Domestic and family violence (DFV) disproportionately affects women and children in Australia and globally. On average, one in three women experiences DFV during adulthood and the majority of these women identify as mothers. The prevalence of DFV is higher for Indigenous women and their experiences disproportionately range at the more severe end of physical abuse. For women affected by DFV, mothering during and post this type of victimization is complicated by strategic entrapment, undermining of the mother-child relationship, and threats of harm directed at children and mothers. While a subst…

Not all mothers with histories of substance use struggle as parents, but many of them do. Research has shown that, although quality of caregiving varies widely, as a group, mothers with histories of chronic substance use are at greater risk than mothers with no substance use history for losing custody of their young children (Grant et al., 2011; Choi & Ryan, 2006; Department of Health and Human Services, 1999). In observational studies, mothers with substance use disorders have demonstrated lower levels of sensitivity and responsiveness to their young children's emotional cues and marked oscil…

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the risk of xerophthalmia among nonpregnant women and their children and the risk factors for households in which both mother and child have xerophthalmia.
METHODS: In case-control analyses of more than 15 000 households in the National Micronutrient Survey of Cambodia, univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) for nonpregnant mothers, children, and mother-child pairs with xerophthalmia.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Risk factors for xerophthalmia.
RESULTS: Of 10 942 children aged 18 to 60 months and 9587 nonpregnant women, t…

BACKGROUND: Tanzania has among the highest rates of stillbirth and neonatal death globally, yet little is known about the mental health impact of such loss on mothers. Cultural stigma, silence around grief, and limited access to psychosocial support compound these challenges. This study explores the experiences of bereaved Tanzanian mothers, focusing on mental health symptoms, social support, and preferred forms of post-loss care.
METHODS: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) in Moshi, Tanzania. Fifty women (25 with stillbirth, 25 with ne…

BACKGROUND: Increasing incarceration of women disrupts fertility, family formation, parenting and mother-child relationships. It is common in many jurisdictions, including Canada, to mitigate the harm of separation from the primary parent through programs allowing children to co-reside with their mothers in prison. In this scoping review, we asked the following questions: (1) What are the characteristics of residential mother-child programs in carceral facilities? (2) Who is eligible to participate? (3) How do these programs make a difference to maternal and child health outcomes?
METHOD: We …

OBJECTIVES: Caffeine is a habit-forming substance consumed daily by the majority of pregnant women. Accordingly, it is important that women receive sound evidence-based advice about potential caffeine-related harm. This narrative review examines evidence of association between maternal caffeine consumption and negative pregnancy outcomes, and assesses whether current health advice concerning maternal caffeine consumption is soundly based.
METHODS: Database searches using terms linking caffeine and caffeinated beverages to pregnancy outcomes identified 1261 English language peer-reviewed artic

BACKGROUND: Previous cross-diagnosis studies of interaction between mothers with severe mental illness and their babies have concluded that mothers with schizophrenia have deficits in interaction, but these studies have not included healthy controls.
METHOD: In-patients on a mother and baby unit, with diagnoses of schizophrenia (n=15), depressive mood disorders with or without psychosis (n=23), or mood disorders where mania was the predominant feature, with or without psychosis (n=12), were observed interacting with their infants on admission and discharge. Charting the dynamic character of mother-infant interaction requires using observational systems of sequential coding in real time. A longitudinal study was designed to approach maternal sensitivity in a more complex way using sequential analysis. The study was conducted with 20 high- and 20 low-risk mothers and their infants (aged: 3, 12 and 15 months) to examine the relation among mothers' risk status for physical abuse and their maternal interactive profiles, using micro-social sequential analyses, and the subsequent quality of attachment developed by their children at 15 months of age. Dyadic emotional availability and infant-mother attachment relationship were examined in 687 Israeli dyads. Concurrent assessments used the Strange Situation procedure (Ainsworth, Blehar, Waters, & Wall, 1978) for evaluating infants' attachment relationship, and the Emotional Availability Scales (Biringen, Robinson, & Emde, 1993) for evaluating the quality of mother-child interaction. It was found that higher scores on the Emotional Availability Scales were associated with infant attachment security. In addition, it was found that the Emotional Availability Scales discriminated between insecur

