Pathology of Minamata disease. With special reference to its pathogenesis.

On the basis of pathological studies of the Minamata disease induced by consumption of large amounts of fish and shellfish contaminated with methylmercury, the neuropathological and metal-histochemical changes in the human body were discussed. Methylmercuric compounds accumulated in the seafoods were absorbed by the human body following oral intake, and distributed widely and accumulated in various organs and tissues. The distribution of the pathological lesions could thus include the nervous system, particularly the brain with a characteristics preference. There were apparently two major mech

Methylmercury hotspots in hybrid constructed wetlands: Mechanisms and controls.

Constructed wetlands (CWs), widely utilized for watershed water treatment, have the potential to intensify the production of methylmercury (MeHg) with high risks to wildlife and humans. However, MeHg production and its controlling factors in such artificial systems remain poorly understood, particularly the impacts of human interventions like subsurface flow CW (SSFCWs) and weirs. In this study, the hotspots and controlling mechanisms of MeHg production in a typical hybrid CW consisting of SSFCW and free water surface CW (FWSCW) were investigated. Despite 65.9% total mercury (THg) removal main

Rice Cultivation Reshapes Mercury Accumulation in Soil-Plant Systems.

Predicting the bioaccumulation of potent neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in rice is essential for assessing and mitigating human exposure risks, particularly for Asians and infants. However, significant uncertainties lie in understanding and predicting MeHg accumulation in rice, partially due to the insufficient understanding of how rice plants regulate Hg biogeochemistry in soil-rice systems. Here, we conducted a pot experiment involving 32 commonly cultivated rice varieties under the same soil and ambient conditions. By analyzing MeHg contents in rice-paddy systems and amino acid profiles in

Making waves: Exploring scenarios of abiotic mercury methylation in nature.

The transformation of inorganic mercury (Hg) into neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) is critical for Hg's entry into aquatic food chains and its subsequent threats to wildlife and human health. While microbial Hg methylation is well recognized, growing evidence suggests that abiotic Hg methylation could be a significant yet overlooked source of MeHg. However, extrapolating laboratory-derived abiotic Hg methylation data to real-world conditions remains challenging. To address current knowledge gaps and guide future research, we examine the environmental distribution of three critical abiotic Hg me

Mercury Immobilization without Methylation in Sulfidogenic Systems Dominated by Sulfur Disproportionating Bacteria.

The sulfidogenic process mediated by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) is not ideal for treating mercury (Hg)-bearing wastewater due to the risk of methylmercury (MeHg) production. Addressing this challenge, our study demonstrated that, under S0-rich conditions and without organic additives, sulfidogenic communities dominated by sulfur-disproportionating bacteria (SDB) can effectively remove Hg(II) and prevent MeHg production. Using various inocula, we successfully established biological sulfidogenic systems driven separately by SDB and SRB. Batch experiments revealed that SDB cultures completel

The origin of methyl group in methanogen-mediated mercury methylation: From the Wolfe cycle.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a bioaccumulating neurotoxin mainly produced by anaerobic microorganisms, with methanogen being one of the important methylators. A critical aspect for understanding the mechanism for microbial mercury (Hg) methylation is the origin of the methyl group. However, the origin of methyl group in methanogen-mediated Hg methylation remains unclear. This study aims to identify the source of methyl group for MeHg synthesis in methanogens. Our study revealed that Hg methylation in Methanospirillum hungatei JF-1 is closely related to methanogenesis process, according to the resul

Capacity, stability and energy requirement of divalent mercury uptake by non-methylating/non-demethylating bacteria.

Methylmercury (MeHg) uptake by demethylating bacteria and inorganic divalent mercury [Hg(II)] uptake by methylating bacteria have been extensively investigated because uptake is the initial step of the intracellular Hg transformation. However, MeHg and Hg(II) uptake by non-methylating/non-demethylating bacteria is overlooked, which may play an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of mercury concerning their ubiquitous presence in the environment. Here we report that Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, a model strain of non-methylating/non-demethylating bacteria, can take up and immobilize MeHg

Transcriptional Control of hgcAB by an ArsR-Like Regulator in Pseudodesulfovibrio mercurii ND132.

