Invasive Necrotizing Tracheobronchial Aspergillosis in Children: A Case Series and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Invasive tracheobronchial aspergillosis is rare in children. Here, we describe 3 cases in which mucosal necrosis and erosion were observed on bronchoscopy, with pseudomembrane-like attachments on the mucosal surface. CASE REPORT Case 1: An 8-year-old girl with leukemia was admitted because of recurrent fever, persistent cough (>1 month), and 1 day of hemoptysis. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed progression of patchy opacities and consolidation in the right upper and middle lobes compared with prior imaging. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL

Altered white matter structural connectivity in primary Sjögren's syndrome: a link-based analysis.

PURPOSE: Cognitive impairment has been revealed in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). However, the underlying white matter structural connectivity (SC) changes have not been studied. This study aimed to investigate the altered white matter brain network in patients with pSS using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). METHODS: Forty-one pSS patients and sixty matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent neuropsychological tests and the subsequent MRI examinations. The clinical data were gathered from the medical record. The structural brain network was established using DTI, and a link-based comparison w

Non-neuronal cell responses differ between normal and Down syndrome developing brains.

Down syndrome (DS), the most common genetic cause of mental retardation, is characterized by reduced number of neurons and delayed myelination. Though non-neuronal cells in the brain are vital for the development, survival, and function of neurons, there is a paucity of comparative studies of normal development and DS, in particular in the temporal lobe, a region of interest for cognitive decline. We evaluated immunoreactivity for CD68 (macrophage), HLA-DR (microglia), Olig2 and TPPP/p25 (oligodendroglia), and GFAP (astroglia) in the germinal matrix (GM), temporal lobe white matter (TeWM) and

Positron emission tomographic study in Alzheimer's disease and Pick's disease.

Positron Emission Tomography has been used to compare patients with Alzheimer's disease and 3 patients with biopsy-proved Pick's disease to age-matched volunteers. In Alzheimer's disease, there was a trend to a decrease of the metabolism parallel to the severity of the affection. The hypometabolism was predominant in the temporo-parieto-occipital and the middle temporal regions. In 2 cases of Pick's disease with a classical "frontal syndrome", there was an important fronto-temporal hypometabolism, very suggestive of the diagnosis owing to both its location and intensity. A third patient presen

Bronchial carcinoid with bronchocele masquerading as Scimitar syndrome on chest radiograph.

Bronchial carcinoid tumors occur predominantly in the perihilar location and can be asymptomatic. They may present in early stages with only obstructive features such as mucus plugging of airways resulting in bronchocele formation. We report the case of a 44-year lady with no chest complaints, who underwent chest radiograph for a routine preanesthetic checkup. A vertically oriented, tubular, soft tissue density lesion was observed in the right lower lung, which mimicked a Scimitar vein. Scimitar syndrome is a congenital disorder in which an anomalous vein drains the middle and lower lobes of r

[Influenza outbreak in weaners with involvement of Mycoplasma hyorhinis and Haemophilus parasuis. A case report].

In a closed farrow-to-finish piglet producing farm 80% of 7-week-old piglets displayed respiratory disease with a 5% mortality rate. In addition to purulent bronchopneumonia in combination with interstitial pneumonia predominantly in the apical and middle lobes, fibrinous serositis was present in the thoracic and abdominal cavities. Further investigations succeeded in confirming the non-pandemic strain of porcine influenza A virus (FLUAVsw) subtype H1avN1. The molecular genetic studies on Mycoplasma (M.) hyopneumoniae and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus were negative, where

Acute chest syndrome in children with sickle cell disease. A retrospective analysis of 100 hospitalized cases.

We reviewed the clinical features of 100 cases of the sickle cell chest syndrome in 57 pediatric patients hospitalized with radiographic findings of pulmonary or pleural disease. Pulmonary infiltration was more common in the lower lobes (86%) than in the upper (25%) or middle lobes (22%). Pleural effusions were present in 38% of cases. Chest syndrome was recognized on presentation in 79% of cases, but was recognized only later in 21% of patients admitted for other indications. Patients recognized initially were more often febrile on admission (68%) than were subsequently recognized patients (3

Non-invasive assessment of cerebral microvascular changes for predicting postoperative cerebral hyperperfusion after surgical revascularisation for moyamoya disease: an arterial spin labelling MRI study.

PURPOSE: Cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (CHPS) can result after anastomotic surgery as the reperfusion is established in chronically ischemic cerebral territories in patients of moyamoya disease (MMD). In this study, we have evaluated the feasibility of arterial spin labelling (ASL) perfusion MRI to predict cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome based on changes of cerebral blood flow (CBF) after revascularisation surgery in patients of MMD. METHODS: Our prospective study included 25 patients with MMD who underwent superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) bypass with or withou

Preliminary experience in adult-to-adult living donor liver transplantation in a single center in China.

The aim of this paper is to report the authors' experience in performing adult-to-adult living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) by using a modified technique in using grafts of the right lobe of the liver. From January 2002 to September 2006, 56 adult patients underwent LDLT using right lobe grafts at the West China Hospital, Sichuan University Medical School, China. All patients underwent a modified operation designed to improve the reconstruction of the right hepatic vein (RHV) and the tributariers of the middle hepatic vein (MHV) by interposing a vessel graft, and by anastomosing the hepa

Case report: A Chinese patient with spinocerebellar ataxia finally confirmed as Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker syndrome with P102L mutation.

Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker syndrome (GSS) is a rare genetic prion disease caused by a mutation in the prion protein (PRNP) gene. It is typically characterized by progressive cerebellar ataxia and slowly progressive dementia. We present a case study of the GSS from China in which a 45-year-old male with a progressive gait and balance disorder developed cerebellar ataxia onset but was misdiagnosed as spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) for 2 years. The patient's clinical, electrophysiological, and radiological data were retrospectively analyzed. Examination revealed ataxia, dysarthria, muscle weakn

Cerebral evoked potentials in the chronic vertebrobasilar insufficiency.

The syndrome of chronic vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) consists in a complex of symptoms, often mild and transient, and lacks a complementary system of objective paraclinical investigations able to certify its existence. The study of somato-sensory, auditory and visual evoked potentials in VBI showed the occurrence of changes regardless of the symptom importance both in disorders due to extrinsic causes: a) compression by a damage of the cervical column (92.9%, 50% and 63.9%, respectively; b) diseases of the cervical spinal cord (92.9% and 46.6%, respectively) and in disorders due to some
