce a wide variety of clinical presentations, including neuromuscular irritability, cardiac arrh …

In 19 patients receiving a cytostatic therapy with epirubicine and cisplatinum, 31 times in total the renal loss of magnesium was determined using the colorimetric xylidile-blue-method. 16 patients, whose magnesium input postoperatively was equally well known, served as a control. In all these patients a negative magnesium balance could be demonstrated being significantly higher (p less than 0.01) in those receiving cytostatic therapy.

Magnesium deficiency may complicate many diseases. The causes include the following: inadequate intake during starvation or increased requirement during early childhood, pregnancy, or lactation; excessive losses of magnesium as a result of malabsorption from the gastrointestinal tract or from the kidneys during use of diuretics; and to a combination of the two, as in alcoholism. Most often the etiological factors have been operative for a month or more. Acute hypomagnesemia can occur without previous Mg deficiency after epinephrine, cold stress and stress of serious injury or extensive surgery…

Immediately following 4 h of continuous exercise at +/- 45% Vo2max in heat, a 23-year-old, well-trained man displayed epileptic-type convulsions. One week preceeding this incident, he completed an identical work test successfully under room temperature conditions. An assessment of his physiological and biochemical results indicated only one abnormality: during exercise in heat, an abnormally low serum magnesium concentration prevailed for most of the test. Treatment with phenobarb and magnesium chloride enteric tablets ("Slow Mag", 2 x 535 mg/d) reversed the biochemical abnormality. After chec

Four patients with gastrointestinal disorders, and one patient with chronic alcoholism presented with both hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia. Pharmacological doses of either ergocalciferol or dihydrotachysterol did not correct the hypocalcemia except in one patient who had a minimal rise in serum calcium. Parathormone levels were high in three patients and exogenous parathormone given to the fourth subject failed to elicit a rise in serum calcium, implying impairment of the calcemic response to parathormone. Magnesium repletion simultaneously corrected the hypomagnesemia and hypocalcemia. Balanc

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D and magnesium (Mg) are some of the most studied topics in medicine with enormous implications for human health and dis … on has become a common practice, but Mg deficiency still remains unaddressed. Screening for chronic magnesium deficiency is difficult because a normal serum level may still be associated with moderate to severe deficiency. To date, there is no simple and accurate laboratory test to determine the total body magnesium status in humans. Mg is essential in the metabolism …
