The female urogenital microbiome: Ecological insights, therapeutic strategies, and molecular mechanisms.

Microbiome-based interventions for female urogenital health have gained attention, particularly in strategies aimed at restoring lactobacilli dominance to reduce infection and improve reproductive outcomes. These approaches include defined probiotic strains, engineered microbial consortia, and vaginal microbiota transfer. Observational studies have provided ecological insights into the composition and dynamics of the vaginal microbiome; its associations with infections, inflammation, and reproductive complications; and its interplay with urinary and mucosal niches. These data establish a corre…

A rationally designed microbial consortium modulates neurodegeneration in a Drosophila melanogaster model of Parkinson's disease.

The gut-brain axis enables communication between the central nervous system and the gut, with certain microbial metabolites influencing neur … d microbiome diversity and Lactobacillus abundance. These findings suggest that rationally designed microbial consortia targeting neurometabolite production can modulate brain physiology and confer neuroprotection, supporting their potential for microbiome-based interventions in neurodegenerative disease.

Oral microbiome contribution in colorectal carcinogenesis: polymicrobial interactions and virulence determinants.

The contribution of the microbiome to sporadic colorectal cancer (CRC) has traditionally been interpreted through the detection of individual tumor-enriched taxa or isolated virulence factors. However, accumulating evidence indicates that CRC-associated microorganisms often act as structured polymicrobial consortia rather than as independent agents. This review proposes an expanded ecological framework for understanding the role of oral taxa in colorectal carcinogenesis. Oral bacteria, including genera Fusobacterium, Parvimonas, Peptostreptococcus, Porphyromonas, Prevotella, Streptococcus, and…

Indirect resistance to several classes of antibiotics in cocultures with resistant bacteria expressing antibiotic-modifying or -degrading enzymes.

OBJECTIVES: Indirect resistance (IR), the ability of an antibiotic-resistant population of bacteria to protect a susceptible population, has been previously observed for β-lactamase-producing bacteria and associated with antimicrobial treatment failures. Here, we determined whether other resistance determinants could cause IR in the presence of five other classes of antibiotics. METHODS: A test was designed to detect IR and 14 antibiotic resistance genes were tested in the presence of 13 antibiotics from six classes. A bioassay was used to measure the ability of resistance-causing enzymes to

Deciphering of sulfonamide biodegradation mechanism in wetland sediments: from microbial community and individual populations to pathway and functional genes.

Figuring out the comprehensive metabolic mechanism of sulfonamide antibiotics (SA) is critical to improve and optimize SA removal in the bioremediation process, but relevant studies are still lacking. Here, an approach integrating metagenomic analysis, degraders' isolation, reverse transcriptional quantification and targeted metabolite determination was used to decipher microbial interactions and functional genes' characteristics in SA-degrading microbial consortia enriched from wetland sediments. The SA-degrading consortia could rapidly catalyze ipso-hydroxylation and subsequent reactions of …

A little breath of fresh air into an anaerobic system: How microaeration facilitates anaerobic digestion process.

Exposure of a small amount of oxygen/air (microaeration) has been reported to benefit the anaerobic digestion (AD) process in enhancing hydrolysis, improving methane yield, stabilizing the process and scavenging hydrogen sulfide among others. The underlying mechanism of enhancing AD process via microaeration is the augmentation of activity and diversity of the microbial consortia that promotes syntrophic interactions among different microbial groups, thereby creating a more stable process. To design and implement a microaeration-based AD process, fundamental insights about the mechanism of the…

Unveiling nitrogen and sulfur cycling mechanisms of odor reduction in kitchen waste composting driven by exogenous bacterial consortia.

Odor emissions, primarily ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) restrict the application of kitchen waste (KW) composting. Microbial inoculation is a promising strategy, yet mechanisms underlying odor mitigation remain unclear. KW composting with and without an immobilized bacterial consortium (IBC) was compared by monitoring physicochemical conditions, odor emissions, and microbial and functional profiles. IBC extended the thermophilic phase, improved composting efficiency, and reduced cumulative H2S (-44 %) and NH3 (-18 %). IBC reshaped bacterial, fungal and archaeal communities and stren

Assembly of a synthetic microbial community to ferment rice (Oryza sativa) bran for aquaculture feedstuff.

Raw materials of plant origin, such as rice bran (Oryza sativa; RB), are promising alternatives to fishmeal in aquaculture feeds, offering a low-cost solution. However, due to antinutritional factors and reduced digestibility, direct use of RB is limited. Fermentation is an effective, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly technique that improves the nutritional quality of RB, enhancing nutrient availability and digestibility and reducing harmful compounds. Fermented RB improved growth, feed utilization, immune competence, and gut health, contributing to more sustainable aquaculture prac

Experimental approach to follow the spatiotemporal wood degradation in fungal microcosms.

To investigate the spatiotemporal growth dynamics in fungal microcosms and to follow the spatial degradation effects of fungal lignocellulose fermentation, a new and flexible experimental setup was developed and tested. White and brown rot fungi were cultivated under solid-state conditions in beech wood-filled silicon tubes for 5 weeks. After inoculation of wood material at one end of the tube, the culture vessels were aerated and moistured by flushing air through alkaline and aqueous solutions. After incubation, the silicon tubes were harvested and segmented to follow different growth and deg

More is not always better: phosphorus context shapes the effectiveness of single-strain and consortium plant growth-promoting bacteria in tomato.

