Immigration Policy Is Sexual and Gender Minority Health Policy: How Laws Shape Risk, Fear, and Care Avoidance.

Immigration and sexual and gender minority (SGM) policies operate as interlocking systems that shape perceived risk, generate fear, and drive care avoidance among SGM immigrants in the United States. This Perspective argues that immigration policy functions as SGM health policy by structuring eligibility, surveillance, and perceived safety within health care systems. We describe how immigration enforcement, asylum restrictions, and SGM-targeted legislation produce psychological harm and suppress care-seeking, particularly among transgender immigrants and asylum seekers. Persistent data gaps ob

Gender differences in the association between discrimination, mental health, and peer support among ethnic/racial minority adolescents.

Peers play a significant role in adolescent development and mental health. However, research has found mixed findings regarding the role of peer support as a protective factor against discrimination. This study uses longitudinal survey data from Asian, Black, and Latiné adolescents’ (n = 350; Mage = 14.72, SD = 0.54, 69% female, 31% male, 0% non-binary; 41% Asian, 22% Black, and 37% Latiné) across five public high schools to investigate gender differences in longitudinal associations between discrimination and mental health, considering the moderating role of peer support. Longitudinal regress

Knowledge and smart health device use in racial-ethnic minority older adults with hypertension: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Smart health devices (SHDs) can improve hypertension management. Yet, SHD use among racial-ethnic minority older adults remains low, delaying potential benefits and exacerbating health disparities. Knowledge is a key determinant of SHD adoption; however, its influence on SHD use is not well understood. This study examines how knowledge affects SHD use among racial-ethnic minority older adults with hypertension. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted an exploratory qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with 20 racial-ethnic minority older patients aged

Examining associations between protective factors, distal minority stress, substance use, and mental health in LGBTQ+ postsecondary students.

Objective: The current study examined constructs that may buffer effects of minority stress on substance use and mental health in LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer+) postsecondary students. Participants: Online survey data from 435 LGBTQ+ college students throughout Oregon were used. Methods: Structural equation models examining distal minority stress, belonging/support, and their interaction as predictors of substance use (alcohol, cannabis, cigarette, and e-cigarette use) and past 30-day psychological distress in separate models. Results: The only identified significant inte

Brain Health Outcomes in Sexual and Gender Minority Groups: Results From the All of Us Research Program.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) groups have been historically underrepresented in neurologic research, and their brain health disparities are unknown. We aim to evaluate whether SGM persons are at higher risk of adverse brain health outcomes compared with cisgender straight (non-SGM) individuals. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in the All of Us Research Program, a US population-based study, including all participants with information on gender identity and sexual orientation. We used baseline questionnaires to identify sexual minority (lesbian, gay, b

Impact of health literacy on pregnancy outcomes in socioeconomically disadvantaged and ethnic minority populations: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy, influenced by sociodemographic characteristics such as ethnicity, economic means and societal factors, affects the ways in which pregnant women maintain their health; this in turn may increase risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To explore what is known about the impact of personal health literacy on prevention of stillbirth and related adverse outcomes in pregnant women of low socioeconomic status or from ethnic minority backgrounds. SEARCH STRATEGY: MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsychINFO, and CENTRAL were searched as well as reference lists of included studies a

Intersectional Microaggressions, Sexual Identity Concealment, and Mental Health of Young Black Sexual Minority Men and Transgender Women.

Previous research has demonstrated associations between experiences of microaggressions and negative mental and physical health outcomes, and national organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have acknowledged racism as a public health issue. Individuals with multiple marginalized identities, such as young Black men who have sex with men and transgender women, are commonly affected by discrimination and stigma, contributing to health disparities. One possible path by which microaggressions are linked to negative health outcomes for these groups is their impact on in

Mental health and substance use by sexual minority status in high school students who experienced sexual violence.

