Acceptability of multiple micronutrient supplements by pregnant and lactating women in Mali.

BACKGROUND: In Mali, an estimated 73% of pregnant women are anaemic largely due to iron deficiency. National policy recommends women to take iron and folic acid supplements daily from first prenatal contact until 3 months postpartum. However, many pregnant women in Mali could benefit from multiple micronutrient supplements. OBJECTIVE: To assess pregnant women's acceptability of and adherence to a daily multiple micronutrient supplementation scheme compared with the current daily iron and folic acid supplementation scheme. DESIGN: Seventy pregnant women were allocated to either the daily mult…

[A Dutchman from Mali with a perianal ulcer caused by cutaneous amoebiasis].

A 66-year-old Dutchman, living in Mali, presented with an extensive progressive perianal ulcer despite local and antibiotic treatment. Microscopic examination of the stool revealed Entamoeba histolytica/dispar cysts and phagocytosing trophozoites were seen in fresh scrapings of the ulcer, a diagnostic feature of infection with E. histolytica. The diagnosis was cutaneous amoebiasis and the patient was effectively treated with metronidazole and local debridements. Primary cutaneous amoebiasis is a rare disease. Diagnosis and treatment are relatively simple but lack of familiarity with the diseas…

Endemic cretinism in a traditional society in Mali: from the collectivity to the individual.

The prevalence of endemic cretinism was measured in a village belonging to the Bwa ethnic group in Mali liable to iodine deficiency and suffering from endemic goitre. In this village according to mental and motor handicaps found in cretinism, we used two psychometric tests: the Raven's Progressive Matrice (PM 47) and a "peg test". Using the fiduciary inference method on the two tests associated with a clinical and qualitative approach, we obtained a prevalence of myxedematous cretinism close to 1.2%.

[Leprosy as a cause of physical disability in rural and urban areas of Mali].

We performed a cross-sectional study of populations from two areas of Mali, in May and June 1996. The aim of the study was to assess the extent to which leprosy causes physical disability in Mali. One area was rural (Circle of Bougouni), the other urban (Bamako District). We used a cluster sampling method, with 500 households selected for study in each of the two areas. All members of the households randomly selected were included in the study. For all survey sites, the number of households was proportional to the number of inhabitants. The total study population was 8,175, including 172 cases…

Two major snails species which are the intermediate hosts of urine schistosomiasis in Mali (Bulinus truncatus and Bulinus globosus) were found in the shelters: however, B. truncatus was only infected in 13.1% (19/145). Contamination was local and "ruralization" activities (particularly gardening) seemed to be the most important displaying …

In a cohort of 53 children examined by CIC pre- and post-harvest (June and December), abnormal CIC were seen in 77.4% and 54.7%, respectively (P = 0.04). Subclinical vitamin A deficiency is a problem in this area. A seasonal variation is demonstrated. CIC is a useful method for identifying communities with subclinical vitamin A deficiency. First Molecular Characterization of Chronic Hepatitis B Carriers in Timbuktu, Mali.

In Mali, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third and sixth most common cancer in men and women, respectively. Mali comprises several distinct climato-ecological zones. Most studies to date have been conducted in the sub-Sahelian zone of southern Mali, including the capital city Bamako. In this part of the country, the main risk factors for HCC are chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) carriage and dietary exposure to aflatoxins, a well-known hepatocarcinogen. Data are scarce for other ecological zones, but our preliminary data from 721 blood donors in the area of Timbuktu, presented in this stud…