Phosphorus availability determines whether single or consortium PGPB maximize tomato performance, demonstrating that rational inoculant design should prioritize functional complementarity over increasing microbial complexity. Phosphorus (P) availability is a major constraint for crop development and productivity, and beneficial bacteria are increasingly proposed to enhance plant P-acquisition efficiency. However, their comparative performance remains variable across studies and experimental contexts. This study investigated whether single plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) strains and a de

Brief aerobic pretreatment for stabilizing long-term caproate production from food waste via fungi-bacteria chain-elongating consortia.

Recovery of medium-chain carboxylic acids (MCCA) from food waste is constrained by low efficiency and instability. This study validated a short-term aerobic pretreatment (AP) strategy to enhance fungi-bacteria synergy. In batch tests, AP (0.2 vvm) achieved optimal caproate titers of 22.32 ± 1.56 g COD/L. The pretreatment enriched ethanol-producing yeasts and lactate-producing bacteria, establishing a robust co-electron donor pool. Metagenomic analysis revealed that this synergy suppressed the competing tricarboxylic acid cycle, redirecting carbon flux towards reverse β-oxidation (RBO) pathway

Development of a bacterial mixed culture preventing bacterial storage diseases of root vegetables.

The storage of root vegetables is a critical aspect of agricultural production, significantly impacting both the quality and quantity of produce available for consumption. This study aimed to develop a bacterial consortium capable of preventing storage bacterial diseases in root vegetables. A total of 225 bacterial strains were isolated from various ecological niches, including crops, peri-root soils, coastal dune soils, sewage sludge, and symbiotic bacteria of common insect pests. These strains were characterized for their ability to grow at storage temperatures (4 °C) and produce cellulase,

Metabolic pathway analysis of methane from methanol as substrate in microbial consortium.

Simplified anaerobic digestion (SAD) of substrates facilitates microbial methanogenic pathways. In this study, a methane-producing microbial consortium from cow dung was enriched to determine the metabolism and metabolic pathway in the SAD of methanol. The results showed that methanol as a sole substrate produced 167 mL of methane at 10 days significantly higher than 58 mL, 17.6 mL, and 4 mL generated when methanol was combined with sodium formate, sodium formate alone, or sodium acetate. The relative abundance of Methanobacterium, Candidatus_Methanomethylophilus, Methanomassiliicoccus, and Me

New insights into the typical nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound-quinoline degradation and detoxification by microbial consortium: Integrated pathways, meta-transcriptomic analysis and toxicological evaluation.

As the primary source of COD in industrial wastewater, quinoline has aroused increasing attention because of its potential teratogenic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic effects in the environment. The activated sludge isolate quinoline-degrading microbial consortium (QDMC) efficiently metabolizes quinoline. However, the molecular underpinnings of the degradation mechanism of quinoline by QDMC have not been elucidated. High-throughput sequencing revealed that the dominant genera included Diaphorobacter, Bacteroidia, Moheibacter and Comamonas. Furthermore, a positive strong correlation was observed b

A microbial consortium led by a novel Pseudomonas species enables degradation of carbon tetrachloride under aerobic conditions.

Carbon tetrachloride (CT) is a recalcitrant and high priority pollutant known for its toxicity, environmental prevalence, and inhibitory activities. Although much is known about anaerobic CT biodegradation, microbial degradation of CT under aerobic conditions has not yet been reported. This study reports for the first time the enrichment of a stable aerobic CT-degrading bacterial consortium, from a CT-contaminated groundwater sample, capable of co-metabolically degrading 30 μM of CT within a week. A Pseudomonas strain (designated as Stari2) that is the predominant bacterium in this consortium

Novel pathway of acephate degradation by the microbial consortium ZQ01 and its potential for environmental bioremediation.

The microbial degradation of acephate in pure cultures has been thoroughly explored, but synergistic metabolism at the community level has rarely been investigated. Here, we report a novel microbial consortium, ZQ01, capable of effectively degrading acephate and its toxic product methamidophos, which can use acephate as a source of carbon, phosphorus and nitrogen. The degradation conditions with consortium ZQ01 were optimized using response surface methodology at a temperature of 34.1 °C, a pH of 8.9, and an inoculum size of 2.4 × 108 CFU·mL-1, with 89.5% of 200 mg L-1 acephate degradation obs

Effect of organic carbon and metal accumulation on the bacterial communities in sulphidogenic sediments.

A unique geochemical setting in Lake Cadagno, Switzerland, has led to the accumulation of insoluble metal sulphides in the sedimentary record as the result of past airborne pollution. This offers an exceptional opportunity to study the effect of these metals on the bacterial communities in sediments, and in particular to investigate further the link between metal contamination and an increase in the populations of endospore-forming bacteria observed previously in other metal-contaminated sediments. A decrease in organic carbon and total bacterial counts was correlated with an increase in the n

Interaction of perchlorate and trichloroethene bioreductions in mixed anaerobic culture.

This work evaluated the interaction of perchlorate and trichloroethene (TCE), two common co-contaminants in groundwater, during bioreduction in serum bottles containing synthetic mineral salts media and microbial consortia. TCE at concentrations up to 0.3mM did not significantly affect perchlorate reduction; however, perchlorate concentrations higher than 0.1mM made the reduction of TCE significantly slower. Perchlorate primarily inhibited the reduction of vinyl chloride (VC, a daughter product of TCE) to ethene. Mechanistic analysis showed that the inhibition was mainly because perchlorate re…