How a mother's working model of caregiving develops through an infant's first post-term year has implications for the infant's health. Change in the adaptiveness of the working model of caregiving through the first year and influencing conditions (mother and infant) were examined for 33 premature infants and 44 full-term infants. Adaptiveness was coded from the transcription of a video-assisted interview at 1, 4, 8 and 12 months postterm age. Mother conditions included years of education, symptoms of depression, and evaluation of caregiving. Infant conditions included status at birth, birth we

National breastfeeding statistics are conventionally read as a measure of maternal behaviour, and the dominant policy response has been to educate and encourage individual women. This Perspective argues that breastfeeding statistics should be interpreted primarily as indicators of system performance rather than maternal behaviour. In high-income countries, much early cessation occurs among women who intended to continue breastfeeding but could not obtain timely, effective support. The resulting shortfall therefore reflects constrained choice as much as personal preference. That both the system

BACKGROUND: Hepatosteatosis, which we frequently observe today with change in lifestyle, is often unnoticed, but preventable and reversible; if not prevented, it can lead to serious comorbidities. There is contradicting evidence in the literature; we believe that breastfeeding has a protective effect on hepatosteatosis. In this cross-sectional study we conducted, we aimed to examine the relationship between breastfeeding duration, metabolic parameters and fatty liver.
METHODS: We examined the data of 135 patients aged 20-40 years who have had at least one pregnancy and were admitted to our po

OBJECTIVE: While there is ample evidence supporting delayed cord clamping (DCC) in neonates, the data on the maternal outcomes related to DCC are relatively sparse. Moreover, the outcomes, such as postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), were mostly reported for uncomplicated term vaginal deliveries. The objective of this study was to present the two primary maternal outcomes, incidence of PPH and change in hematocrit pre- and post-delivery in complex situations of preterm deliveries and term cesarean sections.
STUDY DESIGN: Maternal data were collected prospectively since the placental transfusion proce

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal obsessive-compulsive disorder (POCD) is characterised by the presence of intrusive thoughts resulting in significant distress and urges to execute repeated behaviours occurring in the perinatal period. POCD is largely understudied and existing literature has mostly studied POCD quantitatively.
OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study explores the experiences of 10 mothers randomly selected from a larger sample (N = 251; 86.8% White) who met high risk criteria based on the Postnatal Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (POCS≥16). These mothers were interviewed about their experiences wi…

PURPOSE: Although many young mothers (aged <21 years) are exposed to multiple adversities that increase their risk for mental illness, prevalence data are largely limited self-report questionnaires estimating only the prevalence of postpartum depression. Gaining a greater understanding of the burden of a broader range of common mental illnesses affecting these young women has the potential to improve their health as well as the development and functioning of their children.
METHODS: The Young Mothers Health Study recruited 450 mothers aged <21 years and 100 comparison mothers (aged >20 years …

BACKGROUND: Newborn hearing screening programs identifies newborns with hearing loss. The early identification enables prompt intervention through hearing rehabilitation. Accurate knowledge of the program and its benefit will impact on the uptake of the program by the citizenry. We hypothesized that there is a gap in the knowledge of parents on hearing screening and rehabilitation measures in Nigeria.
AIM: To determine the knowledge and perceptions of mothers of newborn children on hearing screening.
METHODS: A cross sectional observational study among mothers of newborn children at immuniza…

This study examined the factors that influence Latina mothers' decisions to initiate breastfeeding, formula feeding, or both, and when a given neonatal feeding method is decided, in order to assess the optimum time for healthcare providers to discuss nutrition decisions. A Spanish-speaking health care provider orally administered a 24-question survey to self-identified Latina mothers in the Newborn Nursery at North Carolina Children's Hospital after delivery. A total of 152 Latina mothers, aged 17 to 43 years, were interviewed from September 2014 to September 2015. Three decisive factors resul…
