Spatial and temporal organization of ensemble representations for different odor classes in the moth antennal lobe.

In the insect antennal lobe, odor discrimination depends on the ability of the brain to read neural activity patterns across arrays of uniquely identifiable olfactory glomeruli. Less is understood about the complex temporal dynamics and interglomerular interactions that underlie these spatial patterns. Using neural-ensemble recording, we show that the evoked firing patterns within and between groups of glomeruli are odor dependent and organized in both space and time. Simultaneous recordings from up to 15 units per ensemble were obtained from four zones of glomerular neuropil in response to fo

Thermal stability and enzymatic activity of a smaller lysozyme from silk moth (Bombyx mori).

Bombyx mori lysozyme is 10 amino acids shorter than hen egg-white lysozyme, which is a typical c-type lysozyme. It was expressed by using the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris. The thermal stability and the enzymatic activity of the Bombyx mori lysozyme were estimated and compared with those of human and hen egg-white lysozymes. The denaturation temperature was 17-26 degrees C lower than those of human and hen egg-white lysozymes. Further, the enthalpy change and the heat capacity change for unfolding were smaller than those of human lysozyme. It was also confirmed that the stability agains

Silk moth chorion pseudogenes: hallmarks of genomic evolution by sequence duplication and gene conversion.

The part of the genetic locus of the domesticated silk moth, Bombyx mori, in which high cysteine (Hc) chorion genes of late developmental specificity reside contains regions encompassing gene-like sequences which exhibit properties distinct from those of functional Hc genes. One of these regions has been characterized and shown to contain a chorion pseudogene, psi HcB.15, which shares pronounced similarities with a transcribed chorion pseudogene, psi HcB.12/13, which was characterized previously. Both pseudogenes are homologous to HcB chorion genes but bear multiple single nucleotide substitut

Evolution of sexual dimorphism and polychromatism in a lineage of tiger moths (Lepidoptera: Erebidae): advancing knowledge of a taxonomically chaotic group.

Pericopina is divided into 36 genera, with the greatest diversity recorded in the Neotropics. Studies on the taxonomy and systematics of pericopines are scarce, and one of the few phylogenetic hypotheses available in the literature places some Afro-Indo-Malayan lineages among the Neotropical representatives. Through a survey of adult morphological characters, we analyzed the phylogenetic relationships in Pericopina including Nyctemera and other Afro-Indo-Malayan genera as putative members of this subtribe. Additionally, we tested the monophyly of Dysschema, a key genus to understanding the evo

Genome sequence determination and analysis of a betabaculovirus from the moth Glena bisulca, a defoliating pest of pines.

A baculovirus isolated from the moth Glena bisulca was characterized by electron microscopy of its occlusion bodies (OBs) and sequencing of its genome. The OBs of this virus, Glena bisulca granulovirus isolate 1002 (GlbiGV-1002), were ovocylindrical with a single virion, as described for other betabaculoviruses. The 104,702 bp circular genome contained six direct repeat (dr) regions and 121 open reading frames. A core gene phylogeny placed GlbiGV-1002 in betabaculovirus clade b with Cnaphalocrocis medinalis granulovirus (CnmeGV) as the nearest relative. Kimura-2-parameter nucleotide distance e

Processionary Moth Exposure in Europe: Toxic-Irritant and Immunoglobulin E-Mediated Endotypes, Diagnosis and Management.

Processionary moths (Thaumetopoea spp.), particularly the oak processionary moth (Thaumetopoea processionea), are an increasingly relevant cause of allergic and toxic disease in Europe, occurring in the context of reported range expansion, changing environmental conditions and persistent contamination with airborne urticating hairs (setae). Clinical manifestations range from toxic-irritant dermatitis and ocular injury to respiratory symptoms, while a subset of exposed individuals develops genuine IgE-mediated disease, including rhinoconjunctivitis, asthma, and rare cases of anaphylaxis. These …

Varietal preference of codling moth for damage and dependence of population build-up on important weather parameters.

The codling moth, Cydia pomonella L., is a major oligophagous pest causing serious losses in apple and other rosaceous fruit crops. Although varietal differences in susceptibility to codling moth infestation have been reported, substantial damage may occur under inadequate management practices. The recent establishment of this pest in the apple-growing regions of Jammu and Kashmir, India, has highlighted the need for a better understanding of varietal preference and the influence of weather parameters on pest population dynamics. The present study was conducted during 2021 and 2022 in the kare

Neuromuscular Anatomy and Motor Patterns at the Base of Calling Behaviour in the Female Spongy Moth Lymantria dispar.

