Joint hypermobility syndrome: A common clinical disorder associated with migraine in women.

Preliminary studies suggested that headache disorders are more common in patients with joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS). The objectives of this study were to determine if the prevalence, frequency, and disability of migraine differ between female patients with JHS and a control population. Twenty-eight patients with JHS and 232 controls participated in the case-cohort study. Participants underwent a structured verbal interview and were assigned a diagnosis of migraine based on criteria of the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd Edition. The primary outcome measures were t

Dissecting the shared genetic basis of migraine and mental disorders using novel statistical tools.

Migraine is three times more prevalent in people with bipolar disorder or depression. The relationship between schizophrenia and migraine is less certain although glutamatergic and serotonergic neurotransmission are implicated in both. A shared genetic basis to migraine and mental disorders has been suggested but previous studies have reported weak or non-significant genetic correlations and five shared risk loci. Using the largest samples to date and novel statistical tools, we aimed to determine the extent to which migraine's polygenic architecture overlaps with bipolar disorder, depression

Targeting peroxynitrite production in a model of persistent temporomandibular disorder comorbid with migraine.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The persistence of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), particularly myogenous, in a person with migraine can lead to exacerbated clinical outcomes and limited response to treatment. The pro-nociceptive reactive nitroxidative species, peroxynitrite, is involved in migraine mechanisms, but little is known of its role in this comorbidity. Here, we validate a model of persistent TMD comorbid with migraine in rats and dissect the role of peroxynitrite in its underlying nociceptive mechanisms, and as a novel therapeutic target. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: A combination of massete

Migraine and functional neurological disorder (FND)-a review of comorbidity and potential overlap.

Migraine and functional neurological disorder (FND) are two of the most common conditions in neurological practice. It is assumed that the two conditions have distinct underlying mechanisms. However, it can be clinically challenging to disentangle their relative contributions to a patient's symptoms. In addition, apart from the relationship between persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD) and migraine, the frequency of co-occurrence has not been characterized in detail. Contemporary conceptualizations of FND have driven a re-evaluation of its relationship to other neurological disorders

Role of anxiety and depression in association with migraine and myofascial pain temporomandibular disorder.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated a strong association between primary headaches (HAs) and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), specifically the myofascial pain subtype of TMD (MP TMD). The role of anxiety and depression in presentation and maintenance of MP TMD and migraine is previously demonstrated. Therefore, the objective of the current study was to evaluate the modification effect of anxiety and depression on the possible association of MP TMD and migraine. METHODS: In this retrospective case-control study, individuals between 15 and 45 years old who were diagnosed with migr

Is migraine a risk factor for the occurrence of eating disorders? Prevalence and biochemical evidences.

The eating disorders (ED), anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), are severe psychiatric and somatic conditions occurring mainly in young woman. Although the aetiology is largely unknown, same evidences suggest that biological and psychological factors play a relevant role in the pathogenesis, along with monoamine, indole and same hypothalamic hormonal dysfunctions. Migraine is characterized by similar metabolic and psychological anomalies suggesting that a possible relationship exists between the two pathological conditions. To understand the possible relationship between migraine an

Resting-state fMRI reveals brain functional alterations linked to balance disorders in vestibular migraine patients.

In subjects with Vestibular Migraine (VM), a high Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) scores is commonly observed, often reflecting severe impairment in balance. This investigation aims to evaluate the abnormalities in DHI scores and to explore the associations between alterations in brain function and balance disorders in individuals suffering from VM. Fifty-four subjects with VM and 49 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Differences in whole-brain ReHo and seed-based functional connectivity were asse

Optimizing magnetic resonance imaging for detection of greater occipital nerve pathology in migraine headache disorders.

BACKGROUND: Migraine and occipital headache disorders are increasingly recognized as conditions that may rise from compression of extracranial peripheral nerves, particularly the greater occipital nerve (GON). Despite growing recognition of peripheral mechanisms contributing to headache pathophysiology, objective imaging tools to identify extracranial nerve pathology remain limited. Magnetic resonance neurography has been utilized to evaluate peripheral and extracranial nerves; however, key technical factors that substantially influence image quality - most notably radiofrequency coil selectio
