Central intraosseous adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the mandible, formerly known as cylindroma, is a rare neoplasm with only 16 cases reported in the literature. We describe the diagnosis, etiology, and treatment of a central ACC located in the mandibular premolar region. We also review the literature. This case illustrates 2 key facts regarding the diagnosis and etiology of ACC. First, central salivary gland tumors should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cystic lytic lesions in the mandible. Second, even though the origin of this type of tumor is still unknown, the presence o

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KH) is an endothelial-derived spindle cell neoplasm often associated with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome. Most cases arise in infancy and childhood and are soft-tissue tumors. The tumor displays an appearance between capillary hemangioma and Kaposi's sarcoma. We report a case of KH in a 1-year-old girl involving a mass that showed abnormal enhancement of soft tissue superficial to the right temporal bone with partial destruction of the temporal bone, the temporomandibular joint, mandibular condyle, and occipital bone. The physical finding of a discolored mass led cl

Numb chin syndrome is a rare cranial neuropathy. Knowledge of potential cancers that involve the mental nerve is mandatory, since it may lead in many cases to discovery of a neoplasia or to its recurrence. We describe a 55-year-old patient who complained for several days of numbness in the right side of his chin. No dental cause was found. What was found was an undiagnosed pulmonary carcinoma in metastasis. This possibility should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

Juvenile trabecular ossifying fibroma (JTOF) is a rare, aggressive neoplasm primarily affecting children. The purpose of this case report is to describe an extensive mandibular JTOF in a 10-year-old girl who presented with facial pain and swelling. Radiographic imaging revealed a large, well-defined radiolucency with cortical perforation. Histo- pathological examination confirmed JTOF, characterized by cellular fibroblastic tissue and woven bone trabeculae. Due to the aggressive nature of the fibroma, the patient underwent a right hemimandibulectomy. This report highlights the critical need fo

The premises of mandibular reconstruction are the restoration of occlusion and mandibular contour for the purpose of preserving the facial identity, oral airway, and effective speech and mastication. Establishing functional occlusion is the primary tenant in all mandibular reconstruction. In cases of segmental defects, particularly in dentate regions of the mandible, there has been a paradigm shift over the past two decades in how surgeons are approaching the restoration of load-bearing mandibular continuity with capacity for dental implantation. Here we discuss considerations for deciding the

BACKGROUND: Mandibular condylar osteochondroma (OC) could lead to facial morphologic and functional disturbances, such as facial asymmetry, malocclusion, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction. However, after condylar OC resection, the inaccurate reposition of the neocondyle still needs to be solved. The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility of the condylar osteotomy and repositioning guide to reposition the neocondyle in the treatment of patients with severe deformity secondary to condylar OC.
RESULTS: Three patients with severe deformity secondary to OC of the mandibular con

PURPOSE: A cohort review was performed to compare the effect of a number of variables on mandible reconstruction plate (R-plate) survival and to identify the potential risk factors for plate fracture. We also reported our preliminary results of 3-dimensional (3D) printed reconstruction plates.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The data from patients who had undergone mandibular reconstruction using reconstruction plates were evaluated for age, gender, mandibular resection indication, defect site and length, remaining occluded teeth, reconstruction plate type, simultaneous soft or bone tissue reconstructi

Intramandibular salivary inclusions and ectopia concern the main salivary glands. The most common takes the form of a regular well-defined lacunar appearance situated at the mandibular angle or molar region. This asymptomatic inclusions is in fact only the imprint of a lobule of the sub-mandibular gland on the mandible. More rarely, the parotid gland and sublingual gland may also be responsible for a lacunar radiological appearance in the mandible. By contrast, a few ectopic glandular lobules of the sublingual may be completely induced at the site of the mandibular symphsis. Salivary inclusion

Osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle is extremely rare. An unusual case of a 32-year-old man is reported. Throughout a two-year period the patient suffered from intractable pain in the left T. M. J. region, anterior dislocation of the condylar head, malocclusion and facial asymmetry. Radiologic examination revealed that the cartilaginous cap of an overgrowth had functioned as an articular cartilage. A "pseudo articulation" was created with the prominent articular eminence and allowed an almost free movement of the mandible. Review of the seven reported cases revealed that the rare occurren

We retrospectively evaluated 42 consecutive cancer patients with numb chin syndrome (NCS). Breast cancer comprised 64% of the primary tumors, and lymphoproliferative neoplasms comprised 14%. A standard workup (including imaging of the brain, base of skull, and mandible, and CSF analysis) led to the diagnosis of a metastatic etiology in 89% of the patients. Fifty percent of the patients had mandibular metastases, 14% base-of-skull bone lesions, and 22% leptomeningeal seeding. NCS was a late manifestation of malignancy, associated with disease progression in 67% of the patients or heralding a re

Pleomorphic adenoma directly arising in the neck is thought to originate from heterotopic salivary gland tissue. In this article, we present the case of a 55-year-old female patient with a histologically proven pleomorphic adenoma located at the left mandibular angle, anteriorly to the sternocleidomastoid muscle and posteroinferiorly to the submandibular gland. As the patient also had an ipsilateral thyroid nodule with coarse calcifications, clinical and radiological features suggested a possible level II metastatic lymph node. However, ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology and pos

Osteoid osteomas are benign skeletal neoplasms that are commonly encountered in the bones of the lower extremities, but are exceedingly rare in jaw bones with a prevalence of less than 1%. This unique clinical entity is usually seen in younger individuals, with nocturnal pain and swelling as its characteristic clinical manifestations. The size of the lesion is rarely found to be more than 2 cm. We hereby report a rare case of osteoid osteoma originating from the neck of the mandibular condyle that grew to large enough proportions to result in conductive hearing loss in addition to pain, swelli

Odontogenic tumors represent a collection of entities ranging from hamartomas to destructive benign and malignant neoplasms. Occasionally, pathologists encounter gnathic lesions which clearly exhibit an odontogenic origin but do not fit within the confines of established diagnoses. Here, we describe two such odontogenic tumors, both affecting 3-year-old males. Each case presented as a destructive, radiolucent mandibular lesion composed of mesenchymal cells, some with unique multi-lobed nuclei, frequently arranged in a reticular pattern and supported by a myxoid stroma with focal laminations. Juxtacortical chondrosarcoma (JC) is a rare, malignant, cartilage-forming tumor arising from the external bone surface. It mainly involves long bones and very rarely involves maxillofacial skeleton. Chondrosarcoma in general accounts for about 10-20% of all bone neoplasm, of which only 1-3% is involved in maxillofacial skeleton. So far only two cases of JC have been reported in mandible. In this article we report a rare case of JC in a 49-year-old male primarily involving symphysis of mandible. This is the third case of JC in mandible and first of its kind to be reported in mandibular symphysi

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of maxillary and mandibular defects following oncologic resection remains challenging due to their three-dimensional complexity and critical role in function and aesthetics. The scapular tip free flap (STFF) provides reliable vascularity, substantial bone stock, and chimeric versatility. Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) has been widely applied in reconstructive surgery to optimize resection accuracy and flap insetting, but its role in STFF supine harvest and inset has never been reported. This report aims to describe the advantages of application of