"Calling behaviour" is a stereotyped rhythmic motor pattern displayed by female moths, by which they emit the sex pheromone to attract of conspecific males. Calling occurs through a squeezing mechanism based on the turtleneck-like folding and unfolding of the ovipositor cuticle during its telescopic extensions and retractions. This mechanism is under the control of the terminal abdominal ganglion (TAG). By combining anatomical and electrophysiological approaches, here we studied the morpho-functional organisation of the abdominal muscles and the activity of motoneurons from TAG nerve N4-N6 as …

A nearly complete database on the records and ecology of the rarest boreal tiger moth from 1840s to 2020.

Global environmental changes may cause dramatic insect declines but over century-long time series of certain species' records are rarely available for scientific research. The Menetries' Tiger Moth (Arctia menetriesii) appears to be the most enigmatic example among boreal insects. Although it occurs throughout the entire Eurasian taiga biome, it is so rare that less than 100 specimens were recorded since its original description in 1846. Here, we present the database, which contains nearly all available information on the species' records collected from 1840s to 2020. The data on A. menetriesi

Establishing an invertebrate Galleria mellonella greater wax moth larval model of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococcus) causes the human sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea. Studying gonococcal pathogenesis and developing new vaccines and therapies to combat the increasing prevalence of multi-antibiotic resistant bacteria has made use of many ex vivo models based on human cells and tissues, and in vivo vertebrate models, for example, rodent, pig and human. The focus of the current study was to examine the utility of the invertebrate greater wax moth Galleria mellonella as an in vivo model of gonococcal infection. We observed that a threshold of ~106 - 107 gonococci/larva wa

What's the buzz? Ultrasonic and sonic warning signals in caterpillars of the great peacock moth (Saturnia pyri).

Caterpillars have many natural enemies and, therefore, have evolved a diversity of antipredator strategies. Most research focuses on those strategies (crypsis, countershading, and warning coloration) targeting visually guided predators. In contrast, defensive sounds, although documented for more than a century, have been poorly studied. We report on a novel form of sound production--chirping--in caterpillars of the common European Great Peacock moth (Saturnia pyri). Chirps are broadband, with dominant peaks ranging between the sonic (3.7 kHz) and ultrasonic (55.1 kHz) and are generated by a ra

Severe tongue necrosis associated with pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea wilkinsoni) ingestion in three dogs.

The pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea wilkinsoni) is an insect of medical significance in the eastern Mediterranean. This report describes three exposure cases in dogs due to ingestion of this moth's caterpillars in Israel. All three dogs were observed in direct contact with caterpillars or pinecones in infested gardens. The disease course and progression of signs were acute in all three cases, and included vomiting and severe tongue swelling. Physical examination findings included hyperthermia, tachypnoea, respiratory distress, cyanosis and tongue oedema, labial angioedema, ptyalism, bila

[Microsporidiosis in the wax moth Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) caused by Vairimorpha ephestiae (Microsporidia: Burenellidae)].

An experimental microsporidiosis of the wax moth caterpillars from laboratory population had been caused by oral infecting of early stages larvae and by intracavity injections of the spores of the microsporidian species Vairimorpha ephestiae. Peculiarities of microsporidiosis proceeding, manifestations of host defence reactions, and also an effect of the temperature of caterpillars cultivation and conditions of spores keeping on liability of the insects to the infection were studied. The effect of the microsporidia on the host organism was the early death or the delay of larvae development, bu

Bicuculline-insensitive GABA-gated Cl- channels in the larval nervous system of the moth Manduca sexta.

GABA-gated Cl(-) channels were studied in the nervous system of the larval tobacco hawk moth, Manduca sexta, using electrophysiology, (36)Cl(-) uptake into membrane microsacs and immunocytochemistry. A GABA-induced increase in Cl(-) conductance was recorded from a visually identifiable neurone ( fg1) in the desheathed frontal ganglion. The response was insensitive to the vertebrate GABA(A) receptor antagonist, bicuculline, but was blocked by picrotoxinin. Bicuculline-insensitive, picrotoxinin-sensitive, GABA-stimulated (36)Cl(-) uptake was also detected in membrane microsacs prepared from the
