Between the Tale and the Dream: Sándor Ferenczi-Trauma and Dreams.

The analysis of the story "The Curse" by Canetti (1977; it could have been a dream) allowed us to address concepts such as early trauma in Ferenczi, trauma in Freud, the body as a register of deep pain that houses perhaps even deeper psychic pain. Trauma occupies a principal place. It is a real trauma that cannot be linked; it is split off. In this sense, Ferenczi proposes thinking about the constitution of the infantile ego as an extension of the adult ego, thus this ego can operate as a structuring or de-structuring of the early trauma. The narration of this story allows us to think about th…

From Feeling to Form and Back: A Process-Differentiation Framework for Integrating Embodied, Symbolic, and Narrative Meaning.

Experiences can organize attention and action before they are readily explained, while articulation and later interpretation may alter what is noticed or felt. Psychology offers sophisticated but partly incompatible accounts of bodily affect, implicit experiencing, symbolization, and narrative meaning. This article develops a process-differentiation framework that compares four analytically distinct, potentially overlapping domains: embodied-affective orientation, implicit situational integration, symbolic articulation, and interpretive reconfiguration. Narrative configuration is treated as a

Effective Communication through Narrative.

Communication is foundational to clinical and leadership excellence. In patient care, listening, empathy, and trust prevent errors. In complex health systems, leaders who move beyond data transmission, toward creating a cohesive narrative, help teams unite around purpose. Drawing on cognitive science and organizational theory, this article positions storytelling as a core leadership tool that connects metrics to lived experience, mobilizes action, and humanizes policy.

Injury rates tell an incomplete story, but a more complete measurement narrative may be possible.

INTRODUCTION: Despite years of research challenging their validity, injury rate metrics continue to significantly influence decision-making in many organizations. In this paper, we argue that both the source of this problem and a solution rest in understanding the narrative power of these metrics. We explore this idea by developing and applying a set of alternative injury measurement tools specifically designed to provide more comprehensive and compelling narratives of injury performance. Comparing alternative measures with traditional stand-alone injury rates demonstrates how the overall narr

Facilitating Visualizations of Future Emotions: Leveraging the Narrative Immersion Model to Explore the Potential of Narratives to Reduce Affective Forecasting Errors.

BackgroundAffective forecasting errors (i.e., errors in people's predictions about future emotions) are common in health decision making and can negatively affect health outcomes. Although narrative interventions have been used to mitigate these errors, many studies did not clearly identify the specific errors targeted or examine the impact of different narrative types on affective forecasting. We applied the narrative immersion model (NIM) to capture the nuances of narratives on mitigating specific affective forecasting errors in health decision making.MethodsUsing a narrative review of exist

Scientific parallels of sleep physiology in the Qur'anic narrative of the Companions of the Cave "the Cave Sleepers".

BACKGROUND: The Qur'anic narrative of the Companions of the Cave (Cave Sleepers, in Arabic "Ashab al-Kahf") describes young believers who experienced a prolonged, divinely induced sleep in a cave, as recounted in verses 18:9-26 of Sūrah Al-Kahf. This account, while spiritual in nature, presents details that parallel modern scientific concepts in sleep physiology, particularly regarding environmental influences and bodily preservation during extended immobility. OBJECTIVE: To explore scientific parallels between the Qur'anic description of the Cave Sleepers' prolonged sleep and contemporary sl

Verbosity with retelling: Narrative discourse production in temporal lobe epilepsy.

To examine micro- and macrolinguistic underpinnings of circumstantiality in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), we examined the elicited narrative output of 15 individuals with TLE and 14 controls. To replicate and extend Field and colleagues' (2000) work, participants were asked to produce five immediately consecutive elicitations of an eight-frame cartoon "Cowboy Story" (Joanette et al., 1986). Following transcription and coding, detailed multi-level discourse analysis demonstrated a typical pattern of compression in controls. The narratives produced by individuals with TLE were less fluent, cohes

[Validation of an instructional therapeutic tool to demonstrate cardiac catheterization].

The scope of this work was to validate a toy and a narrative as an instructional tool to present to children who are to be submitted to cardiac catheterization. Content validation was performed by 23 specialist judges (storytellers, child educators, nurses, medics, educational psychologists, occupational therapists, and a psychologist), by using a form considering the following topics: goals, structure and presentation, as well as relevance. Quantitative data was analyzed through the Content Validation Index (CVI) and a cutoff of 0.80 was adopted. Qualitative data was then submitted to themati

Neoliberal Misfits: Reconceptualizing Debility in the Critical Medical Humanities.

In recent years, the concept of debility has gained a lot of attention. In critical theory and in the critical medical humanities, the concept has come to refer specifically to the general ill-health of ordinary lives under neoliberal capitalism; as such, it has triggered a surge of interest in large-scale affective assemblages that incapacitate multitudes of bodies. This article proposes neoliberal misfit as a conceptual tool to remedy the dissolution of subjectivity in these discussions. Pushing back against Jasbir Puar specifically, it argues that processes of debilitation produce a particu

In their own words: A narrative analysis of illness memoirs written by men with prostate cancer.

