[Accessory splenic infarction presenting as a hemorrhagic tumor in the pancreas].

We present a case of intrapancreatic accessory splenic infarction in a 28-year-old woman. It was discovered during a workup for an acute right epigastric pain. Computed tomography imaging of abdomen demonstrated a hemorrhagic high attenuation with enhancing solid portion in the tail of pancreas. The clinical and radiological differential diagnosis included pancreatic mucinous cystic neoplasm, pancreatic endocrine neoplasm, solid pseudopapillary tumor, ductal adenocarcinoma, and metastasis. A distal pancreatectomy was completed. The microscopic examination revealed heterotopic splenic tissue wi

Bowel perforation secondary to metastatic lung cancer: Report of two cases with literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Gastrointestinal metastases from pulmonary neoplasm represent a rare but potentially fatal pathology that can complicate the disease in most advanced stages; this is a rare but well-known phenomenon in Literature and small intestine is the most common metastatic site. Generally these are patients with a known or surgically treated pulmonary neoplasm; the onset of pulmonary neoplastic disease with a symptomatic intestinal metastasis is to be considered extremely rare. PRESENTATION OF CASES: We report two cases of small intestine perforation from pulmonary metastasis; diagnosis wa

Orbital rhabdomyosarcoma with skin metastasis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma is a soft tissue neoplasm that usually arises in the head and neck region and genitourinary tract. Skin metastasis of rhabdomyosarcoma is extremely rare; of thirteen cases reported in the literature, most were children younger than 10 years and only three cases have been reported in adults. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old Moroccan man was admitted with a right orbital tumor. The tumor was excised and histopathology examination confirmed a diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma. The patient was treated with chemotherapy, but local recurrence occurred one year later. The pa

Primary pancreatic neoplasia or metastasis from colon carcinoma?

INTRODUCTION: The pancreas is an unusual but occasionally favored target for metastasis from other primary cancers. Metastases have been described for various non-hematologic neoplasms, such as renal-cell carcinoma, pulmonary small-cell carcinoma, melanoma and gastric carcinoma. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 77-year old man with a mass in the pancreatic head five years after anterior resection for adenocarcinoma of the colon and three years after resection of a lung metastasis. The patient underwent pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (Longmire-Traverso) and lymph-node dissectio

Metastatic inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor identified by EUS-FNA in mediastinal lymph nodes with ancillary FISH studies for ALK rearrangement.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is an exquisitely rare neoplasm with a low incidence of metastasis. Previously, cytologic diagnosis of this entity, by fine needle aspiration (FNA) or endoscopic ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA), was challenging, if not impossible. However, advancements in the field of molecular pathology, the applications of which have lagged in cytopathology relative to other disciplines, now makes diagnosis possible. Here we report a case of pulmonary inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor with mediastinal nodal metastasis in a 74-year-old man, definiti

Cardiac metastasis due to pulmonary metastasis from a transitional cell carcinoma.

We report a rare case of symptomatic cardiac metastasis from a transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis diagnosed by echocardiography. A 75-year-old patient with a long history of neoplasm since 1999 and coronary artery disease with CABG in 2003, was admitted to our department. He underwent cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass with tumor excision. Histologically it was the same type of transitional cell neoplasm which was operated seven years before. We present all medical history, detailed 2D and 3D echocardiography, intraoperative pictures and discuss possible chain of changes

Melanoma metastatic to central neurocytoma: a novel case of tumor-to-tumor metastasis.

We report a case of a 43-year-old man with known metastatic melanoma and two intracranial tumors, one of which was resected and confirmed to be melanoma. At autopsy, the second lesion was found to be a central neurocytoma harboring metastatic melanoma. To our knowledge, this represents the first reported case of tumor-to-tumor metastasis to a central neurocytoma. The most common pattern of tumor-to-tumor metastasis for intracranial neoplasms, in which an aggressive high-grade malignancy serves as the source tumor and a more indolent neoplasm serves as the recipient tumor, is affirmed by the pr

Metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma to the thyroid gland: A clinico-pathological and immunohistochemical study of 8 cases and review of the literature.

When a patient with a previous history of neoplasm presents with a thyroid lesion, the possibility of it being metastatic should always be considered. In this series, we present the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features of the thyroid metastases diagnosed in our department over the past 30 years. Here we present eight thyroidal metastases from clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCCC), including a tumor to tumor metastasis, the patients being 2 men and 6 women with a median age of 62 years. The majority had a past history of goiter and a single and palpable metastasis. In one pat

Solitary metastasis of lung carcinoma to the internal auditory canal.

We report a case of solitary metastasis of lung carcinoma into the internal auditory canal. On admission, the 60-year-old patient was complaining about a rapidly developing hearing loss with ipsilateral facial nerve paralysis. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intracanalicular tumor, which was interpreted as vestibular schwannoma. After tumor resection, the histopathologic examination revealed a metastasis of a squamous cell carcinoma. Computed tomographic scan and bronchoscopy identified an asymptomatic primary pulmonary neoplasm.

[Metastasis of pulmonary origin in a metatarsal head: differential diagnosis of an attack of gout. Literature review of bony metastases of hands and feet].

