A total of 144 gastric biopsies colonized by Helicobacter-like organisms were studied under light and differential interference contrast microscopy for the modes of bacterial colonization. Biopsies were also graded for the degree of epithelial damage (epithelial-damage-grade: 0 to 6, in ascending order of severity) and density of Helicobacter-like organism (Helicobacter-grade: 0 to 6, in ascending order of bacterial density). A new morphological classification of urinary erythrocytes was instituted in order to differentiate glomerular from urological hematuria. One hundred and thirteen hematuric patients including 73 glomerular and 40 urological disease patients were examined. The former group consisted of IgA nephropathy (n = 45), lupus nephritis (6), membrano-proliferative glomerulonephritis (5), non-IgA mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis (4), Henoch-Schoenlein purpura nephritis (4), membranous nephropathy (4), endocapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis (3), and minimal change nephrotic syndrome (2).

We report the presence of crystalline deposits of calcium hydroxyapatite in the mitochondria of 2 children with sporadic spinocerebellar degeneration. The deposits, identified by electron microscopy, were found in the mitochondria of neurons and smooth muscle cells in one patient and in only smooth muscle cells in the second child, but not in other cell types.