PURPOSE: To examine the association between sexual minority status and the prevalence of emotional distress and substance use among a nationally-representative sample of youth who reported sexual violence victimization. METHODS: Data were from the 2017 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a biennial school-based survey. We restricted the sample to youth who reported any past-year sexual violence victimization. We estimated prevalence ratios using modified Poisson regression with robust error variance to examine associations of sexual minority status with depressive symptomology, suicidality,

Mental health disorders among an invisible minority: depression and dementia among american Indian and alaska native elders.

According to the 2010 Census, 5.2 million people identified themselves as American Indian or Alaska Native (AIAN) in the United States. This was an increase of 39% from the prior Census, making AIANs one of the nation's fastest growing populations. The health and social programs reaching them, however, have experienced documented devastating shortfalls. Decades of inadequate resources have resulted in significant health and socioeconomic disparities. AIANs are often considered an "invisible minority." In 2012, there were 266,000 AIAN elders 65 or older who claimed one race alone. That number i

Pragmatic help seeking: How sexual and gender minority groups access mental health care in a rural state.

OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study examined how lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in rural areas of the poor and multiethnic state of New Mexico access secular (professional and lay) and sacred (indigenous and Christian) mental health care resources. METHODS: In-depth, semistructured interviews were used to document the help-seeking processes of 38 rural LGBT people. RESULTS: Obtaining assistance was complicated by the ideal of self-reliance and the view of mental illness as a sign of weakness. Financial considerations and a lack of and community-based LGBT social networks

Sexual Racism and Mental Health Among Asian American Sexual Minority Men: The Moderating Role of Internalized Racism.

Sexual racism reinforces a harmful racialized hierarchy of desirability and disproportionately affects Asian American sexual minority men (ASMM). Although researchers have demonstrated that sexual racism negatively impacts mental health, few quantitative studies have focused expressly on the experiences of ASMM using validated measures of sexual racism. The present study surveyed ASMM who use dating apps (N = 155) to explore the interrelations between sexual racism, internalized racism, and mental health. Participants, recruited online, reported on demographic information, sexual racism experi

Greater Improvements in Health-Related Quality of Life Following Cardiac Rehabilitation Among Women and Ethnic-Minority Patients.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a cornerstone of secondary prevention following cardiovascular events; however, variability in its benefits across sociodemographic groups remains incompletely understood. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate differences in changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) following CR across sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. METHODS: In this prospective study, 464 consecutive patients participating in a CR program were assessed. Using the Short-Form Survey-12 questionnaire, HRQoL was evaluated at baseline and upon program completion. Functional capa

Substance Use, Parental and Teacher Support, and Mental Health Outcomes Among Latinx Sexual and Gender Minority Youth.

Latinx sexual and gender minority youth (LSGMY) experience specific stressors due to intersectional systemic oppression that negatively impact their mental health. Additionally, many LSGMY report engaging in substance use to cope with daily stressors. Furthermore, research shows that parental and teacher support can serve as a buffer against substance use and negative mental health outcomes among these communities. However, there is little research specifically focused on LSGMY and the role that parental and teacher support play in substance use and mental health outcomes. In a sample of 1,338

Interpersonal Health Care Discrimination and Delayed Alcohol Use Treatment Among Sexual Minority Adults With Multiple Stigmatized Identities.

Experiences of prejudice and discrimination contribute to heightened risk for alcohol use-related harm among sexual minority (SM) individuals. Discrimination in health care settings can also reduce help-seeking and treatment engagement. However, most research has focused on only one form of discrimination in isolation. This study used an intersectional stigma lens to examine associations between interpersonal health care discrimination and delayed alcohol use treatment among SM adults with multiple stigmatized identities. Interpersonal health care discrimination-based on one's sexual orientati

Comparing substance use and mental health among sexual and gender minority and heterosexual cisgender youth experiencing homelessness.

Youth homelessness has been demonstrated to disproportionately affect sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth compared to heterosexual cisgender peers. In this context, we aimed to compare health risks between service-seeking SGM and heterosexual cisgender youth experiencing homelessness, including harmful risks stemming from substance use and severity of symptoms of mental health disorders. We recruited 100 racially diverse, unstably housed participants aged 18-24 who access services at an urban non-profit organization in San Francisco, CA. Data analysis included 56 SGM participants who identi
