Association between exposure to social media and knowledge of sexual and reproductive health among adolescent girls: evidence from the UDAYA survey in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND: Poor sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes amongst adolescent girls in India have been associated with inadequate knowledge of SRH. Evidence suggests that social media can promote health-seeking behaviors. Our objective in this study was to determine the association between exposure to social media and SRH knowledge among adolescent girls in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, India. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 10,425 adolescent girls from the UDAYA survey (wave-2, 2018-19). Girls' exposure to social media was the key predictor, and SRH knowledge of sexual int

Chlamydin trachomatis in cell culture. I. Comparison of efficiencies of infection in several chemically defined media, at various pH and temperature values, and after exposure to diethylaminoethyl-dextran.

Three chemically defined cell culture media, Eagle minimum essential medium (MEM) with Earle basal salt solution, Eagle MEM with Hanks basal salt solution, and a modified Eagle MEM, were tested and found capable of supporting the development of Chlamydia trachomatis in (60)Co-treated McCoy cells. The enhancement of trachoma infection by diethylaminoethyl-dextran (DEAE-D) was greater at pH values closer to neutrality than at any other pH values measured at the start of the experiments. Centrifugation of the trachoma inoculum onto cell monolayers at 33 C increased the number of inclusions when c

Short-term effects of media exposure to the thin ideal in female inpatients with an eating disorder compared to female inpatients with a mood or anxiety disorder or women with no psychiatric disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research demonstrated that the exposure to media portrayals of the thin body ideal negatively affects body satisfaction and mood of healthy women and thus represents a sociocultural risk factor for the development of eating disorders. However, at present, it is not known whether negative effects of the thin ideal are pronounced in eating-disordered patients. METHOD: Female inpatients with a current diagnosis of anorexia nervosa (N = 36), bulimia nervosa (N = 32), or mood or anxiety disorder (N = 31), and women with no current psychiatric diagnosis were randomly assigned to

Exposure to fitness role models on social media and social physique anxiety among college students: the sequential mediating roles of upward body comparison and body self-discrepancy.

INTRODUCTION: Fitness role models on social media combine exercise- and health-oriented communication with highly visible body ideals. This study examined associations among exposure to fitness role models, upward body comparison, body self-discrepancy, and social physique anxiety among college students, including separate and theoretically ordered indirect associations. METHODS: The study comprised a preliminary measurement phase and a formal cross-sectional survey. A pilot study with 162 valid responses examined item performance, internal consistency, and dimensional structure. The formal s

Prenatal Air Pollution Exposures, DNA Methyl Transferase Genotypes, and Associations with Newborn LINE1 and Alu Methylation and Childhood Blood Pressure and Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in the Children's Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Although exposure to ambient air pollutants increases cardiovascular disease risk in adults little is known about the effects of prenatal exposure. Genetic variation and epigenetic alterations are two mechanisms that may influence the effects of early-life exposures on cardiovascular phenotypes. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether genetic and epigenetic variation modify associations between prenatal air pollution on markers of cardiovascular risk in childhood. METHODS: We used linear regression analysis to investigate the associations between prenatal pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NO2

Novel Dual Mechanism GRT-X Agonist Acting on Kv7 Potassium Channel/Translocator Protein Receptor Prevents Motoneuron Degeneration Following Exposure to Mouse and Human Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Frontotemporal Dementia Astrocyte-Conditioned Media.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) form a continuous spectrum of aggressive neurodegenerative diseases affecting primarily motoneurons (MNs) and cortical frontotemporal neurons. Noncell autonomous mechanisms contribute to ALS/FTD, wherein astrocytes release toxic factor(s) detrimental to MNs. Because of the multifactorial nature of ALS, single-pathway-focused therapies have limited effectiveness in improving ALS. Therefore, novel combinatorial therapies are currently being pursued. Here, we evaluated whether the simultaneous activation of two complementary ta

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis-Related Messages Across Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (Rebranded X): Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Interventions are needed to address the lack of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) awareness and mitigate barriers related to PrEP use. One such intervention modality is social media, as PrEP awareness and communication on issues, such as access and cost, are easily addressed via clear social media messages on platforms for PrEP-eligible people, and especially young people, who use social media more frequently. OBJECTIVE: This descriptive study seeks to extend understanding of PrEP awareness and usage by examining PrEP-related communication across 3 popular social media platforms (Fa

Editorial: The pressing need to investigate the effects of media immersion in early childhood on brain and behavioral development.

Over the past several years, increasingly younger children are being exposed to significant amounts of media, while at the same time parental monitoring of young children's media exposure is decreasing. Increasing media exposure in young children, including increased exposure to media with aggressive, violent, or otherwise inappropriate content, has potential adverse consequences for social, emotional, and neural development. Adverse effects are potentially greater in early childhood given the high neuroplasticity of this period. Despite this, very little research has rigorously examined poten…

You sure about that? The effects of textual and image-based Skepticism on belief in dubious social-media claims.

On social media, people often react to posts using both written comments and images. While prior work has shown that these reactions can influence belief in claims, it has often conflated signals of (dis)endorsement with justifications of dissent. It is therefore unclear whether skeptical comments that express doubt about a claim's veracity without providing informational content can reduce claim belief. We tested whether pure text- or image-based expressions of skepticism reduce belief in dubious claims, and how skepticism compares with non-evidence-supported rebuttals that explicitly declare