The hgcAB gene pair encodes mercury (Hg) methylation capability in a diverse group of microorganisms, but its evolution and transcriptional regulation remain unknown. Working from the possibility that the evolutionary function of HgcAB may not be Hg methylation, we test a possible link to arsenic resistance. Using model Hg methylator Pseudodesulfovibrio mercurii ND132, we evaluated transcriptional control of hgcAB by a putative ArsR encoded upstream and cotranscribed with hgcAB. This regulator shares homology with ArsR repressors of arsenic resistance and S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH)-responsiv

Sulfate-reduction and methanogenesis are coupled to Hg(II) and MeHg reduction in rice paddies.

Methylmercury (MeHg) produced in rice paddies is the main source of MeHg accumulation in rice, resulting in high risk of MeHg exposure to humans and wildlife. Net MeHg production is affected by Hg(II) reduction and MeHg demethylation, but it remains unclear to what extent these processes influence net MeHg production, as well as the role of the microbial guilds involved. We used isotopically labeled Hg species and specific microbial inhibitors in microcosm experiments to simultaneously investigate the rates of Hg(II) and MeHg transformations, as well as the key microbial guilds controlling the

Effect of exogenous and endogenous sulfide on the production and the export of methylmercury by sulfate-reducing bacteria.

Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant of environmental and health concern; its methylated form, methylmercury (MeHg), is a potent neurotoxin. Sulfur-containing molecules play a role in MeHg production by microorganisms. While sulfides are considered to limit Hg methylation, sulfate and cysteine were shown to favor this process. However, these two forms can be endogenously converted by microorganisms into sulfide. Here, we explore the effect of sulfide (produced by the cell or supplied exogenously) on Hg methylation. For this purpose, Pseudodesulfovibrio hydrargyri BerOc1 was cultivated in non-sul

Effect of Body Size on Methylmercury Concentrations in Shoreline Spiders: Implications for Their Use as Sentinels.

Shoreline spiders have been proposed as sentinels to monitor aquatic contaminants including methylmercury (MeHg). The present study examined the effect of spider body size on MeHg concentrations in shoreline spiders. We collected 6 taxa of spiders belonging to 4 families (orb-weavers [Araneidae], long-jawed orb weavers [Tetragnathidae: Tetragnatha sp.], jumping spiders [Salticidae], and wolf spiders [Lycosidae: Pardosa sp., Rabidosa sp., and Schizocosa sp.]) from the shorelines of 14 human-made ponds at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Grasslands in north Texas (USA). As a proxy for body size, w

Electronic and optical properties of Te-doped GaN monolayer before and after adsorption of dimethylmercury - DFT+U/TDDFT & DFT-D2 methods.

Electronic, magnetic and optical properties of Te doped g-GaN monolayer, before and after adsorbing the dimethylmercury molecule, (CH3)2Hg, were studied by DFT approach. Our calculations show that, unlike pure g-GaN monolayer, the g-GaN + Te is n-type, in which the previous gap (2.16 eV) changes to the spin gaps of 1.53 and 1.65 eV. This monolayer is a III-V ferromagnetic, that it can be used in the spin field effect transistors (FET). We showed that the adsorption of (CH3)2Hg by g-GaN + Te monolayer is possible. The g-GaN + Te+(CH3)2Hg layer is n-type, and its band gap is 2.23 eV. Both g-GaN

Metabolomic Responses of Green Alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii Exposed to Sublethal Concentrations of Inorganic and Methylmercury.

