Werner's syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that affects connective tissue throughout the body. The genetic basis is not yet known, although many laboratory abnormalities have been reported. The manifestations are widespread, and many organs may prematurely undergo changes usually associated with aging. The disease generally becomes apparent around puberty, with growth arrest and thinning and graying of hair. Rapidly progressing bilateral cataracts typically occur when patients are in their 20s and 30s. A dermatologist may be consulted because of the scleroderma-like appearance of

A 23-year-old man is reported who had a connective tissue disorder with features of rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Because of the development of severe myocarditis and acute cerebral dysfunction treatment with azathioprine and prednisone was instituted, with dramatic clinical improvement. Ten months later, when a total of some 52 g of azathioprine had been administered, acute myelomonocytic leukemia developed. Although acute myelogenous leukemia has been noted in several individuals receiving immunosuppressive drugs for treatment of lymphoreticular neoplasms, this compl

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a group of rare malignant tumors arising from mesenchymal stem cells. There are more than 60 different types of neoplasms that fall under the umbrella of STS, including tumors that originate from cartilage, adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, or connective tissue, among many other tissue types. One particular type of high-grade aggressive STS is the undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS), formerly known as the malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH). There has historically been much debate about the classification and differentiation of UPS from other types of sarc

A mouse monoclonal antibody raised against acute myeloid leukaemia cells (YB5.B8 monoclonal antibody; Gadd, S. J. and Ashman, L. K. (1985): Leukaemia Res. 9, 1329-1336) has been found by an indirect immunoperoxidase technique to bind to scattered cells in frozen sections from a number of human tissues. They have been identified as mast cells in fixed sections of skin, tonsil and duodenum by simultaneous staining of glycosaminoglycan with Alcian blue in 0.7 N HCl. The antibody does not distinguish mast cells in mucosal tissues from those in connective tissue, although the level of expression by

In hyperplastic conditions of the skin, eosinophilic bodies are often observed in the epidermis and upper dermis. These have been named variously Civatte body of lichen planus and dyskeratotic cell of actinic keratosis. In the present studies, it was found that (i) these cells commonly contain whorls of distinct filaments (60-80 A), which may be attached to desmosomes; (ii) unlike keratinized cells, the cellular envelope was not thickened by the formation of the marginal band; (iii) the cytoplasm contains a large number of vacuoles; (iv) the nucleus is lost by condensation or diffuse disintegr

In order to assess the possible human carcinogenicity of formaldehyde we conducted a retrospective cohort mortality study of workers exposed for at least three months to formaldehyde in three garment facilities which produced permanent press garments. A total of 11,030 workers contributing 188,025 person-years were included in the study. Vital status was successfully ascertained through 1982 for over 96% of the cohort. The average (TWA) formaldehyde exposure at the three plants monitored in 1981 and 1984 by NIOSH was 0.15 ppm but past exposures may have been substantially higher. In general, m

INTRODUCTION: Surgical excisions of upper and lower extremity malignancies are increasing annually, due in part to the rising incidence of sarcomas. The purpose of this study is to compare readmissions, reoperation rate, and complications following surgical excision of soft/connective tissue vs bone malignancies of the upper and lower extremities.
METHODS: The Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD) was queried from 2016-2017 to conduct a retrospective analysis of 16,435 patients diagnosed with malignant neoplasms of the long bone (ULLB, n = 1,433) and soft tissue (ULST, n = 2,049) of the uppe

BACKGROUND: Lipoma is a benign neoplasm originated from adipose cells circumscribed by connective tissue. This neoplasm represents about 1% to 4.4% of all oral benign tumors and it is rarely located in the palate area.
OBJECTIVE: This case reports the occurrence of an oral lipoma in the hard palate of a 57-year-old woman and discusses its etiology and treatment.
CASE REPORT: The treatment consisted in the total resection of the lesion and laser therapy. The patient is being followed up for forty three months with no signs of recurrence.
CONCLUSION: Lipoma in hard palate is a rare entity tha

The extrapleural space (EPS) is an anatomic space at the periphery of the chest that can be involved in a number of disease processes. This space lies between the inner surface of the ribs and the parietal pleura and contains adipose tissue, loose connective tissue, lymph nodes, vessels, endothoracic fascia, and the innermost intercostal muscle. It is often overlooked on cross-sectional imaging studies and almost invariably overlooked on conventional radiographic studies. At conventional radiography, the EPS occasionally can be seen when there is extrapleural fat proliferation, which might be

The introduction of immunomodulators as adjuvant therapies in cancer treatment has represented a significant advancement in oncology, improving therapeutic response and patient survival. Emerging targets and molecules could provide new therapeutic opportunities for cancer patients. However, these agents can induce immunological side effects, including vasculitis and connective tissue diseases, which, while uncommon, present significant clinical challenges. This review analyzes the prevalence, clinical characteristics, therapeutic strategies, and management difficulties of vasculitis and connec

Tumor-induced osteomalacia is a rare and often misdiagnosed condition that presents with progressively worsening unexplained chronic pain and proximal muscle weakness. The osteomalacia leads to multiple stress fractures which do not heal properly, leading to progressive disability. It is caused by chronic hypophosphatemia due to inappropriate urinary phosphate wasting. This is due to a typically benign mesenchymal tumor that over-secretes a phospaturic hormone. Neurologists need to appreciate the relevance of chronic hypophosphatemia in people with chronic unexplained pain, as timely diagnosis
