Amputations following motorcycle accidents. A 1-year experience.

Of 110 patients who had recently undergone an amputation and were seen at the Amputee Service at the Johannesburg Hospital during January 1982- February 1983, 40 had required post-traumatic amputations following motorcycle accidents. The majority of these patients had sustained such severe bone and soft-tissue damage that it had been necessary to perform amputation on the day of admission. The high morbidity following motorcycle injuries is cause for concern and recommendations to reduce the rate of injury are offered.

Changes in motorcycle-related head injury deaths, hospitalizations, and hospital charges following repeal of Pennsylvania's mandatory motorcycle helmet law.

To evaluate the 2003 repeal of Pennsylvania's motorcycle helmet law, we assessed changes in helmet use and compared motorcycle-related head injuries with non-head injuries from 2001-2002 to 2004-2005. Helmet use among riders in crashes decreased from 82% to 58%. Head injury deaths increased 66%; nonhead injury deaths increased 25%. Motorcycle-related head injury hospitalizations increased 78% compared with 28% for nonhead injury hospitalizations. Helmet law repeals jeopardize motorcycle riders. Until repeals are reversed, states need voluntary strategies to increase helmet use.

Development of emission factors and emission inventories for motorcycles and light duty vehicles in the urban region in Vietnam.

This paper reports on a 2-year emissions monitoring program launched by the Centre for Environmental Monitoring of the Vietnam Environment Administration which aimed at determining emission factors and emission inventories for two typical types of vehicle in Hanoi, Vietnam. The program involves four major activities. A database for motorcycles and light duty vehicles (LDV) in Hanoi was first compiled through a questionnaire survey. Then, two typical driving cycles were developed for the first time for motorcycles and LDVs in Hanoi. Based on this database and the developed driving cycles for Ha…

Advanced driving assistance integration in electric motorcycles: road surface classification with a focus on gravel detection using deep learning.

Riding a motorcycle involves risks that can be minimized through advanced sensing and response systems to assist the rider. The use of camera-collected images to monitor road conditions can aid in the development of tools designed to enhance rider safety and prevent accidents. This paper proposes a method for developing deep learning models designed to operate efficiently on embedded systems like the Raspberry Pi, facilitating real-time decisions that consider the road condition. Our research tests and compares several state-of-the-art convolutional neural network architectures, including Effi

Louisiana motorcycle fatalities in the wake of governmentally implemented change: a retrospective analysis of the motorcycle morbidity and mortality before, during, and after the repeal of a statewide helmet mandate.

BACKGROUND: On August 15, 2004, Louisiana's universal motorcycle helmet mandate was reinstated. Previous studies have shown that mortality and morbidity of motorcycle riders who crashed had increased during the 5 years the mandate was repealed. The objective of this study was to discern whether the reinstatement of the universal helmet mandate has resulted in a subsequent decrease in motorcycle-related mortality and morbidity in the state of Louisiana. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed observing the regularity of helmet use and the associated morbidity and mortality of motorcycl

The human cost of allowing unhelmeted motorcycling in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: This study's objective was to estimate the number of motorcyclist fatalities attributable to laws that allow unhelmeted riding in the United States since 1976. METHOD: Counts of helmeted and unhelmeted motorcyclist fatalities were used to estimate population-level helmet use under all-rider helmet laws and in the absence of such laws. The number of lives that could have been saved if helmet use in states that allowed unhelmeted riding was equal to helmet use in states with all-rider helmet laws was estimated for each year and summed over the study years. RESULTS: If all states

Analysis of jaw fractures in motorcycle accidents: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The mandible and maxilla are the most robust facial bones, protecting the facial skull. Fractures of these bones rank among the most common facial injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents due to the exposed location of the face. Such injuries can have serious health consequences, from functional impairment to death. METHODS: The review adhered to the PRISMA Guidelines. Conducted across four electronic databases: Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar. Keywords were selected based on a search strategy structured around the Population, Intervention, Comparison, and

High-power motorcycle accidents in Spain: a descriptive study.