Metabolomics characterizes low-molecular-weight molecules involved in different biochemical reactions and provides an integrated assessment of the physiological state of an organism. By using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry targeted metabolomics, we examined the response of green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to sublethal concentrations of inorganic mercury (IHg) and monomethylmercury (MeHg). We quantified the changes in the levels of 93 metabolites preselected based on the disturbed metabolic pathways obtained in a previous transcriptomics study. Metabolites are downstream products o

Permafrost Thaw Increases Methylmercury Formation in Subarctic Fennoscandia.

Methylmercury (MeHg) forms in anoxic environments and can bioaccumulate and biomagnify in aquatic food webs to concentrations of concern for human and wildlife health. Mercury (Hg) pollution in the Arctic environment may worsen as these areas warm and Hg, currently locked in permafrost soils, is remobilized. One of the main concerns is the development of Hg methylation hotspots in the terrestrial environment due to thermokarst formation. The extent to which net methylation of Hg is enhanced upon thaw is, however, largely unknown. Here, we have studied the formation of Hg methylation hotspots u

Use smaller size of straw to alleviate mercury methylation and accumulation induced by straw incorporation in paddy field.

Straw sizes were found to affect the methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in rice grains induced by straw incorporation. The mechanism behind, however, still remains unclear. Here, we incorporated rice straw in different sizes (powder, 2 cm and 5 cm) into a Hg-contaminated paddy soil. Our results showed that straw sizes regulated the release of different fractions of organic matter (OM) in straw residues and further Hg methylation in paddy soil. The easily degradable OM (EDOM) was a key driving factor that facilitated net Hg methylation, though it only occupied a small fraction (1.12-3.12%) of th

Understanding mercury methylation in the changing environment: Recent advances in assessing microbial methylators and mercury bioavailability.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxin, mainly derived from microbial mercury methylation in natural aquatic environments, and poses threats to human health. Polar regions and paddy soils are potential hotspots of mercury methylation and represent environmental settings that are susceptible to natural and anthropogenic perturbations. The effects of changing environmental conditions on the methylating microorganisms and mercury speciation due to global climate change and farming practices aimed for sustainable agriculture were discussed for polar regions and paddy soils, respectively. To better u

Mercury in Municipal Sewage and Sewage Sludge.

Wide occurrence of mercury species, including the highly toxic and readily bioaccumulative methylmercury (MeHg), in municipal sewage (MS) and sewage sludge (SS) has been evidenced in recent studies. Considering that vast amounts of MS and SS are produced globally each year and the majority of MS is discharged into aqueous environments, i.e., the main sites for MeHg bioaccumulation, special attention should be paid on the source and environmental behaviors of sewage-borne and sludge-borne mercury species. This review aims to summarize the findings on the occurrence of mercury species in MS and

Reduced sulphur sources favour HgII reduction during anoxygenic photosynthesis by Heliobacteria.

The consumption of rice has become a global food safety issue because rice paddies support the production of high levels of the potent neurotoxin, methylmercury. The production of methylmercury is carried out by chemotrophic anaerobes that rely on a diversity of terminal electron acceptors, namely sulphate. Sulphur can be a limiting nutrient in rice paddies, and sulphate amendments are often used to stimulate crop production, which can increase methylmercury production. Mercury (Hg) redox cycling can affect Hg methylation by controlling the delivery of inorganic Hg substrates to methylators in

Molecular Effects, Speciation, and Competition of Inorganic and Methyl Mercury in the Aquatic Plant Elodea nuttallii.

Mercury (Hg) remains hazardous in aquatic environments because of its biomagnification in food webs. Nonetheless, Hg uptake and impact in primary producers is still poorly understood. Here, we compared the cellular toxicity of inorganic and methyl Hg (IHg and MeHg, respectively) in the aquatic plant Elodea nuttallii. IHg and MeHg regulated contigs involved in similar categories (e.g., energy metabolism, development, transport, secondary metabolism), but MeHg regulated more contigs, supporting a higher molecular impact than IHg. At the organism level, MeHg induced antioxidants, while IHg decrea
