The influence of glucose administration on stress reactivity and long-term memory in adult men and women.

Stress and the associated cortisol release have profound effects on long-term memory (LTM). While glucose increases the cortisol stress response and exhibits memory enhancing effects in non-stressful situations, the interaction of glucose and stress on LTM has rarely been studied. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the glucose-related amplification of the cortisol stress response would enhance LTM formation. Overall, N = 62 healthy, fasted adults (age M = 23.13, SD = 3.02; 54.84 % female) participated. They consumed a drink containing water or glucose and underwent a non-stressfu

The osm-9 mutant strain is defective in the recovery phase of long-term memory dynamics.

Memory by definition is the storage of learned information from experiences where it can be recalled in the future. Memory is essential for organisms of any level, from single celled bacteria to complex mammals like whales in order for them to adapt and survive. The storage of long term memory is known to start in the hippocampus but long-term memory is not simply contained in this one region in the brain but across multiple regions including the cortex, amygdala and nucleus accumbens. This diversity of locations that memory can be located in prompts the question of what molecular components w

Experimental Study of Long Short-Term Memory and Transformer Models for Fall Detection on Smartwatches.

Falls are the second leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide. While numerous wearable fall detection devices incorporating AI models have been developed, none of them are used successfully in a fall detection application running on commodity-based smartwatches in real time. The system misses some falls, and generates an annoying amount of False Positives for practical use. We have investigated and experimented with an LSTM model for fall detection on a smartwatch. Even though the LSTM model has high accuracy during offline testing, the good performance of offline LSTM models can

Gestational diabetes in mice induces hematopoietic memory that affects the long-term health of the offspring.

Gestational diabetes is a common medical complication of pregnancy that is associated with adverse perinatal outcomes and an increased risk of metabolic diseases and atherosclerosis in adult offspring. The mechanisms responsible for this delayed pathological transmission remain unknown. In mouse models, we found that the development of atherosclerosis in adult offspring born to diabetic pregnancy can be in part linked to hematopoietic alterations. Although they do not show any gross metabolic disruptions, the adult offspring maintain hematopoietic features associated with diabetes, indicating

Effect of Long-Term Sodium Salicylate Administration on Learning, Memory, and Neurogenesis in the Rat Hippocampus.

Tinnitus is thought to be caused by damage to the auditory and nonauditory system due to exposure to loud noise, aging, or other etiologies. However, at present, the exact neurophysiological basis of chronic tinnitus remains unknown. To explore whether the function of the limbic system is disturbed in tinnitus, the hippocampus was selected, which plays a vital role in learning and memory. The hippocampal function was examined with a learning and memory procedure. For this purpose, sodium salicylate (NaSal) was used to create a rat animal model of tinnitus, evaluated with prepulse inhibition be

The production effect in adults with dysarthria: improving long-term verbal memory by vocal production.

People show better memory for words read aloud relative to words read silently, the Production Effect (PE). Vocalisation at study makes the produced (aloud) words more distinct than the non-produced (silent) words, hence more memorable. Such encoding distinctiveness is related to the additional processing of aloud words that is later used during retrieval. This study investigated the PE in dysarthric adults, characterised by speech production difficulties. Their memory performance (recognition) was compared to a group of healthy adults. Results showed a PE for both groups. The production benef

Design and validation of the 1-week memory battery for assessing episodic memory and accelerated long-term forgetting in cognitively unimpaired subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Subtle decline in memory is thought to arise in the preclinical phase of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, detecting these initial cognitive difficulties cross-sectionally has been challenging, and the exact nature of the decline is still debated. Accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF) has been recently suggested as one of the earliest and most sensitive indicators of memory dysfunction in subjects at risk of developing AD. The objective of this study was to design and validate the 1-week memory battery (1WMB) for assessing episodic memory and ALF in cognitively unimpaired individu

The HDAC inhibitor sodium butyrate moderately enhances long-term fear extinction memory retrieval in humans.

Fear extinction and its persistence depend on epigenetic modifications, which can be potentiated by histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACis). Butyrate (NaBu), a short-chain fatty acid and endogenous HDACi, promotes persistent fear extinction in rodent models by increasing histone acetylation in promoter regions of plasticity- and memory-related genes, thereby enhancing their transcription. To test translational relevance in humans, we conducted a six-arm randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled intervention study in 180 healthy participants who underwent a 3-day Pavlovian fear conditioning

Digital Pathology Archives as Long-Term Clinical Memory: A Self-Sovereign Identity-Based Governance Model.

Background/Objectives: Digital pathology is transforming diagnostic workflows through whole-slide imaging (WSI), digital archiving, artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted analysis, and remote consultation. The existing literature only partly addresses patient access to pathology records and cross-institutional sharing within a holistic governance framework. This study proposes a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI)-based conceptual governance model that treats digital pathology archives as components of long-term clinical memory. Here, clinical memory refers to a pathology-specific information layer t

Long-term trajectories of memory, depression, and mobility independence before death: a multi-cohort study.

