Doctors, ethics and special education.

This discussion paper is drawn from a qualitative research project comparing the effect of special and ordinary schools on the lives of children, young people and their families. Special schools are recommended by health professionals who seldom know how ineffective these schools are. We question the beneficence and justice of health professionals' advice on education for children with disabilities and other difficulties. Cooperation with local education authorities (LEAs) plays a considerable part in the work of community paediatricians, clinical medical officers, therapists and other health

Effect of electric heating and ice added to the bowl on mainstream waterpipe semivolatile furan and other toxicant yields.

OBJECTIVES: We examined mainstream total particulate matter, nicotine, cotinine, menthol, pyrene, carbon monoxide (CO) and semivolatile furan yields from a commercial waterpipe with two methods for heating the tobacco, quick-light charcoal (charcoal) and electric head (electric) and two water bowl preparations: with (ice) and without ice (water). METHODS: Emissions from a single brand of popular waterpipe tobacco (10 g) were generated using machine smoking according to a two-stage puffing regimen developed from human puffing topography. Tobacco and charcoal consumption were calculated for eac

School adjustment of adolescents with sequential bilateral cochlear implants in mainstream school.

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the school adjustment of adolescents with sequential bilateral cochlear implants (CIs) in mainstream educational settings. This study aims to investigate the school adjustment of adolescents with sequential bilateral CIs, in comparison to those of age-matched adolescents with typical hearing (TH), to explore the relationships between individual variables and school adjustment in the bilateral CI group, and to assess the factors leading to strong school adjustment in the bilateral CI group. METHODS: Twenty-five adolescents with sequential bilateral CIs and 30

Noncontingent escape as treatment for self-injurious behavior maintained by negative reinforcement.

We extended research on the role of noncontingent positive reinforcement following a functional analysis of attention-maintained self-injurious behavior to self-injury maintained by negative reinforcement in 2 young males with developmental disabilities. During a pretreatment functional analysis, each participant's self-injury was shown to be differentially sensitive to escape from instructional activities as negative reinforcement. During noncontingent escape, escape from learning activities was provided on a fixed-time schedule that was not influenced by the participant's behavior. One parti

A model of educational resource use by children with cochlear implants.

We have tracked patterns of use of educational and rehabilitative resources as part of an initial assessment of cost-benefit ratios of cochlear implants in children. Forty-two children with cochlear implants in the Listening Center at Johns Hopkins program of aural rehabilitation have served as our study cohort to develop the measures to be assessed. An educational resource matrix stratifies school setting (residential vs special education vs non-specialized "mainstream" setting) and levels of rehabilitative support (speech and language therapy and interpreter use) to map past and current use

Education and employment prospects in cerebral palsy.

Parents and paediatric neurologists need information on the long-term social prognosis of children with cerebral palsy (CP). No large population-based study has been performed on this topic. On 31 December 1999, to find predictors in childhood of subsequent education and employment, 819 participants with CP born between 1965 and 1978 (471 males; mean age 28y 10 mo, SD 4y, range 21 to 35y) in the Danish Cerebral Palsy Registry were compared with 4406 controls without CP born between 1965 and 1978 (2546 males; mean age 28y 10 mo, SD 4y, range 21 to 35y). Diagnostic subtypes of the 819 participan

Imagery and physical practice in the acquisition of gross motor timing of coincidence by adolescents with mild mental retardation.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of imagery practice in conjunction with physical practice on the performance of anticipating a coincidence (striking) by adolescents with mild mental retardation. 32 adolescents were randomly assigned to either a physical practice plus imagery practice group or a physical practice only group. Subjects in the physical practice plus imagery practice group were asked to image the task before physically performing it, while subjects in the physical practice only group did not image the task. Subjects performed 20 trials per day for five consecuti

Exploring Teachers' Challenges in Teaching Reading to d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in Classrooms.

Students who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing (d/Dhh) continue to face persistent literacy challenges, particularly in contexts where early language access and instructional resources are limited. In Saudi Arabia, despite inclusive education reforms, barriers to reading achievement remain. This study explored the instructional challenges teachers encounter and the strategies they employ when teaching reading to d/Dhh learners, drawing on the qualitative similarity hypothesis (QSH), which posits that d/Dhh students require access to the same core literacy components as their hearing peers, and the

Enhancing quality of life for individuals with disabilities in Saudi Arabia: Teachers' perspectives on the role of leadership in inclusive education.

BACKGROUND: Inclusive education is pivotal to enhancing the quality of life of individuals with disabilities by ensuring equal access to educational opportunities, fostering social inclusion, and providing necessary support and resources. Successful implementation depends on a range of systemic factors, such as policy, resources, teacher training, and leadership. AIMS: The goals of the study were to obtain insights from elementary school teachers on the role of school leaders in implementing IE and to identify the challenges these teachers identify to successful IE implementation. METHODS AN

The Childhood Asperger Syndrome Test (CAST): test-retest reliability.

