[Narrow band imaging: description of the technique and initial experience with upper urinary tract carcinomas].

PURPOSE: Endoscopic treatment of upper urinary tract carcinomas (UUTC) is becoming more and more prevalent compared to non-conservative surgery. Our goal was to determine if NBI technology could improve tumour detection. MATERIAL: Twenty-seven patients with known or suspected UUTC were prospectively enrolled and treated using the Olympus URF-V flexible ureteroscope. We report 13 new cases (48%) and 14 known cases as follow up (52%). White light and NBI were subsequently performed to examine the upper urinary tract. Visual aspect of the lesions could be compared using both types of light. Biop

Standardized Magnifying Endoscopy with Narrow-Band Imaging-Guided Targeted Biopsy Workflow For Upper Gastrointestinal Precancerous Lesions.

Although early detection of upper gastrointestinal precancerous lesions is vital, subtle mucosal variations often limit conventional endoscopic screening. To address this limitation, we present a standardized targeted biopsy protocol using magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (ME-NBI). This systematic workflow integrates key microstructural and microvascular criteria-specifically demarcation lines, irregular microsurfaces, atypical microvasculature, and marked glandular distortion-to identify high-risk focal areas for mucosal sampling. In a prospective clinical evaluation involving 16

Image-Guided Excision of Oral Leukoplakia Using Narrow-Band Imaging Illumination and Two-Stage Local Anesthesia.

This study evaluated the use of narrow-band imaging (NBI) to assist in achieving adequate excision of oral leukoplakia with complete removal of lesions. Use of lidocaine combined with a vasoconstrictor for local anesthesia is standard practice in surgery. However, the blanching effect that follows injection can obscure the boundary between oral leukoplakia and the surrounding normal mucosa. A two-stage local anesthesia protocol was applied: plain lidocaine was first administered for anesthesia, after which the excision margin was defined under NBI illumination using a carbon dioxide laser, fol

A randomized trial of narrow band imaging for performing airway mucosal biopsy in pulmonary sarcoidosis (NABS).

BACKGROUND: Data suggest that narrow band imaging (NBI) highlights airway mucosal nodules better than white light bronchoscopy (WLB) in sarcoidosis. No randomized trial has compared the diagnostic yield of endobronchial biopsy (EBB) performed using NBI versus WLB. METHODS: We performed an investigator-initiated single-center, parallel-arm, randomized trial. Consecutive subjects ≥18 years of age with clinico-radiologic presentation consistent with sarcoidosis were randomised 1:1 to undergo EBB using NBI plus WLB (intervention) or WLB (control). OUTCOMES: The primary outcome was the diagnostic…

Narrow band imaging complements eosinophilic esophagitis reference score in predicting inflammatory infiltration in patients with dysphagia.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (ME-NBI) is regularly used in neoplasia diagnostics although its use in assessment of esophageal inflammatory changes is uncommon. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of eosinophilic esophagitis reference score and ME-NBI signs in predicting inflammation using gastroscopy with dual focus in patients with dysphagia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study in adults undergoing gastroscopy with esophageal biopsies because of dysphagia/food bolus impaction. Number of eosinophiles and lymp

Accuracy of Narrow-Band Imaging-Guided Histopathology and Ki-67 Index in Head and Neck Carcinoma.

UNLABELLED: As per Globocan 2012, every year the incidence of head and neck cancer is 683235/1000000 with a mortality of around 375665/1000000 thus being the sixth cause of cancer death throughout the world. Head and neck cancer includes cancer of the nasopharynx, oropharynx, hypopharynx, larynx, and oral cavity. Early diagnosis of head and neck cancer is very challenging, hence detecting mucosal lesions at an early stage decreases mortality thereby improving overall survival, disease-free survival, and quality of life. Out of different diagnostic modalities, narrow-band imaging (NBI) combined

Usefulness of magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging for diagnosing primary vascular ectasia in a dog.

Intranasal inflammatory polyps are commonly reported in cats but are rarely described in dogs. A pug dog was presented with chronic upper airway obstruction consistent with brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). Computed tomographic examination of the skull revealed intranasal soft-tissue masses causing marked airflow obstruction. Surgical correction of BOAS was completed, including removal of the intranasal obstructive tissue. Histopathologic examination confirmed inflammatory polyps. Clinical signs improved markedly following surgery. This case highlights intranasal inflammatory

Prospective diagnostic study on the use of narrow-band imaging on suspicious lesions during colonoscopy examination.

INTRODUCTION: Colonoscopy is the gold standard to detect colorectal neoplasm. Narrow-band imaging (NBI) has a good diagnostic accuracy to differentiate between neoplastic and non-neoplastic colorectal lesions. This study explores the diagnostic validity of NBI colonoscopy as well as its associated factors related to neoplastic and non-neoplastic colorectal lesions. METHODS: This study enrolled 100 patients in a single-center tertiary teaching hospital. Patients presented for screening colonoscopy, and those with suspicious colorectal lesions were included in this study. During colonoscopy, th

Diagnostic videocholangioscopy using narrow-band imaging and recanalization by rendezvous technique for difficult benign biliary stricture.

A 51-year-old man was hospitalized because of close examination for liver dysfunction. drip infusion cholangiography-computed tomography (DIC-CT) revealed a stricture located at the middle bile duct but normal biliary scintigraphy. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) showed obstruction of bile duct. Although we tried to pass the stricture using several kinds of guidewire under direct vision of peroral cholangioscopy, recanalization could not be achieved. Then percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) was conducted. Cholangioscopy using narrow band imaging showed no tu…

New approach to diagnosing ampullary tumors by magnifying endoscopy combined with a narrow-band imaging system.

BACKGROUND: A newly developed narrow-band imaging (NBI) system, which uses modified optical filters, can yield clear images of microvessels and surface structure in gastric and colonic diseases. In the present study, we investigated the ability of magnifying endoscopy with NBI (MENBI) to diagnose and differentiate between benign and malignant ampullary tumors. METHODS: Fourteen patients, whose ampullas were noted to be significantly enlarged or protruding with conventional endoscopy, were enrolled in the study. Specimens, which were obtained by forceps biopsy, endoscopic papillectomy, and/or