The osseous metastasis in our patient's first toe has been the initial clinical manifestation of a pulmonary neoplasm and the clinical picture was that of a gout-attack or an other osteoarticular affection. As a rule, primary supradiaphragmatic neoplasia tend to metastasize to the hands whereas primary infradiaphragmatic neoplasia tends to metastasize to the feet. Our patient, who presented a pulmonary tumor with a metastasis in the right foot, did not fit into this schedule.

Pathology of intracranial neoplasms.

This article discusses the gross and microscopic pathology of intracranial neoplasms. Primary intracranial neoplasms include tumors of the brain parenchyma; meninges; and rest of mesenchymal, epithelial, and germ cell derivation. The concept of tumor malignancy for primary central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms is somewhat different from that for systemic tumors. Although the capacity to metastasize is a defining feature of systemic malignancies and metastasis to the brain is a relatively common occurrence, primary CNS neoplasms rarely metastasize outside the CNS.

Indications and outcome of surgery for small nonfunctioning pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (≤2 cm).

OBJECTIVE: Optimal treatment strategies for small (≤2 cm) nonfunctioning pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms are still subject to discussion. The aim of this study was to analyze real-world data of patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms ≤2 cm regarding the indications for surgery and long-term postresection survival. METHODS: All patients undergoing surgery for nonfunctioning pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms ≤2 cm between 2003 and 2023 were analyzed. Indications for surgery, clinicopathologic parameters, and long-term survival were assessed. Differences between pancreatic neuroe

Papillary carcinoma thyroid with metastasis to ectopic cervical thymus.

Papillary carcinoma of thyroid is the most common type of thyroid neoplasm which is usually confined to the thyroid and tends to metastasize to regional lymph nodes. Distant metastasis occur in up to 15% of cases. Thymic metastasis from any malignant carcinoma is extremely rare with only four cases reported in medical literature. We report a case of papillary carcinoma of thyroid metastasizing to ectopic cervical thymus which has not been previously reported.

Penile hybrid verrucous-squamous carcinoma associated with a superficial inguinal lymph node metastasis.

A 62-year-old Japanese man who presented with penile carcinoma is reported. The initial exophytic neoplasm excised from the coronal sulcus and prepuce on the abdominal side of the penis was diagnosed histologically as verrucous carcinoma. Twenty-six months after the primary operation, an epithelial neoplasm recurred within the scar of the primary operation. The neoplasm histologically showed verrucous carcinoma and multiple invasive foci of conventional squamous cell carcinoma in the advancing edge of the tumor, as such representing a hybrid verrucous-squamous carcinoma. A lymph node metastasi

Malignant retroperitoneal PEComa: A case report with emphasis on radiological findings.

A perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm with distinctive perivascular epithelioid cells that usually demonstrates myomelanocytic differentiation. PEComas can arise in various organs and generally are benign. Uncommonly PEComas have been documented to be malignant with metastasis most frequently to the lung, liver, lymph nodes, and bone. Here, we present the case of a 59-year-old male with a malignant retroperitoneal PEComa with confirmed metastasis to the femur and suspected metastasis to the liver and lung. The purpose of this case study is to present the

[A case of metastatic cutaneous nodules of recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma].

Common metastatic sites of hepatocellular carcinoma include lung, peritoneum, adrenal gland and bone, but rarely, skin can be metastatic sites. Although hepatocellular carcinoma is the third commonest malignancy in Korea, cutaneous metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma was rarely reported. Cutaneous metastasis from malignant neoplasm of the internal organ occur at the variable stage and the growth pattern of cutaneous lesions is nonspecific and various, so the differential diagnosis of skin lesions must be considered to other malignant condition. We report a case of cutaneous metastasis fro

Chiasmal syndrome due to metastasis.

We examined three patients with a chiasmal syndrome due to metastasis and were able to find only two additional cases in the literature. The characteristic presentation consisted of progressive impairment of vision without headache or abnormal plain skull x-ray films in patients with weight loss or diabetes insipidus. In three of the five patients, the primary malignant neoplasm was occult when symptoms and signs of chiasmal dysfunction were seen. Four patients responded well to irradiation. The chiasm may be compromised by suprasellar extension of pituitary metastasis, by infiltration from an

A case of malignant granular cell tumor in the sigmoid colon.

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is an uncommon, usually benign neoplasm; however, a malignant potential has been described. Malignant GCT is an extremely rare neoplasm showing rapid growth and invasion into adjacent muscles, lymph nodes, or vessels, or even distant metastasis. We recently experienced a case of a histologically benign or atypical but clinically malignant GCT, with invasion of the lymph nodes and vessels in the sigmoid colon, diagnosed by segmental colon resection with lymph node dissection. We also performed a review of relevant medical literature.

ADAM 10 expression in primary uveal melanoma as prognostic factor for risk of metastasis.

Uveal melanoma is the most frequent primary intraocular neoplasm in adults. Although malignant melanoma may be located at any point in the uveal tract, the choroid and ciliary body are more frequent locations than the iris. In the present study, we examined ADAM10 expression levels in primary uveal melanoma both with and without metastasis, and we evaluated their association with other high risk characteristics for metastasis in order to assess if ADAM10 can be used to predict metastasis. This study included a total of 52 patients, 23 men and 29 women, with uveal melanoma. A significantly high
