Dexamethasone Versus Dexmedetomidine as Adjuncts to Serratus Anterior Plane Block for Postoperative Analgesia After Modified Radical Mastectomy: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Serratus anterior plane block (SAPB) is widely used for postoperative analgesia following modified radical mastectomy (MRM). Adjuvant drugs such as dexamethasone and dexmedetomidine may enhance its efficacy. OBJECTIVE: To compare the analgesic efficacy of dexamethasone versus dexmedetomidine as adjuncts to SAPB in patients undergoing MRM. METHODS: This randomized clinical study included 126 female patients undergoing MRM, allocated into two equal groups: dexamethasone (DXA) and dexmedetomidine (DMX). Outcomes included postoperative pain scores, analgesic consumption, sedation lev

Results of treating 1,178 patients with breast cancer by radical mastectomy and postoperative irradiation where metastases to axillary lymph nodes occurred.

A retrospective study of 1,178 females suffering from cancer of the breast and treated by radical mastectomy is presented. All operations were performed by essentially one group of four senior surgeons, each either trained or connected with Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York and spent practically all of his professional career in the treatment of cancer. The same techniques of surgery were practiced. The same principles of the overall treatment were utilized; namely, if there were no metastases to lymph nodes detected on histologic studies, no radiation therapy was given. If metasta

Association of serratus anterior and pectoserratus plane blocks with persistent shoulder dysfunction after modified radical mastectomy in older breast cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative shoulder dysfunction is a frequent and disabling complication following modified radical mastectomy (MRM), particularly in geriatric patients. Although pectoserratus plane block (PSPB) and serratus anterior plane blocks are well established for acute postoperative analgesia, their impact on long-term shoulder function remains unclear. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 147 women aged ≥65 years who underwent MRM for breast cancer. Patients who received PSPB combined with serratus anterior plane blocks formed the block group (n = 78), while those managed

Necrotizing Fasciitis of Bilateral Breasts following Unilateral Modified Radical Mastectomy for Invasive Ductal Carcinoma: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Necrotizing fasciitis of the breast is a rare but potentially fatal soft tissue infection. It may occur primarily in patients without any direct cause, and less commonly after undergoing elective surgical procedures such as cosmetic mammoplasties and oncologic resections. This is a case of a 46-year-old female with stage IIIA invasive ductal carcinoma of the left breast treated with modified radical mastectomy presenting with a necrotizing infection involving the bilateral breast regions and left lateral abdomen six days after operation. She was managed with broad-spectrum antibiotics and radi

Analysis of Seroma Formation, Flap Necrosis, and Postoperative Pain Following Modified Radical Mastectomy in Patients With Breast Cancer: A Prospective Study.

Background Breast cancer is one of the leading malignancies among Indian women, and it remains a significant contributor to the global cancer burden. Modified radical mastectomy (MRM), which involves removing the entire breast, nipple-areola complex, and axillary lymph nodes, is commonly performed. However, postoperative complications such as seroma formation, pain, and flap necrosis significantly impact patient recovery and quality of life. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and presentation of seroma and flap necrosis, analyze the severity and distribution patterns of post

Efficacy of intravenous dexmedetomidine-lignocaine infusion compared to morphine for intraoperative haemodynamic stability in modified radical mastectomy: A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In recent times, non-opioid analgesic-based anaesthesia has been gaining popularity as it can achieve the goals of hypnosis, amnesia, and haemodynamic stability while avoiding opioid side effects. Our study compares the efficacy of opioid-free anaesthesia and opioid-based general anaesthesia regarding intraoperative haemodynamic stability, anaesthetic requirements, awareness, and recovery profile. METHODS: After receiving ethical approval and registering the trial, we conducted this randomised, single-blinded study on American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical s

Determining the Efficacy of Octreotide on Lymphorrhea Formation in Patients With Early Breast Carcinoma After Modified Radical Mastectomy: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative lymphorrhea and seroma formation are frequent complications after modified radical mastectomy (MRM) that can prolong recovery. Octreotide, a somatostatin analog with broad anti-secretory effects, has shown promise in reducing lymphatic drainage in various surgical settings. We conducted a randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy of octreotide in reducing lymphorrhea and seroma formation in patients with early breast cancer (stages I, IIA, and IIB) undergoing MRM. METHODS: Eighty patients with early breast carcinoma (stages I, IIA, and IIB) scheduled for MRM were ran
