We report an adult patient with congenital dysplasia of the ring finger who required a corrective osteotomy for an angulatory metacarpal deformity.

Three cases of an avulsion fracture of the base of the index metacarpal by the tendon of Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus are reported. There are two previous reports of this injury which were both treated operatively. These cases were treated conservatively with satisfactory results. The relevant anatomy, mechanism of injury and incidence are discussed.

We have treated 1,080 fractured metacarpals between January 1972 and December 1982. Supported by ten years of experience and this homogenous series, we explain our choices of treatment. A scissoring deformity of the fingers frequently results from malunion of a phalangeal or metacarpal fracture. If union occurs with rotation, the injured digit will scissor with an adjacent digit on flexion of the hand. A 2-year-old boy with congenital ulnar deviation and flexion deformity of the metacarpophalangeal joints (incidentally associated with ipsilateral metatarsus varus) was treated by surgical centralization of the extensor tendons. An adult male muskox ( Ovibos moschatus ), harvested on 26 August 2014 on Victoria Island, Nunavut, in the Canadian Arctic, had proliferative dermatitis on the muzzle and fetlocks suggestive of contagious ecthyma or orf (Parapoxvirus).
