Actinomycosis is considered to be a rare disease in the oral region. A retrospective study of files of the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry, Department of Pathology, revealed 30 cases in which Actinomyces species were detected from the years 1982 to 2001 (28,490 specimens). Biopsy submission forms and patient records were reviewed in each of these cases with particular attention to clinical impression, subsequent treatment, and case outcome. Culture and sensitivity data were collected on over 500 isolates from indwelling urinary catheters in 23 Nebraska long-term care facilities. Four percent of all nursing home patients had indwelling urinary catheters. The prevalence of bacteriuria in catheterized patients was 79%., and the most frequent isolates were E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Enterococcus species. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess treatment and mortality differences between women diagnosed with breast cancer through Nebraska's Every Woman Matters (EWM) program and women diagnosed through other sources.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed using 10 years of Nebraska Cancer Registry and EWM program data on women aged 40-74 years. This study used chi-square and multivariate logistic regression with mortality as the outcome of interest.

West Nile virus (WNV) is an RNA flavivirus transmitted through a mosquito vector. In 2018 Nebraska reported 242 cases, the highest incidence of WNV since 2003. This included 119 neuroinvasive cases (49%) and 11 deaths (4.5%) (DHHS 2018). Clinical presentation ranges from uncomplicated symptoms including fever, headache, and myalgias to neuroinvasive disease characterized by meningoencephalitis, flaccid paralysis, and other neurologic manifestations. A 7.5-year-old raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) from the Henry Doorly Zoo (Omaha, Nebraska) presented to the veterinary hospital for lethargy and weight loss. On physical examination, splenomegaly and hepatomegaly were noted on palpation and were confirmed by radiographic evaluation. Radiography also demonstrated a mass in the cranial mediastinum. As of June 29, eight states had reported a total of 57 human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) illness to CDC through ArboNET in 2004. A total of 38 cases had been reported from Arizona, 10 from California, three from New Mexico, two from Florida, and one each from Michigan, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Thirty-six (64%) of the cases occurred in males; the median age of patients was 53 years (range: 9-84 years), and dates of illness onset ranged from April 23 to June 15. Of the 57 cases, one fatal case was reported from Arizona.

Prevalence of the skin lesion acanthosis nigricans was determined in two tribal communities in Texas and Nebraska. Thirty-eight percent of the Alabama-Coushatta tribe of Texas had acanthosis nigricans. Nineteen percent of Omaha and Winnebago tribal children had the skin lesion; the youngest children had the least acanthosis nigricans. Among weight-matched Alabama-Coushatta, fasting insulin concentrations were twofold higher in subjects with the lesion. In 1980, a case of plague acquired in New Mexico and hospitalized in Nebraska illustrated the problem of plague occurring in persons traveling from the state in which they become infected to another state. Antibodies to Ascaris suum have been detected and quantitated in sera of swine orally inoculated with eggs of A suum, using an indirect solid-phase microradioimmunoassay. Antibody titer of 1:640 to 1:10,240 were quantitated, using purified and crude ascarid antigens in the assays. Swine sera from 71 of 72 farm herds located in 37 counties in Nebraska had at least 1 serum of the 7 tested with a titer equal to or greater than 1:20. A total of 437 sera were positive and 67 negative (ie, less than 1:20 titer). Six positive sera selected at random had titers of 1:640 to 1:5,120.
