INTRODUCTION: Strangulation of the intestine as the result of compression of its blood supply in a tightly closed gastroschisis defect is a very rare occurrence.
CLINICAL CASES: We present the cases of two newborn patients who had extra-abdominal infarcted bowel and intra-abdominal jejunal atresia due to vascular compression for gastroschisis defect. One was associated with colonic, probably acquired aganglionosis. Both had similar clinical courses.
CONCLUSIONS: This association is very uncommon. Prognosis of this complex is very poor.

The authors describe a female patient with large parathyroid gland adenoma presenting with clinical symptoms of primary hyperparathyroidism and severe hypercalcaemia. Before planned surgical treatment the patient spontaneously developed clinical symptoms of tetany. Hypocalcaemia was confirmed by laboratory test. We report an unusually short lived and asymptomatic episode of severe cisplatin-induced renal tubular salt wasting in a fit 41-year-old patient with malignant teratoma. This was associated with polyuria but no significant hyponatraemia. Full recovery occurred because of early pick up, emphasizing the need for careful fluid balance monitoring of patients receiving cisplatin chemotherapy.

A case of late stage cutaneous leishmaniasis with focal caseous necrosis is reported. The patient, a 30 year old Tunisian man, presented with idiopathic bone marrow aplasia. Microscopically, minimal changes were observed in the epidermis: slight hyperkeratosis and moderate acanthosis. Lesions predominated in the dermis. Reconstruction of the natural course of lunate necrosis is difficult because of incomplete findings, especially in the initial stages. The necrosis progresses steadily from initial lunate oedema with a normal X-ray appearance to condensation, fragmentation and collapse of the lunate within months. The antisynthetases syndrome associates lung disease, polymyositis, Raynaud's phenomenon and frequently polyarthritis. Anti-amioacyl-tRNA synthetase antibodies are present. The most common is anti-Jol. We report a case with severe arteritis of the finger with multiple zones of skin necrosis which responded favourably to corticosteroids given in bolus and cyclophosphamid. Finger arteritis, in addition to classical Raynaud's phenomenon, may be a new manifestation of the anti-synthetases syndrome.

Clinicopathological features were examined in 65 neonates and 8 stillborn infants with pontosubicular necrosis (PSN) compared to 57 neonates and 19 stillborn infants without PSN. Twelve out of 65 neonates with PSN had congenital heart disease and 3 out of 65 neonates showed persistent fetal circulation. Between 1968 and 1988, 679 patients were hospitalized for ingestion of caustic substances, and 87 had severe caustic burns of the entire esophagus, together with panparietal necrosis. Twenty-one of them had tracheobronchial necrosis with perforation. Fifteen have not been operated on; six have had operations, with success in four. We describe an original technique for repairing these tracheobronchial perforations with a pulmonary patch.

Aetiopathogenesis of the necrosis of the talus has not yet been definitely clarified, and neither has that of the other aseptic necroses. We were able to study the aetiopathogenesis, course of the disease and therapy in 20 of our own patients by follow-up; two of these developed necrosis of the talus in both feet.