PURPOSE: In modern societies, motorcycle accidents have become a great problem for health systems worldwide. In Spain, the size and the power of the engine of 2-wheel vehicles determine the type of driving license and the age at which these vehicles can be used (mopeds and motorcycles, which at the same time can have a small or large engine capacity). The objective of the present study was to analyze and characterize low- and high-power motorcycle accidents in Spain, between 2014 and 2020, both included and compared these categories with each other. METHODS: Retrospective, descriptive, and ob…

[Spatial analysis of motorcycle-related mortalities in Brazilian municipalities].

Analysis of the distribution of motorcycle-related mortality rates in Brazilian municipalities is fundamental to understand and seek to minimize the occurrence of this growing phenomenon. The main objective of this work is to analyze the spatial distribution of motorcycle rider mortality rates in Brazil, based on more robust and reliable estimates. An attempt was also made to identify the presence of spatial clusters in the distribution of such mortality rates in given municipalities. The rates were estimated based on the average number of motorcyclist deaths recorded in the years 2014, 2015 a

Long-lasting virtual motorcycle-riding trainer effectiveness.

This work aimed to test the long-lasting effects of learning acquired with a virtual motorcycle-riding trainer as a tool to improve hazard perception. During the simulation, the rider can interact with other road actors and experience the most common potential accident situations in order to learn to modify his or her behavior to anticipate hazards and avoid crashes. We compared performance to the riding simulator of the two groups of participants: the experimental group, which was trained with the same simulator one year prior, and the control group that had not received any type of training

The role of experience and advanced training on performance in a motorcycle simulator.

Motorcyclists are over-represented in collision statistics. While many collisions may be the direct fault of another road user, a considerable number of fatalities and injuries are due to the actions of the rider. While increased riding experience may improve skills, advanced training courses may be required to evoke the safest riding behaviours. The current research assessed the impact of experience and advanced training on rider behaviour using a motorcycle simulator. Novice riders, experienced riders and riders with advanced training traversed a virtual world through varying speed limits an

Influence of type of helmet on facial trauma in motorcycle accidents.

The mandatory use of helmets by motorcyclists has lowered the incidence of facial trauma, but we know little about the effects of different models of helmet on such injuries. We aimed to find out how different types of helmet affect facial injuries. We collected retrospective data from the medical records of 157 patients treated in a trauma centre in metropolitan São Paulo between January and December 2011. Patients wearing open-face helmets were twice as likely to require an operation as those wearing full-face helmets. The type of helmet is strongly associated with the treatment required.

How similar are two-unit bicycle and motorcycle crashes?

This paper explores the similarities and differences between bicycle and motorcycle crashes with other motor vehicles. If similar treatments can be effective for both bicycle and motorcycle crashes, then greater benefits in terms of crash costs saved may be possible for the same investment in treatments. To reduce the biases associated with under-reporting of these crashes to police, property damage and minor injury crashes were excluded. The most common crash type for both bicycles (31.1%) and motorcycles (24.5%) was intersection from adjacent approaches. Drivers of other vehicles were coded …

On-road and wind-tunnel measurement of motorcycle helmet noise.

The noise source mechanisms involved in motorcycling include various aerodynamic sources and engine noise. The problem of noise source identification requires extensive data acquisition of a type and level that have not previously been applied. Data acquisition on track and on road are problematic due to rider safety constraints and the portability of appropriate instrumentation. One way to address this problem is the use of data from wind tunnel tests. The validity of these measurements for noise source identification must first be demonstrated. In order to achieve this extensive wind tunnel

Towards identifying the roll motion parameters of a motorcycle simulator.

This study aimed at identifying the roll motion parameters of a motorcycle simulator prototype. Experienced motorcyclists tuned the angular physical movement of the mock-up and that of the visual scene to achieve an optimal riding experience during curves. The participants exceeded the rolling angles that would be required in real-world riding, while avoiding leaning the mock-up beyond 10°. In addition, they were more influenced by the speed of the virtual motorcycle than by road curvature, especially in a wide field of view. Heterogeneity was found in the roll applied to the visual scene. The