By drawing on a narrative analysis of 11 autobiographical illness memoirs, this article investigates the complexities of what it means to live with prostate cancer over a period of time. Acknowledging how cancer disrupts everyday life, we focus on the day-to-day experiences and struggles that take place inside and outside the hospital. By building on illustrative quotes from the memoirs, we discuss different facets of cancer as a lived experience. Our findings show that men reconstruct their identity in the memoirs in response to the disruptive nature of cancer by including various identities

Construct validation of narrative coherence: Exploring links with personality functioning and psychopathology.

Narrative coherence serves as an index of the unity in an individual's sense of self-integrating their past self with their present self and allowing them to pursue meaningful goals for their future. It has been assessed using the Life Story Interview. Personality functioning is used to describe an individual's ability to develop stable and integrated representations of the self and others as well as their ability to develop and maintain stable, intimate, and affiliative relationships and meaningfully empathize with others. We studied the links between narrative coherence (based on Life Story

Stories from Haiti: a comparison of three approaches.

Two stories from Haiti are considered from three different perspectives. The first story is about a boy named Joseph Alvyns, whose mother died from cholera in 2011. His story is told in a short film titled Baseball in the time of Cholera. The second story is about Mme. Yolande Marie Nazaire, who was the Director of the Haiti National School of Nursing in Port-au-Prince on the morning of January 12, 2010, when an earthquake killed 90 students and faculty. The three perspectives discussed here are: (a) Critical Reflective in health professional education as used by the University of California a

Dying as a 'normal', 'ordinary' or 'natural' process in palliative care: a systematic scoping review and narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization definition of palliative care describes dying as a 'normal' process and it, along with related ideas of 'ordinary' or 'natural' dying, is important in understanding what a 'good' death is. This scoping review aims to explore how dying has been described as 'normal', 'ordinary' or 'natural' in empirical palliative care literature to provide palliative care stakeholders with evidence-based insights into how this concept may enable quality dying experiences and a 'good' death. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted by searching six online databases (Med

Suffering and the collapse of language: between the sayable and the impossible.

This article explores the relationship between human suffering and the limits of language, positing that suffering is not simply an experience of physical pain or emotional distress but a fracture in the capacity to articulate meaning. It clearly distinguishes between pain (a localised sensory experience that is potentially communicable) and suffering (an existential experience that involves a rupture of the symbolic order). It is argued that suffering appears when personal narrative is interrupted or becomes incoherent, provoking what is termed a 'collapse of language'-moments when experience

Moving beyond a figurative psychedelic literacy: Metaphors of psychiatric symptoms in ayahuasca narratives.

Metaphors, analogies, and similes commonly appear in narratives of drinking the potent psychedelic "ayahuasca", presenting an intriguing transcultural pattern. Based upon survey and field research at an ayahuasca healing center in Pucallpa, Peru, the article investigates conceptual metaphors in narratives of ayahuasca experiences made by the visiting international guests. Bodily metaphors and visionary analogies frequently appear in narrative plots where they can express the reappraisal, overcoming, and sometimes emboldening of symptoms diagnosed by psychiatry. Moving beyond the literal-figura

Surprise Reveals the Affective-Moral Economies in Cancer Illness Narratives.

Emotions, like joy and sorrow, feature in illness narratives, dramatizing stories of becoming: sick, well, controlled, in control. However, brief emotions, such as surprise, have received limited analytic attention in cancer illness narratives. Drawing on 20 interviews with 11 participants with diverse cancer diagnoses, along with the 455 photographs they produced for this study, we address the complex interactions between discourse, societal expectations, and perceptions in moral-affective economies. Tracing the emergence, deployment, and silencing of surprise provided an avenue to explore co

Digital Storytelling With Heroin Users in Vancouver.

As the opioid crisis escalates across North America, photographers are highlighting the gravity of the situation. However, many of their images of people who use drugs are problematic and stigmatizing. This study looks at how digital storytelling (DST) was used in order to assist long-term heroin users taking part in North America's first heroin-assisted treatment program in Vancouver, BC, in amplifying and sharing their personal experiences. DST is a participatory and collaborative process designed to help people share narrative accounts of life events. A total of 10 participants took part in

Narrative reconstruction therapy for prolonged grief disorder: Basic interventions and mechanisms of change.

Narrative reconstruction is a time-limited integrative therapy, originally developed in the context of post-traumatic stress disorder and adjusted for the treatment of prolonged grief disorder (PGD). It consists of exposure to the loss memory and narrating a detailed written reconstruction of it. In this paper, we describe narrative reconstruction interventions and modifications for the treatment of PGD as well as the underlying mechanisms of change including integration of the loss episode into the life narrative. A case demonstration of narrative reconstruction with a patient with PGD presen

Bilateral Renal Replacement Lipomatosis: A Case Report on Rare Complication of Obstructive Uropathy.

Renal replacement lipomatosis (RRL) is an uncommon complication, leading to the fatty replacement of the renal parenchyma. Various etiologies have been described for this long-term infirmity, but obstructive uropathy is one paramount cause. Previously described reports have documented unilateral disease in the majority, but we are narrating a case of bilateral RRL, which is very scarce in the literature. A 57-year-old man, who was a known case of obstructive uropathy, presented to us with the symptoms of urinary tract infection. In imaging evaluation, the patient was found to have bilateral RR
