We review epidemiological and clinical data on human myiasis from Ecuador, based on data from the Ministry of Public Health (MPH) and a review of the available literature for clinical cases. The larvae of four flies, Dermatobia hominis, Cochliomyia hominivorax, Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis, and Lucilia eximia, were identified as the causative agents in 39 reported clinical cases. The obligate D. hominis, causing furuncular lesions, caused 17 (43.5%) cases distributed along the tropical Pacific coast and the Amazon regions. The facultative C. hominivorax was identified in 15 (38%) clinical cases,…

Myiasis occurs in humans and vertebrate animals mostly due to dipterous flies of the genera Chrysomyia and Cochliomyia. There have been reported cases of myiasis of skin, breast, intestine, eyes and ear but very few cases of vulvar myiasis have been reported in the medical literature. We report a case of a 20 years old female with vulvar myiasis. A 20-year old unmarried girl presented to our hospital with complains of vaginal discharge and vulvar irritation for 3 days with evidence of some worms around her vulvar region. Her menstrual history revealed the use of folded cloths instead of sanita…

Myiasis is known as the infestation of living organisms with maggots. It is often caused by (self-) neglect. Eight cases of myiasis have been examined at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Hamburg between 2002 and 2014. It is important that the medical examiner compares the maggots' stage of development with the alleged time of death. Especially in cases of home care, myiasis and neglect are suspicious and deserve special attention.

Myiasis is a tropical infection most often caused by Dermatotobia hominis, also known as the botfly. It is rarely seen in the United States. The infection has a slow evolution and often presents with painful lesions that mimic furunculosis, boils, and infected cysts. The mechanism of infection is based on the deposition of botfly eggs onto an arthropod, which acts as a vector of transmission. The arthropod infects various hosts and botfly eggs are concomitantly deposited on the host. The Dermatobia eggs transform into their larval form and penetrate the skin through adjacent adnexal structures…

There are very few reports of myiasis in neonates and umbilical myiasis is the rarest form. The umbilical stump of a 7-day-old neonate in the postnatal ward was found to be infested with maggots secondary to hatching of housefly eggs.

Aural myiasis is a rare clinical state that usually occurs in developing countries and in patients who mentally retarded or have poor personal hygiene. However, the prevalence has decreased over the years, and now it is very rare. The authors describe a case of aural myiasis caused by Wohlfartia magnifica in a five-month-old infant. The treatment used was a combination of suctioning and microsurgical forceps under an operative microscope. Additionally, topical and oral antibiotics were given to avoid secondary infection.

Genital myiasis was diagnosed in a cat which was brought to the clinic for therapy six days after giving birth. Ten dead larvae were collected from its genital organs. During the microscopic examination, the larvae were identified as the third stage larva of Lucilia sericata.

We report a case of myiasis of a rectocutaneous fistula in a subject suffering from bone metastases after surgical resection of a neoplastic bladder. The fistula was infested by maggots identified as third-instar larvae of flies belonging to the family Sarcophagidae, genus Sarcophaga. The infestation was neither intestinal nor pseudointestinal; it was probably caused by a fly ovipositing on the fistula of the patient while having wound care at home, even though the possibility that the infestation might have occurred during hospitalization cannot be ruled out.

Myiasis is a rare infestation of any part of the body by larvae of Diptera. Cutaneous myiasis, the most common form seen in tropical climates of Central America, South America and Africa, are extremely rare in the United States. An extraordinary case of cutaneous myiasis was seen in Hot Springs in a 71-year-old healthy white male upon his return from the rain forest of Costa Rica. Manual extraction of one of the larvae by the patient and surgical excision of three other separate subcutaneous larvae were diagnostic and therapeutic in this case.

Six cases of intestinal myiasis were diagnosed in Macao from January 1987 to August 1989, during a survey of intestinal parasites in inhabitants and on stool routine examination in hospitalized patients. The species of flies identified were Stomoxys calcitrans in 4 cases and Megalesia (Megalesia) insulana in 2 cases, M. insulana being a new record in mainland of China. During the survey of intestinal parasites 1889 human fecal samples were collected from Chinese inhabitants. 45 samples were collected on September 2 and 15 samples on September 11, 1987 in an aged home. Among them 4 samples were…

The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of functional dependence and its associated factors among community-dwelling older adults in the rural area of the municipality of Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, population-based study. A systematic random sampling of households was used. Eighty percent of households in the rural area were selected, which included 1131 older adults
