Molecular typing of Cryptosporidium spp. circulating across multiple sources in a Latin American country.

Cryptosporidium is an intestinal protozoan causing diarrheal disease in humans and non-human animals, with severe and chronic disease primarily affecting young and immunosuppressed individuals. Among the general population, C. parvum (zoonotic) and C. hominis (anthroponotic) are the two main species involved in food- and waterborne outbreaks. In a local survey, we reported a high prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. among asymptomatic carriers and their pets (24% and 54%, respectively). To understand the transmission patterns of the infection, we molecularly characterized Cryptosporidium isolate

Clonal dissemination of drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in Thailand: insights from nationwide molecular typing.

INTRODUCTION: Drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii poses a global health crisis, especially in Asia. It has a propensity to become clonally endemic in healthcare settings. However, its clonal distribution in a broad geographic area is unclear. METHODOLOGY: The clonality of A. baumannii was characterized nationwide by collecting 572 drug-resistant A. baumannii from 18 hospitals across Thailand regions between 2017-2018 and genotyping them by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in association with carbapenemase genes data. RESULTS: The results depicted 12

Virulence genes, efflux pumps, and molecular typing of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from North Iran.

Resistant and virulent strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) are rapidly disseminated among both hospitalized patients and communities, therefore, the identification of the genes responsible for virulence and resistance, along with the clonal relatedness of these strains, could be beneficial in the management of the dissemination of these strains among patients. The aim of the present study was to assess antibiotic susceptibility, virulence and resistance genes, as well as the genetic relatedness of K. pneumoniae strains isolated from patients admitted to four hospitals in Mazandara

Molecular Typing of Clostridium botulinum Isolated from Chili Pepper Preserves During a Botulism Outbreak.

Foodborne botulism is a potentially fatal disease caused by Clostridium botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs). These spore-forming bacteria are ubiquitous in the environment and can contaminate various food products, especially raw vegetables. During the preparation of home-made preserves, favorable conditions of anaerobiosis, temperature, salinity, and pH can lead to spore germination and toxin production. BoNTs can reach neuromuscular junctions where they block the release of acetylcholine. In this study, we present a case of foodborne botulism associated with the consumption of chili peppers preser

Molecular typing of multi-drug resistant Candida albicans isolated from the Segamat community, Malaysia.

In the past decade, researchers have focused on the emergence of drug resistance in fungal pathogens such as Candida albicans, also considered as pathobionts that occur harmlessly in the human body but could potentially be triggered to cause diseases. The increasing rate of antifungal resistance in commensal gut fungi is alarming and should be further investigated. Here, we report seven novel MLST (Multi Locus Sequence Typing) genotypes of multi-drug resistant C. albicans isolates obtained from participants of a community study in Segamat, a district in the state of Johor, Malaysia. A total of

Occurrence and Molecular Typing of Giardia psittaci in Parakeets in Germany-A Case Study.

A grey-hooded parakeet (Psilopsiagon aymara) and two budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) from different owners presented with decreased activity, vomitus, and diarrhea. A microscopic examination of feces showed trophozoites of the protozoan flagellate Giardia. A commercial immunochromatographic dipstick test for Giardia sp. antigens confirmed the infection. These findings were assured by PCR of the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene and coproantigen ELISA. Sequencing of PCR products of the SSU rRNA (292 bp) and β-giardin genes (511 bp) identified Giardia psittaci as the species invo
