Primary systemic amyloidosis: a cause of malabsorption syndrome.

PURPOSE: Although malabsorption syndrome is encountered frequently by general internists and gastroenterologists and is common to various underlying disease processes, primary amyloidosis is often overlooked during medical evaluation. We describe the diagnosis, natural history, and laboratory features of a subgroup of patients with primary amyloidosis who presented predominantly with gastrointestinal symptoms and with evidence of a malabsorption syndrome. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We reviewed all patients diagnosed with amyloidosis and malabsorption syndrome who had been seen at the Mayo Clinic f

Spectrum of malabsorption syndrome in north Indian children.

AIMS: To know the spectrum of malabsorption syndrome (MAS) in infants and children and highlight agewise differences in etiology in different age groups. METHODS: 137 children presenting with diarrhea of more than 3 weeks' duration and/or growth failure and abnormality of one of more tests of malabsorption were studied. Etiology of MAS was determined using investigations specific for each of the causes. RESULTS: Sixty two (45%) children were below 2 years of age and 75 (55%) above. Common causes of MAS were: protracted diarrhea 45 (33%), celiac disease 35 (26%), parasitic infestations 13 (9%

[Bone changes in the course of a gastrointestinal malabsorption syndrome].

The radiological appearance of osseous manifestations in intestinal malabsorption syndromes is described. In our opinion it is possible to eliminate several of the possible clinical differential diagnosis by analysing the bone structure. The results are compared with the literature.

[Changes in the nervous system in children with malabsorption syndrome].

Results of clinical and laboratory dynamic examination of the nervous system in 95 children with intestinal malabsorption are reviewed. The basic neurological syndromes accompanying this ailment are specified. These are: an astheno-neurotic and neurosis-like; a hypertensive-hydrocephalic; a syndrome of motor disturbances (with the secondary neuromuscular syndrome being the leading in its structure); a syndrome of visceral dysfunctions; a convulsive syndrome and a syndrome of retardation of the age, speech, and psychomotor development. A dependence of the neurological disturbances on the form a

THE ROLE OF THE UPPER GASTROINTESTINAL FLORA IN THE MALABSORPTION SYNDROME.

Bacterial contamination of the upper gastrointestinal tract by colonic flora appears important in the production of some forms of secondary steatorrhea. Gastric contents have been studied in patients with normal intestinal absorption and with malabsorption syndrome. In secondary steatorrhea there is a significantly increased incidence of gastric contamination by colon organisms, and this is usually associated with absence of free hydrochloric acid. It seems probable that such contamination interferes with intestinal digestion and absorption. The benefit resulting from the oral administration o

Carcinoid syndrome misdiagnosed as a malabsorptive syndrome after biliopancreatic diversion.

A case is reported of a woman who developed untreatable diarrhea after a prior biliopancreatic diversion (BPD), attributed to the malabsorptive component. Abdominal ultrasound incidentally found focal liver lesions. On fine needle aspiration biopsy, atypia was found, and these hepatic lesions were resected with free margins. The specimen showed liver metastases of an aggressive malignant neuroendocrine neoplasm. The primary site was subsequently identified to be in the pancreas. The physician and surgeon must realize that non-related diseases can develop after bariatric surgery, as in the gene

[Clinical and biological syndrome of intestinal malabsorption: diagnostic tests].

Malabsorption has miscellaneous clinical and biological presentations. They may vary according to the site of the absorption abnormality (luminal, parietal, vascular transport), its type and severity. The problem of the physician is to become alerted to the possibility of malabsorption in patients who present with signs and symptoms which may be the concern of almost any specialist beside gastroenterologists. Patient history, type of signs and symptoms, physical examination and simple biochemical and haematological parameters may be of major interest in this regard and will help in the choice

The clinical relevance of lactose malabsorption in irritable bowel syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of lactose malabsorption (LM) in the Caucasian population of northern Europe is estimated to be low. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a very common diagnosis, and its symptoms are nearly identical to those of LM. Therefore we investigated the prevalence of LM among IBS patients in comparison with healthy volunteers. DESIGN: A double-blind clinical trial compared with healthy controls. SETTING: One out-patient gastroenterology clinic in the Netherlands. PATIENTS: 70 Caucasian IBS patients and 35 healthy volunteers (staff members). METHODS: All 105 underwent hydrog