Cognitive and functional decline are key indicators of mortality risk in older adults. However, temporal onset and progression trajectories of these declines before death, and their cross-national applicability, remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the trajectories of memory performance, depressive symptoms, activities of daily living (ADL), and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) across four large-scale cohorts: CHARLS (China), ELSA (England), HRS (USA), and SHARE (Europe), to identify patterns associated with imminent mortality. Backward timescale analyses wer

Classification of distinct lung diseases using novel enhanced long short-term memory based optimization methodology.

Lung disease classification using chest X-ray (CXR) images has become essential for early diagnosis and improved clinical decision-making. However, challenges such as low image quality, feature similarity among diseases, and classification instability reduce diagnostic reliability. To address these issues, this study proposes a novel ELSTM-AZOA framework for multiclass lung disease classification using the NIH CXR dataset. Initially, the collected CXR images are preprocessed using the balance contrast enhancement technique to improve image quality. U-Net +  + is then employed for accurate lung

Long-term B cell memory emerges at uniform relative rates in the human immune response.

B cells generate pathogen-specific antibodies and play an essential role in providing adaptive protection against infection. Antibody genes are modified in evolutionary processes acting on the B cell populations within an individual. These populations proliferate, differentiate, and migrate to long-term niches in the body. However, the dynamics of these processes in the human immune system are primarily inferred from mouse studies. We addressed this gap by sequencing the antibody repertoire and transcriptomes from single B cells in four immune-rich tissues from six individuals. We find that B

Enhancing heart disease classification based on greylag goose optimization algorithm and long short-term memory.

Heart disease is a category of various conditions that affect the heart, which includes multiple diseases that influence its structure and operation. Such conditions may consist of coronary artery disease, which is characterized by the narrowing or clotting of the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle, with the resulting threat of heart attacks. Heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias), heart valve problems, congenital heart defects present at birth, and heart muscle disorders (cardiomyopathies) are other types of heart disease. The objective of this work is to introduce the Greylag Goose

Predictors of long-term memory and network connectivity 10 years after anterior temporal lobe resection.

OBJECTIVE: Anterior temporal lobe resection (ATLR) effectively controls seizures in medically refractory temporal lobe epilepsy but risks significant episodic memory decline. Beyond 1 year postoperatively, the influence of preoperative clinical factors on episodic memory and long-term network plasticity remain underexplored. Ten years post-ATLR, we aimed to determine biomarkers of successful memory network reorganization and establish presurgical features' lasting impact on memory function. METHODS: Twenty-five ATLR patients (12 left-sided) and 10 healthy controls underwent a memory-encoding

Doppler Radar Sensor-Based Fall Detection Using a Convolutional Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Model.

Falls among the elderly are a common and serious health risk that can lead to physical injuries and other complications. To promptly detect and respond to fall events, radar-based fall detection systems have gained widespread attention. In this paper, a deep learning model is proposed based on the frequency spectrum of radar signals, called the convolutional bidirectional long short-term memory (CB-LSTM) model. The introduction of the CB-LSTM model enables the fall detection system to capture both temporal sequential and spatial features simultaneously, thereby enhancing the accuracy and relia

Prediction Errors for Aversive Events Shape Long-Term Memory Formation through a Distinct Neural Mechanism.

Prediction errors (PEs) have been known for decades to guide associative learning, but their role in episodic memory formation has been discovered only recently. To identify the neural mechanisms underlying the impact of aversive PEs on long-term memory formation, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging, while participants saw a series of unique stimuli and estimated the probability that an aversive shock would follow. Our behavioral data showed that negative PEs (i.e., omission of an expected outcome) were associated with superior recognition of the predictive stimuli, whereas positive

Restoring myocardial infarction-induced long-term memory impairment by targeting the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is a serious comorbidity in heart failure patients, but effective therapies are lacking. We investigated the mechanisms that alter hippocampal neurons following myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: MI was induced in male C57Bl/6 mice by left anterior descending coronary artery ligation. We utilised standard procedures to measure cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) protein levels, inflammatory mediator expression, neuronal structure, and hippocampal memory. Using in vitro and in vivo approaches, we assessed the role of neuroinflammation in hippocampa

Effects of combining retrieval practice and tDCS over long-term memory: A randomized controlled trial.

The ability to retain new information is important in daily life. In particular, two techniques have shown promise for improving long-term retention: retrieval practice (RP), which consists of actively retrieving information from long-term memory to make it more accessible in the future; and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), which consists of non-invasive brain stimulation that modulates cognitive processes by increasing and decreasing neuronal excitability. Previous studies have implicated the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (l-dlPFC) in memory encoding and memory organizati

Towards Attention-Based Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory for Travel Time Prediction of Bus Journeys.

Travel time prediction is critical for advanced traveler information systems (ATISs), which provides valuable information for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the urban transportation systems. However, in the area of bus trips, existing studies have focused on directly using the structured data to predict travel time for a single bus trip. For state-of-the-art public transportation information systems, a bus journey generally has multiple bus trips. Additionally, due to the lack of study on data fusion, it is even inadequate for the development of underlying intelligent transporta
