Diagnosis and treatment of mediastinal cyst using transparietal needle aspiration.

The authors present a case report on a 60-year-old female patient suffering from benign mediastinal cyst, arterial hypertension and porphyria. CT-guided transparietal fine-needle punction was done simultaneously as a diagnostic and a therapeutic procedure. Partial regression of the cyst was still apparent at the check CT investigation after six months. The examination of the level of immunoglobulins in the fluid obtained during transparietal punction confirms the diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst.

Mediastinal esophageal duplication cyst associated with a partial pericardial defect.

A two-year-old girl with a mediastinal esophageal duplication cyst is the twelfth example of a thoracic cyst of foregut origin or pulmonary "sequestration" (bronchopulmonary foregut malformation according to the expanded definition of Gerle et al.) that has been associated with a partial pericardial defect on the same side, suggesting that anomalous thoracic masses of several morphologic types have a similar pathogenesis.

Mediastinal parathyroid cyst: A case report and review of the literature.

Mediastinal parathyroid cysts (MPCs) are extremely rare, benign lesions arising from the parathyroid glands and residing within the thoracic cavity. This study aims to advance understanding of MPC, emphasizing accurate diagnosis and management approaches for this rare condition. A 46-year-old woman presented with dysphagia for one week. Blood tests revealed elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) (112.8 pg/mL) and normal serum calcium (9.54 mg/dL). Ultrasonography identified a large, well-defined cystic nodule measuring 46 × 30 × 25 mm, extending retro-sternally in the right upper third of the ches

[Mediastinal pancreatic cysts: review and own clinical observations].

OBJECTIVE: To present the results of surgical treatment of patients with mediastinalpancreatogeniccysts (MPC). MATERIAL AND METHODS: There were 5 patients with MPC. RESULTS: Laboratory tests revealed increased blood amylase level by 1.5-2 times in 3 cases, urine diastase by 4-5 times - in 2 cases. Pleural effusion with amylase concentration in the fluid from 5680 to 48 640 units was diagnosed in 4 cases. CT data of preudocysts of pancreatic body and tail were obtained in 3 cases, head and body - in 2 patients. These cysts extended to posterior mediastinum through the hiatal orifice for about

Long-term survival in six cats with mediastinal cysts.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Mediastinal cysts were diagnosed as incidental findings in six cats evaluated for non-thoracic disease, including staging for historical bladder leiomyosarcoma, flea dermatitis and hairballs, and hyperthyroidism. Radiographically, the cysts appeared as soft tissue opacities cranial to the heart. Ultrasound revealed the masses to be thin-walled, single lumen, anechoic, fluid-filled structures. One cat also had thoracic and abdominal CT performed for cancer staging; the CT revealed a well-defined, fluid-attenuating mass without peripheral contrast enhancement in the cranial …

Factors affecting the preoperative diagnosis of anterior mediastinal cysts.

OBJECTIVE: Although anterior mediastinal cysts are generally benign diseases, the preoperative diagnosis of these lesions is not necessarily accurate. This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting the preoperative diagnosis of anterior mediastinal cysts. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 35 patients with pathologically diagnosed anterior mediastinal cysts (20 thymic cysts, 7 bronchogenic cysts, 5 pericardial cysts, and 3 others) that were resected at our hospital and evaluated their preoperative diagnosis, cyst size, and fluid content. RESULTS: Eighteen, 15, 1, and 1 …

[Successfully operated cases of mediastinal and retroperitoneal bronchial cysts].

CASE REPORT: Two young men were operated in our department for bronchiogen cysts with unusual locations. In the first case a mediastinal cyst caused severe swallowing problems, while in the second a retroperitoneal cyst resembled to an adrenal adenoma. It was only the postoperative histology, which clarified the exact diagnosis of the removed cysts. DISCUSSION: Only a few percent of mediastinal tumours are bronchial cysts that develop due to developmental disorders. Symptomatic ones are more easily detectable. Bronchial cysts localized in the abdominal cavity or retroperitoneum are especially…

[Diagnostic and surgical treatment aspects of mediastinal tumors and cysts].

A detailed study is made of the anatomy and physiology of the mediastinum. Proceeding from the anatomo-physiologic peculiarities of the mediastinum, the clinical picture, pathoanatomy and diagnostic possibilities of mediastinal tumours and cysts are comprehensively discussed. Seventeen patients with primary true mediastinal tumours and cysts, of which 16 cases with benign neoplasms and one - with malignant blastoma are reported. The results of the surgical treatment of benign mediastinal tumours and cysts are estimated as very good.

Surgical approaches to mediastinal cysts: clinical practice review.

The traditional approach to mediastinal cyst and mass resection has been open via median sternotomy or thoracotomy. With the advent of minimally invasive techniques, there have been successful cases completed via video-assisted thoracoscopic (VATS) and robot-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (RATS). Although mediastinal cysts are uncommon, they are a significant and relevant topic in the practice of thoracic surgery. Thus, this clinical practice review aims to summarize and highlight some of the key case series and retrospective studies in order to provide insight on each of the approaches. In ad…

How to remove multiple mediastinal and pericardial hydatid cysts.

A 61-year-old male who lived for 30 years in a rural area presented chest pain of 3 months duration. Multiple hydatid cysts (Echinococcus granulosus) were diagnosed in the pericardium and the mediastinum by echocardiography and computed tomography. The cysts were removed successfully with the patient on cardiopulmonary bypass and beating heart.  This video tutorial shows how we removed the cysts, using the puncture-aspiration and enucleation technique.  Few videos of this technique exist, and we believe that this tutorial is a helpful demonstration of how to handle mediastinal and pericardial

Descending necrotizing mediastinitis associated with an infected dentigerous cyst.

Descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) is a rare condition in which an infection from the head and neck propagates into the mediastinum. The most common cause of DNM is odontogenic infection. DNM is spread by the fascial planes from the neck into the mediastinum and requires an aggressive surgical drainage through cervical and thoracic approaches. We report on a 67-year-old male patient, who had acute mediastinitis related to an infected dentigerous cyst in the left parasymphyseal region. A multidisciplinary team approach was used to treat the patient. The team consisted of thoracic surgeo

[Intrapulmonary and mediastinal, double bronchogenic cysts; report of a case].

A 59-year-old woman was pointed out abnormal shadows on chest film and has been followed up since 2001. In October 2006, she consulted our hospital for further examination. Computed tomography (CT) showed double cystic lesions located in the right lower lobe, and in the paraesophageal region. The patient underwent video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) right lower lobectomy and resection of the tumor in the mediastinum. The content of the tumor were greenish and whitish discharge. Histopathologically, both were bronchogenic cysts. The patient was discharged on 17th postoperative day and doing

A case of a mediastinal neurenteric cyst demonstrated by prenatal ultrasound.

We report the case of a posterior large mediastinal neurenteric cyst demonstrated by prenatal ultrasound (US). Postnatal chest radiography and CT studies demonstrated a posterior, large cystic mediastinal mass associated with vertebral abnormalities including scoliosis, hemivertebrae and anterior spina bifida. Because postnatally respiratory distress developed and rapidly progressed, an emergency operation was performed 12 hours after delivery. The cyst was excised via right posterolateral thoracotomy. Postoperatively, respiratory distress regressed. This is the third reported case of a neuren
