Micronutrient deficiencies after bariatric surgery.

It has been estimated that approximately 220,000 people with morbid obesity underwent bariatric surgery in 2008. Modification of the gastrointestinal tract affects absorption and health care professionals counseling bariatric patients need to be aware of possible micronutrient deficiencies and their symptoms. A systematic review of several databases and bariatric surgery center websites on the Internet was conducted from January 1980 to July 2009 to identify literature related to micronutrient deficiencies occurring after bariatric surgery. Keywords used individually or in combination were bar

Micronutrient supplements for children after deworming.

The availability of a few inexpensive, single-dose drugs to treat soil-transmitted helminths and schistosomiasis offers the potential to reduce a considerable burden of acute disease, especially among children in sub-Saharan Africa. These treatments are being promoted as "rapid impact interventions". However, if helminth infections cause underweight, stunting, anaemia, and impaired mental development in children, how will removing worms alone lead to recovery without treating the underlying deficits that have been caused or made worse by helminth disease? Energy, protein, and micronutrients ar…

Micronutrient status and intervention programs in Malaysia.

Approximately 70% of the world's malnourished children live in Asia, giving that region the highest concentration of childhood malnutrition worldwide. Prevalence of stunting and underweight are high especially in south Asia where one in every two preschool children is stunted. Iron-deficiency anemia affects 40%-50% of preschool and primary schoolchildren. Nearly half of all vitamin A deficiency and xerophthalmia in the world occurs in south and southeast Asia. Iodine deficiency disorders have resulted in high goiter rates in India, Pakistan, and parts of Indonesia. Compared with other developi

Micronutrient malnutrition, infection, and immunity: an overview.

Micronutrient deficiencies and infectious diseases often coexist and exhibit complex interactions leading to the vicious cycle of malnutrition and infections among underprivileged populations of the developing countries, particularly in preschool children. Several micronutrients such as vitamin A, beta-carotene, folic acid, vitamin B12 vitamin C, riboflavin, iron, zinc, and selenium, have immunomodulating functions and thus influence the susceptibility of a host to infectious diseases and the course and outcome of such diseases. Certain of these micronutrients also possess antioxidant function…

Micronutrient interactions: effects on absorption and bioavailability.

A potential risk of interactions between micronutrients affecting absorption and bioavailability has to be considered in any supplementation or fortification strategy. At levels of essential micronutrients present in foods, most micronutrients appear to utilise specific absorptive mechanisms and not be vulnerable to interactions. In aqueous solutions and at higher intake levels competition between elements with similar chemical characteristics and uptake by non-regulated processes can take place. These interactions have clearly been demonstrated in experimental absorption studies and to some e…

Micronutrient concentrations in the HIV wasting syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: We measured micronutrient values in patients with the HIV wasting syndrome and in other HIV-seropositive patients to determine whether specific micronutrient deficiencies were associated with the wasting syndrome. METHODS: Serum from 47 HIV-seropositive patients was evaluated for concentrations of vitamin A, B6, B12, C, D, E, folate, the mineral zinc, carotene and glutathione. Comparisons were made between groups stratified by CD4 cell count and wasting/non-wasting status. RESULTS: Mean serum levels were significantly lower for vitamin A (P = 0.04), folate (P = 0.04) and carotene

Micronutrient deficiencies in ambulatory adults with cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: Despite the well-established relationship between micronutrient deficiencies and cirrhosis, little is known of micronutrient def … d selenium are common in patients with cirrhosis awaiting LT and may represent a pragmatic panel of micronutrients to send in clinical practice. Selenium deficiency, in particular, was independently associated with frailty. Future studies should assess micronutrient repletion as a possible therapy in the multipronged approach to reversing frailty in patients wit …

Unusual Micronutrient Deficiencies as Causes of Anemia.

Anemia due to micronutrient deficiencies has received little attention in public health and modern-day clinical practice. Increasing numbers … pecific clinical characteristics pinpointing a particular micronutrient. The main examples of these micronutrients contributing to a small but important burden of anemia are other B-group vitamins, pyridoxine and thiamine, ascorbic acid, the fat-soluble vitamins, A and E and other trace elements such as copper, zinc and selenium. The following review highlights …

Micronutrient Deficiencies in Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy.

The purpose of this study was to conduct a literature review to examine micronutrient deficiencies in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. We conducted a literature review using PubMed and Cochrane databases to examine micronutrient deficiencies in SG patients in order to identify trends and find consistency in recommendations. Seventeen articles were identified that met the defined criteria. Iron, vitamin B12 and vitamin D were the primary micronutrients evaluated. Results demonstrate the need for consistent iron and B12 supplementation, in addition to a multivitamin, while vitamin D supplementat…

The impact of the micronutrient iodine in health and diseases.

Adequate iodine nutrition is crucial for all mammals by playing his starring role as a component of thyroid hormones, which are key regulators of cellular processes for life such as differentiation, growth, function, and metabolism. Deficiency or excess of iodine in the diet are worldwide highly frequent conditions that are responsible of health problems like hypothyroidism, hypothyroxinemia, goiter, thyroiditis, hyperthyroidism, and autoimmune thyroid diseases among others. The incorporation of iodine in salt or other nutrients resolved the consequences of severe iodine deficiency like goiter

Micronutrient Status in Sri Lanka: A Review.

Micronutrients include vitamins, minerals and, trace elements that are required in minute quantities but play a vital role in normal human growth, development and physiological functioning. Micronutrient deficiencies, also known as hidden hunger, are a global issue, with particularly high prevalence rates in developing countries. Currently, Sri Lanka is experiencing the double burden of over- and undernutrition. This review describes the micronutrient status of Sri Lanka based on results of national surveys and related articles published from 2000. The available data suggest a higher prevalenc…

Micronutrient deficiencies in obese Thai children.

We reported the cases of 3 obese children who presented variously with costochondral beading, numbness of both hands and feet, and hypochromic-microcytic anemia. Serum ascorbic acid concentration, erythrocyte thiamin pyrophosphate effect, and serum hepcidin concentration were done to investigate these symptoms, respectively, with findings of ascorbic acid insufficiency, thiamin deficiency, and iron deficiency anemia from poor iron absorption due to a hyper-inflammatory state, respectively. This report indicated that obese children not only have energy excess but may also risk being micronutrie

Micronutrient supplementation for children with HIV infection.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiencies are widespread and compound the effects of HIV disease in children, especially in poor communities. Micronutrient supplements may be effective and safe in reducing the burden of HIV disease. This review is an update of an earlier Cochrane review of micronutrient supplementation in children and adults which found that vitamin A and zinc are beneficial and safe in children exposed to HIV and living with HIV infection (Irlam 2010). OBJECTIVES: To assess whether micronutrient supplements are effective and safe in reducing mortality and morbidity in children