The Childhood Asperger Syndrome Test (CAST) is a 37-item parental self-completion questionnaire to screen for autism spectrum conditions in research. Good test accuracy was demonstrated in studies with primary school aged children in mainstream schools. The aim of this study was to investigate the test-retest reliability of the CAST. Parents of 1000 children in years 1-6 in five mainstream primary schools in Cambridgeshire received the CAST. A second identical questionnaire was posted to respondents after approximately 2 weeks. Both mailings generated 136 responses. Agreement above and below a

Having friends and Rett syndrome: how social relationships create meaningful contexts for limited skills.

PURPOSE: The experiences of a teenage girl with Rett syndrome who was being educated in an inclusive middle school are described to provide a better understanding of how social relationships create meaningful contexts for individuals with limited skills. The case example is used to illustrate the principle that contexts (including expectancies, acceptance, philosophical principles) can be designed to support meaningful social relationships, despite social and intellectual disabilities. METHOD: Naturalistic observations of social interactions over a two year period are reported to illustrate t

What does the French public think about inclusive education?

BACKGROUND: To explain that students with intellectual disabilities are not fully included in mainstream education, the present paper investigates public attitudes towards inclusive education and notably examines how these vary according to students' type of disability (i.e., an intellectual, a communicational, a sensory, a motor, or a specific learning one). METHOD: Data were extracted from an opinion poll on inclusive education conducted on a representative sample of the French population (N = 1001). RESULTS: The analyses indicated that the public are less favourably inclined towards the i

A developmental and sequenced one-to-one educational intervention (DS1-EI) for autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability: A three-year randomized, single-blind controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID) are an understudied population whose school inclusion is challenging. METHODS: We assessed the effects of "Developmental and Sequenced one-to-one Educational Intervention" (DS1-EI), a ten-hour-per-week adapted instruction programme for five- to nine-year-old children with ASD and ID treated in outpatient health care institutions. A single-blind multisite randomized controlled trial was conducted to compare DS1-EI given for three years with treatment as usual (TAU)(trial registration numbers: ANSM130282B-

Student experiences of neurodiversity in higher education: insights from the BRAINHE project.

The number of students with identified learning differences (LDs) of all kinds is increasing in higher education. This qualitative study explored the experiences of 27 current and previous students with a range of specific LDs by means of semi-structured interviews, using a thematic approach. The findings revealed that participants shared many life experiences and preferences for learning irrespective of their type of LD. Participants generally held one of two views about their identity as 'neurodiverse': a 'difference' view--where neurodiversity was seen as a difference incorporating a set of

The differential and temporal effects of antecedent exercise on the self-stimulatory behavior of a child with autism.

The effects of two levels of exercise (walking versus jogging) in suppressing the self-stimulatory behavior of a five-year-old boy with autism were examined. The exercise conditions were applied immediately before periods of academic programming. Maladaptive self-stimulatory behaviors were separately tracked, enabling identification of behaviors that were more susceptible to change (e.g., physical self-stimulation and "out of seat" behavior) versus those that were more resistant (e.g., visual self-stimulation). Examination of temporal effects indicated a decrease in physical self-stimulation a

Teachers' readiness for sustainable inclusive practices for supporting deaf learners: A cross-sectional study of psychological and contextual dimensions in northern Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Empirical evidence regarding the psychological and contextual dimensions of schoolteachers' preparedness to support the inclusion of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students in mainstream school settings is essential for effective policymaking. Therefore, the present study assessed schoolteachers' knowledge, attitudes, and self-perceived barriers to the inclusion of DHH students in mainstream classrooms. METHODS: This analytical cross-sectional study surveyed schoolteachers across different educational levels and settings in the Aljouf region of Saudi Arabia using a

Reforming medical training for psychiatry of intellectual disability: from margins to mandate.

In its 2025 medical training review, National Health Service (NHS) England highlighted the urgent need to modernise postgraduate medical education in England to meet NHS population needs while supporting doctors' professional aspirations. The psychiatry of intellectual disability, a subspecialty marked by declining recruitment, uneven service provision and limited research capacity, provides a critical test case for these reforms. This article applies the 11 recommendations from the review to doctors training in this subspecialty. Drawing on recent evidence, it advocates for equitable, flexibl

An Exploration of Nursing Roles in Hereditary Colorectal Cancer- A Narrative Literature Review.

OBJECTIVES: Hereditary colorectal cancer (CRC) syndromes, including Lynch syndrome and the adenomatous and hamartomatous polyposis conditions, account for up to 10% of CRC cases. Advances in molecular diagnostics and tumor-based testing have improved identification, yet access to genetic testing and lifelong surveillance remains inconsistent worldwide. This narrative review examines the evolving role of nurses in identifying, managing, and supporting individuals and families affected by hereditary CRC. METHODS: A narrative synthesis of international literature, clinical guidelines, and exampl

'I'm not just being difficult . . . I'm finding it difficult': A qualitative approach to understanding experiences of autistic parents when interacting with statutory services regarding their autistic child.

Becoming a parent is an important part of adult life for many people, including autistic people. Many parents of autistic children can find getting the right support for their children difficult. Knowledge is currently poor about how this is experienced by parents who are also autistic themselves. The main researcher is also an autistic parent to an autistic child and other experts by experience were consulted in the development of the study. Ten autistic mothers with autistic children in mainstream education were interviewed about their experiences of seeking support for their autistic childr
