The prosthodontic management of a 62-year-old edentulous woman with a velopharyngeal defect following maxillectomy and radiation therapy is described. She presented with concerns about obturator stability, hypernasality, and fluid leakage from her pharyngeal obturator prosthesis. A new pharyngeal obturator and mandibular paralleling prosthesis were fabricated using a digital workflow by incorporating computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology and conventional processing techniques. This approach reduced clinical visits while ensuring optimal fit, retention, and

Oligodontia is the congenital absence of six or more permanent teeth, excluding the third molars. Oligodontia of permanent dentition is a rare occurrence. Preservation of the remaining deciduous dentition in such situations is important for both functional and esthetic rehabilitation of the patient. This clinical report describes the rehabilitation of a 16-year-old male with oligodontia of permanent teeth treated by an interdisciplinary team of prosthodontist, pedodontist, and orthodontist. The remaining deciduous dentition was endodontically treated. Occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) of the d

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) displays a high remodelling capability. The current purpose was to investigate the differences between mandibular condylar remodelling responses of growing mice to installation and removal of unilateral anterior crossbite (UAC) prosthesis. Twenty-four mice were divided into one mock control group and two UAC groups. Unilateral anterior crossbite was created by installing a pair of prosthesis to left-side maxillary and mandibular incisors. Unilateral anterior crossbite was removed in removal group at 3 weeks but remained in UAC group. Temporomandibular joints were

Total temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR) is a surgical procedure in which end-stage temporomandibular joint disorders are replaced with an alloplastic prosthesis between the mandible and the base of the skull when autogenous grafts are inadvisable. These alloplastic prostheses may be available as stock or custom-made prostheses consisting of the mandibular condyle and glenoid fossa components. Although the first total temporomandibular joint prosthesis was used in the 1960s, we present the case of a 20-year-old female patient, probably the first case of total temporomandibular joint ar

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of prostheses designed using mandibular motion analysis in maxillary full-arch implant rehabilitation.
METHODS: Twenty patients were assigned to a study group (n = 10), receiving prostheses designed with dynamic occlusal data from an electronic jaw motion analyzer (JMA), or a control group (n = 10) using conventional static digital workflows. Between-group differences in occlusal adjustment depth (MAE), area, and chairside time were analyzed by independent t-tests. Within the study group, the stability of mandibular movement paths (provisional vs.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) reconstruction may be required in complex cases in which there are additional mandibular or zygomatic arch defects. The reconstructive options include autogenous tissue, alloplastic material, or combinations of these. The authors describe 4 cases in which TMJ reconstruction was performed with TMJ Concepts customized joint prostheses. The prosthetic components were designed to restore major defects in the zygomatic arch and the mandibular ramus and body, including one case in which the mandibular component was used to restore total mandibular continuity. The prosth

Fibular free flap reconstruction remains the workhorse of postmandibulectomy reconstruction. Dental implantation to support a dental prosthesis is a sought-after outcome when the area of resection involves tooth-bearing zones. Chronic perisoft tissue pedicle hyperplasia with secondary infection leading to gradual bone loss is a simple complication to manage in the general population, but it becomes a serious issue in the fibula mandibular reconstruction patient in that it can lead to pathological fracture of the fibula. A case of a patient with a near fracture of his fibula mandibular reconstr

Dental management of patients with epi-dermolysis bullosa (EB) is challenging because of the severe soft tissue lesions associated with this disease. A case history is presented where two immediate endosseous implants were placed in the mandible of a patient with recessive dystrophic EB using computer-aided technology to plan the surgery and prosthetic rehabilitation. After a 24-month follow-up, the prosthesis was stable with healthy asymptomatic soft tissue around the implants. The stereolithographic model provides a precise and noninvasive copy of the mandibular and maxillary arches of patie

Twenty-three patients with Kennedy Class I mandibular dentition were supplied with prostheses in the posterior parts of the mandible. On one side they were given a prosthesis supported by two implants (prosthesis Type I) and on the other side they received a prosthesis supported by one implant and one natural tooth (prosthesis Type II). Sixty-nine fixtures were inserted and 46 prostheses constructed. Eight of the fixtures were lost during the observation period. The failure rate of the implants was about the same in the two types of prostheses; five fixtures belonged to prostheses Type I (10.9

OBJECTIVES: Patients suffering from osteoarthritis, ankylosis (e.g. post-trauma or tumour) in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can present with symptoms such as severely restricted mouth opening, pain or other dynamic restrictions of the mandible. To alleviate the symptoms, a total joint prosthesis can be indicated, such as the Groningen TMJ prosthesis. This was developed as a stock device with a lowered centre of rotation for improved translational and opening capacity. This study aimed to improve the design of the prosthesis, and produce a workflow for a customized Groningen TMJ prosthesis,
